Ace Hotel Sydney reanimates the historical Tyne Building in Surry Hills, built above Australia’s first kiln discovery. Inspired by the rich history of Surry Hills and the warm, cinematic color palette of the Australian landscape, the hotel marks Ace’s first stake in the Southern Hemisphere and was designed in partnership with Flack Studio. The building’s design merges the past with the present, stirred by the city’s rough-hewn history: the renegade razor gangs that ruled the 1920s, the modernist art boom of the 1960s, the Gay Solidarity Group protests of the 1970s and the vibrant cultural coalescence of generations of migrant communities. LOAM, a neighborhood spot for natural fare, anchors the lobby level along with café Good Chemistry, plus there’s a bar smackdab in the hotel’s lobby. Up top there’s Kiln, an 18th-floor rooftop restaurant and bar helmed by Beau Clugston, with a design by Fiona Lynch. Ace Sydney is a neighborhood place, with an invitation open to all

Wonderful vibe at this recently opened boutique hotel in Surry Hills. The old brick factory has been refitted into a groovy industrial chic by Melbourne based interior designer David Flack. And the looks are also super functional. We enjoyed one of the two Loft Suites which offer three distinct areas. Master bedroom, living/dining/bar and big bathroom area. Twin shower room behind it’s own metal frame-reeded-glass door, double basin vanity and toilet, also behind its own glass door, was wonderful if looking for privacy in these intimate areas. Solid sliding doors between spaces enhanced that even more; keeping internal noises close. Back to back televisions in master and living areas also offered an inbuilt chrome casting function. Perfect for Netflix et al. Brass fittings were a feature and also for sale for those wanting to repeat the look at home. The hotel offers three great food outlets. A cute cafe that opens out onto the rear street; fully serviced Loam restaurant for breakfast lunch and dinner on the main level and rooftop Kiln for that special fine dining occasion. Next to Loam is a wonderful bar lounge area which is so popular with guests and locals in the evening. It’s all about the vibe at the Ace and if you enjoy some live music, DJ pumps and the occasional monologues this is where you can get your night started. Don’t worry the sounds end round 10pm and given the solid structure of the building don’t appear to infiltrate the rooms. The hotel is staffed by a young and knowledgeable crew. Being greeted each day with a big smile and a genuine interest in your day is wonderful. Surry Hills is such a great location to the CBD, first class restaurants, China Town, Hyde Park and the Sydney Opera House. While booking cars was easy, we mostly walked to shops, cafes, the Opera House and harbour ferries. We had such a blast at the Ace and will definitely rebook!

Lovely newly built and sustainable hotel. I stayed here with my family for 6 nights and we had a really good time. Best part about the hotel is it’s staff, they have managed to hire all super sweet people who are helpful and give their best for the guests. They will take your luggage, give you free masks, borrow umbrellas and serve you with utmost respect. We also worked from their for 2 days and the library area and cafe were amazing for that. Gym has all high quality equipments. So all in all a very pleasant stay! Will definitely recommend.

Once you get over the $100 incidental hold/ night and get yourself settled with some tea, you will love every part of it.

Note - A small feedback from me would be to supply handwash instead of soap and provide some basic tea, coffee complimentary in the room. It will take the experience to whole another level.

Newly opened in a really convenient area between Chinatown and Surry Hills. The biggest plus of this hotel is that it is pet friendly so my corgi Marlee loved it! Pets stay in medium rooms only and there is a surcharge (please keep this in mind).

Lovely gym with all the equipment you need - treadmill, elliptical bike, cross trainer, rower, free weights, chest press, leg curl.

Room was well thought out and had a mid century modern feel. Very spacious with a king bed. Please note that there is no free tea, coffee or bottled water in the room. Which is why I gave it 4 stars.

However the pet friendly nature of the hotel makes up for the negatives which isn't many. The hotel can supply water bowl and futon for your dog.

A stylish hotel in a great location with friendly staff who try very hard. Unfortunately let down by housekeeping and the restaurant. Despite checking in early evening, we entered the room and were met with the sight of messy beds, bathroom and rubbish from the previous occupants. The duty manager was very apologetic and provided complimentary breakfast. Sadly, this did not compensate as 2 of the breakfast dishes were overcooked. There were other disappointing incidents related to housekeeping such as the room not being made up on one of the days. Also, on booking we requested specific pillows from the pillow menu but needed to ask 4 times before they materialised. Despite mugs and long life milk being provided, sugar, teaspoons and a kettle weren't. From the minibar list it looked like a single teabag cost $2. The room was relatively expensive so I expected a much higher standard and attention to detail. Granted, it was a busy long weekend but more housekeeping staff should be rostered on.

