Detailed Reviews
Great hostel with lovely rooms and plenty spacious enough for bags and everything with lockers even when the room is full. The kitchen is very well equipped with knives that actually appeared to be sharpened making it so much easier to chop. There was an abundance of fridge and dry food storage space as well with people frequently putting food in the free food section when they left rather than wasting the food. The view of Brisbane was great from the rooftop which was nice to look at when you were eating your food. It was also nice to have chilled water taps specifically for bottles and glasses which is a really nice simple touch after drinking lukewarm water at a couple of hostels

That view is pretty special, isn't it! Hope you had a chance to enjoy a drink from our rooftop bar or had a dip in the pool up there. We have cool water bubblers at a lot of our properties as we don't sell bottled water due to its impact on the environment. Instead we have good quality reusable bottles for sale, and lots of free water!

The YHA is a 10-minute walk from the Transit Center that handles buses, trains, and airport connections. Security is essential for hostels, and the YHA has, in each room, very large ndividual lockers that include, inside, electric and USB outlets to safely charge electronics. Kitchen and lounge areas are spacious, but the highlight in my opinion is the large terrace, which contains a small pool. All of downtown Brisbane, including the river, is visible, and it's a venue to view and photograph sunrise and sunset. There's a travel office on site that can book tours. Always ask if there is a discount off the list price of a tour. A large supermarket and shopping center is a 5-minute walk from the hostel, and several bus lines have stops down the road. It's a fine overall choice for a stay in this wonderful city.

Hi Steve - it is an awesome view, isn't it! We love how you can watch the sun go down over the river and the city. Hope you also enjoyed our rooftop bar - great for sitting back and relaxing with that view!

Staff are very lovely and accomodating during COVID times. My partner and I were put in a four bed dorm by ourselves which was very reassuring. The hostel itself is quite pleasant but could do with a bit more cleaning, especially the kitchen and dining area. Cooking/preparing food in the kitchen proved to be quite difficult as there are very basic facilities and hardly any fridge space. There was piles of food in plastic bags in all of the fridges. In addition, the corridors smelt a little funky and there was also a fair amount of bogeys/snot wiped onto all of the walls in our dorm?! (Not quite sure what was going on there?) Apart from that, the hostel is quite quiet which is good if you just want to relax. The rooftop bar is very nice, offering cheap beers and the view of the city is amazing!

I stayed for two nights when arriving in Brisbane. The hostel is in walking distance from Roma Street Station and is on a road with a few other hostels. It’s near a Coles (supermarket) which is handy.
Had a double room with bathroom. Functional with good view of river. Only let down was it was a joining room so I could hear everything in the room next door.
Check in was perfunctory - staff member was deep in conversation with someone else rather than chatty to me.
Basic place if you just want to get your head down.

HI - sorry there were noise issues with the interconnecting room. They are obviously there as a good option for larger family groups etc who need two rooms. If you ever have concerns like that at one of our hostels, just have a chat with reception or the manager to see if there is an alternative option they can move you too. Brisbane has a lot of different room options.

Recommend if you are looking for a clean and quality place to stay and are a budget traveller.
This yha has a very high standard compared to others. It is more like a youth hotel with bunk beds rather than a backpackers place. You also meet travellers of all ages, families and youth groups around the place.
The rooms are super tidy and serviced daily, spacious luggage lockers that fit a large suitcase (fantastic!) and are light filled with aircon or windows to be opened.
The kitchen is very big, nice rooftop terrace with city views and pool area. Tv lounge and soon it’s own co working hub which I think is a great addition to the concept.
Free luggage storage for guests and friendly and helpful staff.

We ended up here due to every motel in Brisbane sold out for Pink concert. To our surprise we enjoyed our stay and would likely stay again. The staff were friendly, the room was clean and had a great view. The common area is closed by midnight which was great as there was no noise. Had a minor issue with the aircon shutting off every 4-5 hours and not being able to be adjusted but I believe the staff were going to look into it.

