due to covid-19 situation we wanted to getaway. This seemed like the perfect place to go.
Arrival & Check in was seamless... with the ability to park your car in the main Zoo Car Park (undercover)
Rooms were neat & Tidy... We stayed in an Animal View Room, where we had 2 cuddly koalas sitting in a tree only a few arms length from our balcony.
Included in our stay was a 3 course dinner (WHICH WAS AMAZING) in the site restaurant Me-Gal. Also a Buffet breakfast, which due to health restrictions was changed to Table Service.
We also had a walk through of the Zoo Sanctuary which is only for Retreat guests. And an early morning walk through of the Zoo before opening.
There is nothing that i can fault with this location. The staff are extremely professional and helpful and the site itself is very quiet (which is strange being next to the zoo) .
Once checked in, you have the ability to access the zoo from a set of gates which removes the need to walk up to the main gates.
All in all. This location was a beautiful property, with a wonderful view of the harbour
yummy Food & Drinks... what more could you ask for. We would highly recommend for families or couples to book any packages this location offers.

What an amazing weekend at wildlife retreat at Taronga Zoo. We stayed in an animal view room, we had koalas right at our double opening doors with a view over the sanctuary where you could see paddy melons, echidnas and Wallabies. The sanctuary is kept emaculate and the keepers are so attentive with the animals.
The retreat has a beautiful bar area with incredible views of the city, showcasing the harbour bridge and opera house. They also have their restaurant MeGal which has alcarte breakfast and a delicious dinner menu. The restaurant also has amazing city views.
Every part of the retreat is kept immaculately, extremely clean and well maintained.
The staff were incredibly welcoming, helpful and very accommodating. You are able to access the zoo early on the day you checkin and also the day you check out. They have tours before and after the opens/closes and also of the sanctuary.
Brilliant weekend, couldn’t ask for more a great experience.

The animal view room on the ground floor had a great view of koalas right outside our balcony. The room was very comfortable and well appointed. A wonderful nights sleep punctuated by the zoo's ambience. Meals are included and were quite good. Breakfast was very good. Drop your bags off at the door and park the car in the multi storey car park a short walk up the hill and is quite safe overnight. Zoo entry and a private tour of the native animal area and bird aviary are included and are highlights.

The location itself is fantastic. You really feel in nature although the city is literally across the waters. The views are terrific and it could be such a great place. It needs bit of fine tuning, especially given the cost of the experience. There are some really good prices for accommodation currently so if you charge in the high 500's per night, you need to deliver a world class experience. Even if you provide breakfast and dinner, you are still charging $400 for the rest.
Firstly, we tried to ring the retreat ahead of our stay. Nobody was ever picking up the phone and we got an answering machine asking us to leave our reservation # and we would get a call back. We did but no call back.
The staff were great. Very friendly and enthusiastic. The food was ok. Not amazing but adequate. The kind of dinner that would normally set you back $100/$110 for 2. The selection was pretty good and the drinks were reasonably priced.
The room itself was only ok. It lacked privacy and the balconies are really on top of one another. Most other retreats have a sense of privacy but we really didn't feel this way there.
The biggest let down was the animal interaction. We really thought it would have been a lot more than what we got (which was pretty much nothing) It was like a normal entry to the zoo or at least it felt this way. For us that was the main attraction.
Had we stayed at the View hotel in North Sydney with the same view, we could have picked where we wanted to go for dinner and bought zoo entry tickets and still save $150. We thought about it but decided to give Taronga a go.

It was a shame that given its location, they have not managed to get more interactions with the animals. Surely it is the #1 reason customers would book and spend the extra $. If they could fix this, up the food and drinks offering a little, it could be a world class retreat. For now, it felt a little short of the money we spent.

Response from Carl Rickards, General Manager at Wildlife Retreat At Taronga
Responded 13 Aug 2020
Dear SydneyElite, Thank you so much for your feedback and we are so sorry about the issues you had getting in touch with the team before you stayed, rest assured those issues have since been fixed. I was also sorry to read that you didn't feel like the experience delivered the value in comparison to the amount you paid. This is clearly not what we are striving to achieve, Taronga's focus is completely on conservation so ensuring that we have engaged our guest with that message is very important to us. We will continue to work on our tours and make sure that they are more special than what the regular zoo guests enjoy. Again, I am sorry that we didn't deliver an exceptional stay and I do hope you will give us a second chance in the future. Kind regards Carl Rickards

AMAZING location with breath-taking views of Sydney but it lacks the refinement it needs when you charge the money they do. It shows very little value for money. Firstly the activities should be a lot more private. When staying at places like Spicers for example the activities organised are a lot more private and tailored. At Wildlife, it is more treated like a cheap tour group that does not reflect the price paid. I also expected a lot close encounters with the animals. It does not happen at all. You get the same treatment as if you buy tickets to the zoo itself.
The rooms are ok but again, they lack the plush feel you would expect. the lighting was terrible and the beds were the worst we have encountered in hotels for a very long time. Literally 2 singles pushed together. You could really feel the crack in the middle.
Food was ok but nothing to rave about. I found the portions quite ok but the choice and quality were not the best. If they are trying to compete with the great retreats and lodges of Australia, they have a very long way to go. It still feels very amateur and a bit cheap, relying on the location and the zoo.