Hi 833buy, Thank you for your feedback from your stay last month. My apologies for the delay in responding, I have recently joined the team. Industry wide there has been a huge struggle finding and retaining housekeeping staff, whilst this shouldn't have been an issue for you personally, know that I apologise for the many issues you encountered over your stay. Know that we have spent a considerable amount of time upskilling and training our now full team of Housekeepers so these issues will not occur again. Tea bags are now complimentary and all rooms have sugar, milk and spoons. Please reach out to me directly at adam.whitley@acehotel.com if you would be keen to come for a future stay as we would love to restore your faith to both the brand and hotel. Best Wishes, Adam Whitley - Director of Rooms

Travelled with my daughter to Sydney to take in some Sydney festival performances and a bit of sight seeing.
We stayed in a double room. We were offered a very quiet and clean room on the 14th floor with panoramic views looking over Surry Hills/ Darlinghurst.
The room was well designed, very comfortable and clean. The design made the most of the space. Water pressure in the shower was great. Mattresses were firm but not uncomfortably so. The beds seemed to be short- would advise tall people to enquire about their length (am 168cms/5”7 ish and my feet felt close to the edge). The room could do with a few more hooks or racks to place towels on… but that’s no game changer.
We also had a couch at one end, which was a great place to lounge.
All staff were most helpful- from checking in to cleaning staff to lobby waitstaff.
The location was perfect for all our adventures.
Highly recommend the Ace!

We had a great stay for the most part - it's a warm hotel, comfortable room, nice bar etc. A few issues:

I booked this place for my partner who was interested in listening to the turntables in our room - he's a vinyl collector. The website clearly states that you can purchase the vinyl records they provide/take them home and you'll just be charged for them - WELL, it was a nightmare getting confirmation on this. We had different answers and staff just had no idea at all over 3 days. Some told us they're absolutely not to be taken (website states otherwise), some told us we could and they just need to confirm the price (never got back to us), some told us we could purchase the turntable but not the vinyl!? Just very annoying and felt like we were sold a little bit of a lie overall.

Finally, no coffee or room service to be able to get coffee in the room was very annoying. There was a kettle and cups for tea I assume but no coffee packets or machine. Really inconvenient

Fun and vibrant hotel in Surry Hills. From the warm and welcoming arrival to the coffee shop, restaurant, and bar -- everyone was efficient and helpful. This hotel is close to local restaurants and shops and very easy to connect with public transport. The rooms are compact but efficiently laid out and were serviced every day, with linen changes every third day (unless requested)

Stayed here for a night whilst visiting family in the city. Rooms were spotless and the guitars and record player in the room was such a lovely touch! I also loved the addition of a steamer in the room which I’ve not seen in any hotel before. The hotel has such a fun-loving approach and the staff were delightful. My family and I dined in LOAM which was outstanding and the service followed suit. Unfortunately we couldn’t dine in their rooftop restaurant as it was booked out, so will have to return! I’d definitely recommend the orange wine which is served in carafes - another great touch. All in all, 10/10. Perfect for a pit stop in the city - just a 15min walk from George St and a 10min walk to central station. Thank you so much for having me!

Beautiful interiors, interesting vibe, but probably wouldn’t stay here again.

As a hotel designer I appreciated the exquisite details of all the rooms and the loam restaurant bar, just stunning. Lobby/arrival zone a bit of a let down however. Not sure what they were thinking there… no sense of arrival and cluttered with merch. Staff are friendly enough but after staying there 3 nights I think I only spoke to a staff member once, the day we arrived. The experience felt more like an airbnb experience to be honest versus a 5 star hotel. I also never saw the same staff member more than once, no sort of familiarity when entering or exiting the hotel.

Room service and restock of tea coffee milk a little lax. The room we had (the large room) was a decent size with high ceilings and thoughtfully stylish from top to bottom. Massive banquette sofa and lots of clothing storage with quality appliances. The bath was great.

The floor plan however sucked. Hated that you entered the room through the bathroom. Hated that the toilet was only separated by a fluted glass door to the entry of room and bedroom. Not romantic, probably wouldn’t recommend this room at all if you are a new couple for this reason, no privacy.

Hi BartoBeyond, Thank you for the detailed review following on from your stay with us! Great to hear you appreciated the design and styling of both Loam and Lobby Bar and your hotel room. Whilst it is extremely sad to hear comments around our team, who always receive shining feedback in almost all reviews, this definitely is valuable to hear. Regardless of arrival or departure time or location you are in around the property, the teams should always be engaging, friendly and helpful. Sorry to hear the room layout was not to your liking. I'm sure you appreciate wanting to maximise the use of both natural light and room size in hotels. Should it assist with your choice of rooms next time, our Accessible, Double Double and Suites all have fully separated facilities and I do hope you would consider us again if needed. Its always my pleasure to assist with reservations, so I can be reached directly at adam.whitley@acehotel.com. Thank you again for the feedback Barto. Warm Regards, Adam Whitley - Director of Rooms

Hi Daniel T, as trots4 said, it is around a 20 minute minute stroll depending which light rail line you are getting. Central stations stops are around 10 minutes way (Chalmers street), or the Haymarket stop by Capitol Theatre is around the same distance. Hope that helps!