Dear Gemma, We're delighted to hear that despite the circumstances that led you to us, you had an enjoyable stay at our hostel. Providing a comfortable and welcoming experience for our guests is our top priority, and we're thrilled that you found our staff friendly, the room clean, and appreciated the great view. We're sorry to hear about the minor issue with the air conditioning. Our maintenance team has been made aware of this and will address it promptly to ensure it doesn't inconvenience any future guests. It's wonderful to hear that you found the closure of the common area by midnight beneficial for ensuring a peaceful environment for rest. Your feedback is greatly appreciated, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back for another enjoyable stay in the future. Pros:
close to train station and supermarket
Nice view from the top
Lots of food storage areas
Bed was okay
Cons:
showers smelled like urine all the time?
Showers were cold and literally no water came out of them?? I’d say the sink tap had better pressure than the shower
Birds in the kitchen? Staff slowly made their way up to try remove them.
Not very social. Most people there lived there for a while and were quite rude. Wouldn’t recommend for a solo traveller.
For some reason the staff were always extremely stressed out and acted strange. When checking in the woman asked if we had ever stayed with YHA before and we said no…. She was persistent that we did and kept going on about how the system said we have. We just agreed then so we could hurry up with the process?? What on earth was that about I have no idea.
Later that evening I went to get a fizzy drink from the fridge and I stood at the reception and the receptionist said to me “what do you want I’m extremely busy here”…. Bit of an odd way to treat someone.

Thank you very much for staying with us, Hannah. We are located in a great location, you're right. And the view is well worth the trip to level 5! Hot water can take a little while to reach you as the building is so big. Yes, chasing pigeons out can be a fun exercise! But we have put deterrents in place for them now. There are aspects mentioned in your review we would love to change your mind about. We do appreciate your review and hope to see you again! Cheers, YHA

I travel solo all over Australia for almost 2 months and stay with YHA 80% of my accommodation. YHA Brisbane is one of the best YHA (at par with YHA Adelaide) in my opinion in term of safety, value, culture, management. I like the clean kitchen, plenty of outdoor space in the super central location. Maybe just need to pay a bit attention to the building maintenance. Another downside is some rooms are facing noise on the ever train construction 24/7 next door if you are a light sleeper. Which completely outside of the control of the YHA. The downside is completely out weight by the plus side. Highly recommended and I will stay here again and again. Also the staff are easy to deal with and approachable.

What a fab place for travelers of all ages. Plenty of different areas to hang out and relax, having a pool was a big plus and plenty of loungers about. Kitchen a good size too, pay 10 dollar deposit for your own crockery/cutlery which is good.
Location good for trains and buses, and easy walk to centre or jump on a scooter.
Definitely would stay there again

This was a basic but mostly reasonable place to stay. A woman at reception didn't believe me in the afternoon when I told her our heater was broken (it was only blowing out cold air). She insisted temperatures were centralised. When I went down again in the evening (it was very cold) another staff member came with me and agreed our room was like a fridge, but said it was too late that night to get it fixed. After one cold night, maintenance fixed it.
The beds were comfortable, the location is good. Tables upstairs were very grubby with food left on them when we first arrived, so we didn't go back up. I would also have liked more information about how to get fresh towels. If I needed to stay again, I'd be more assertive about problems. The fear of "Karen-ing" is starting to make life difficult for women!

What time does swimming pool close in summer ?Where can I get bus tickets from nearby ?
Hi Fitz8,
Thanks very much for getting in touch. Our swimming pool is closed from 11pm until 5am daily and opened all other hours. The pool recently underwent annual maintenance for a short period over winter, however has reopened again for normal usage.
Most bus tickets can be bought direct from the driver as you board. Cash is required and there are no Eftpos/credit card facilities on board. You can also use a GoCard (similar to the London Oyster Card or Japan Suica or Pasmo cards), which saves you 30% on normal adult fares. You can purchase a GoCard from the Brisbane Transit Centre on Roma St, just 600 metres walk from the hostel.
Looking forward to seeing you soon!