I received a one night stay in the Taronga Wildlife Retreat as a Christmas present and it was one of the most incredible and unique gifts I have ever experienced. We stayed in a room overlooking a koala enclosure. The retreat is luxurious with some of the best views of the Sydney skyline I have ever seen. The room was spotless and we were provided with dressing gowns and slippers on request. All the staff were extremely helpful and friendly and they did everything they could to ensure we had the bet experience possible. We even received a bonus after hours tour of the zoo with two very knowledgeable keepers as well as the bush tour exclusive to those staying in the retreat. We woke up to find a koala sat in a tree just outside our window which is an experience not many could say they have had. The food was to an excellent standard, I just wish there was an option for lunch as well. This is by far the best way I have ever experienced a zoo, there is nothing quite like falling asleep to the noise of animals from all over the globe. Well worth the money, I would happily pay to experience this again. Once again, I cannot thank the staff at the retreat enough for how accommodating they were, some of the best customer service I have ever received. This is a great way to support the zoo and animal conservation and makes a great gift/surprise getaway for any animal lover.

We visited Wildlife retreat during the October long weekend. It was a bit mayhem and it didn't feel like they had heard of COVID. Very little precautions were taken and they certainly did not respect social distancing. We booked an animal view room but it is the luck of the draw whether or not you can see animals from your room.
The included tours were very (VERY) crowded and made me feel very uncomfortable to be stuck between all the other people partaking in the activity. I raised it with the guide but got brushed off.
The food wasn't great and don't be too hungry, the portions are fairly small.
The location was great but it is so sad to see wild animals confined to such a small space so close to a city for our "enjoyment" and the profit of this resort. Overall it wasn't an enjoyable stay that my boyfriend booked for us without telling me. I would have chosen somewhere else.

We LOVED our weekend at the wildlife retreat at Taronga!
Every single staff member we encountered was proactive, helpful, welcoming and so positive.
The tariffs seem expensive but it is exceptional value for money. Two days Zoo entry, special small-group tours, the most delicious dinner and breakfast and super luxe rooms. You would struggle book a room in any 5-star hotel in Sydney on a Saturday for much less, so the dining and experiences are a bonus.
The perfect way to experience a true Sydney icon. Would definitely recommend!

everything is prefect, especially for animal lover. it is above expectation!
we were there for new year eve and it was amazing. After checkin, they have guided tour in the sanctuary, or you can visit the zoo on your own. We love the sanctuary tour! We can see them closely. They are taking good care of all the animals while they have a "natural" environment to live in.
We picked the Animal View Room. It was pricey but with seeing a Koala hanging on the tree right outside your window? I would say it worth. You can watch it all day - eating, climbing, sleeping, and even making noise.
We sure we will go again some time later.

We stayed here for my surprise birthday gift on an Ultimate Retreat Package which includes accom, meals and private tours. It was the best present. We stayed in the Echidna
animal room, where you can see the koalas from your room. The rooms are clean, quiet, spacious, eco friendly. It felt like we were overseas. The view of the wildlife sanctuary is unique and peaceful. Waking up to the sound of wildlife was breathtaking.

We went on private Tours of the Sanctuary (wildlife retreat) and new Savannah African Exhibit with knowledgable, passionate, friendly zoo staff. It was fantastic going into the zoo before it was open to the public, as we got to see wildlife being really active. I've been to Taronga zoo before but this was an amazing experience! The Savannah exhibit is great. We saw lions and giraffes being feed, gorillas playing etc.

The Seal show and Bird show are fun and worth seeing.

Meals include food at Me-gal Restaurant. Staff were friendly and attentive. Great relaxed atmosphere with a view of the harbour city. Since it was a special occassion, we got a lovely table by the window.

There are lifts and it's flat, so the retreat is wheelchair accessible and suitable for elderly, children etc. The layout is user friendly, clean, spacious and the restaurant, rooms, reception and zoo are all next to each other.

All the staff at the retreat, restaurant and zoo were friendly, passionate and provided excellent service. Even during this Covid pandemic with tough times, staff were really upbeat, happy and kept thanking us for supporting the animals by coming.

We loved our stay so much that we tried to stay longer. It's rewarding to know your money goes towards supporting the zoo and animals.
