Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Seemed like a pretty good budget place to stay after I missed my flight last month. Its spread out and fairly easy to socialize in the common areas. The staff were friendly enough, booking easy. They lose 1 star because I was told that i needed to have an actual 65 litre backpack to stay there in the big dorms. Thats a first for me, i had my duffel bag and dive bag with me. So i had to pay extra and stay in a 4 bed dorm with 3 other Australians. I kinda get the feeling they dont really want to deal with Australian travellers, perhaps they have had bad experiences in the past. Perhaps they should put the requirements on the agoda site Anyways it is what it is. I would recommend it, as its got a good vibe to the place

I would not recommend staying at Big Bird Backpacker - other than the location it is pretty awful. The rooms are small, beds are uncomfortable, there are cockroaches in the rooms and bathroom, the bathrooms are dirty, and the staff barely clean. The staff were helpful with directions and friendly in general. You can defiantly find cheaper places for better!!

Great place for campervans looking to stay in the city, and they offer powered sites which is great! Absolutely lovely staff, not the best facilities but it’s cheap so expected. Would definitely stay again

I was trying to think of an adjective to describe this hostel and the only one I could think of was that "This hostel is a dive." Filthy, inconvenient, unsafe, a laughing stock. Every night there was some sort of sick or random s*** on the floor in the communal areas that just made you feel dirty as you walked past it in the morning. The room I stayed in had 2 sockets in the wall, one at either end of the room for 10 people to share. My room sometimes didnt lock, meaning anyone could walk in. With it being a 10 bedroom and such a high turnover of people you wouldnt know if someone came in that wasnt meant to be there. The hostel has paid for wifi so although it may be very slightly cheaper once you've paid for the wifi per day it is a similar price to other hostels. I thought my food had been stolen because it was not in the fridge. I have been told since leaving this morning that you have to RENT fridge space which is a joke. You would find that if you went onto the front for a cigarette youd get middle aged men asking if you had any weed? (It happened to me twice in 4 days) The only good think about the place was Matt behind reception. He went above and beyond and was really helpful. He helped me find a job and was always prepared to help me. I didnt get told by the staff when I checked in about renting fridge space so technically theyve just thrown away good food for no reason. I got told wrong information about other minor things such as where the 'job club' was meaning I turned up late. I have moved to a hostel about 50m away and people here are saying that Big Bird has a reputation of having worse standards than a prison. I was just someone that witnessed it first hand. Overall the place is very naff and not cared for. If I would advice anyone go somewhere else that's nice... you'll end up spending the same if not less after the charges Big Bird charge you for internet and fridge space.

Big Bird Backpacker is the worst backpack I have ever seen, dirty sheets, coakroaches in the room, more expensive than most of the hostel in Brisbane. But this is not the worst part, the staff is mean and take advantage of you by letting you think you are booking for Chill Backpacker and then putting you in Big Bird as they are the same company. They are rude, not comprehensive and just want your money even if it means lying and ripping you off. Don’t go there you’ll find cheaper and way better accommodation elsewhere.

As I had no money left big bird was the place I could afford, and man it was horrible. The rooms had a fan - which was a plus. But even the people in there made the biggest mess ever; the staff should def do something about it, bc new people can’t even be there for all their stuff. The kitchen is the grosest thing i’ve ever seen, mold and green everywhere, you could really get sick!! I asked the staff twice!!! If they please could clean it, nothing happened. It’s an open kitchen, so expect flies and ants - everywhere. Bathrooms where bad - positive side, they could’ve been worse. Staff Is nice though, but cleaners need to be told where to actual clean. I don’t think the fridges have been cleaned once.. I left earlier, I just couldn’t be in it. You can clean for accommodation, but you stay at big bird?! Who wants to clean 14 hours for that type of accommodation.. not me

Not sure where to start.. stayed for 2 nights in 6 bed mixed dorm - the room was like a prison cell with concrete floors, dirty rug, no glass in the ‘windows’ but cardboard instead. Very loud (because it was next to the road and no actual windows to isolate the noise). Had a french couple in the room that constantly talked at night and tried to have sex, the guy was staying there illegally as well.. no lockers, No wi-fi well apart from the 10 min joke of a connection. $10 deposit for the key and $10 deposit for cutlery - never seen anything like it! No air con but little fan crammed in the corner. Bathrooms are a joke- no hangers, shelves or anything to put your stuff on so everything gets soaked unless you leave it outside the cubicle. No separation for males or females. $24 per night in this place is an absolute joke. If you want a prison like experience then go ahead. The one plus was bed was comfortable 🤷‍♀️

Me and my friend stayed here for a week in Feb. The hostel is right on the corner of two busy roads so take caution when crossing. When you cross the road, it is near many shops. Its not too far of a walk into the city centre. Close to train station. You have to pay a 10 dollar deposit for plates and cutlery, they dont seem to mention this to you when you check in. Kitchen is clean, but busy full of people especially in the evenings. In the nights, people were very very loud upstairs on the rooftop. cheap, very good if youre a budget traveler.

I booked this hostel after I read all the review and honestly I couldn't find all the bad things that the people are talking about. Yes, the hostel is basic but what do you pretend for $18 per night? I was expecting worst. the staff is really nice and clean the hostel twice a day. They share the reception with the Chill Backpacker and you can go up to the 3rd and 4th floor over there and they are really cool! If you're looking for a cheap and chill place to stay, book here.

I liked this hostel! I wasn’t expecting much as it was cheap & the reviews were savage. However, as I’ve found before much of the bad online comes from spite or just an unrealistic view of what you could have expected. I looked for but could not find the issues some people had with this place. I found all the staff very helpful at all times, the toilets, showers, kitchen, everything really clean and you can not argue with the value when you pay so little. Security was good with electronic touch keys and the location frankly was superb just along from the main bus station in the city. I stayed 2 nights more than originally intended. The reception is shared with Chill Backpackers next door & I liked the fact that I could use the common areas there too. Great stay!
