Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is an older hotel in Sydney. So keeping that in mind as well as the price it is good value.
The room was clean and tidy, with a queen and 2 singles.
You had to run the hot water for 10 minutes to get it through the pipes. (as advised by a sign) Being on level 4 you could hear the traffic noise and pedestrian lights. Sometimes the trucks and busses would rattle the window. Light sleepers in this street facing room may find it an issue.
By prior arrangement the manager allowed us to drop off our luggage only a couple of small bags. This was really appreciated, thank you staff and management.

We had Room 42, the only one with an ensuite.

Check in was at the bar. The French barman called the English manageress.

The room was huge, gaving two singles and a comfortable Queen bed.

Especially from 0400 hours, rubbish trucks were noisy. The room had a great view of York St.

WiFi was fine. Aircon was effective.

The hot water took 10 to 15 minutes to appear. Presumably the pipes are in poor condition.

Just a bath towel each was supplied. No shampoo but there was soap.

Lighting was poor in the bedroom. There was a bar fridge. There was also a lift.

With Wynyard station only 110 metres away, A$100 was a bargain. No breakfast was included.

I stayed for six nights in this hotel and was very dissatisfied overall with the service. I was unable to access the wifi in the room and had to go outside for accessing it. When I asked to the staff, they were not cooperative at all and made a commitment to change the room but nothing happened. Apart from this, one of the washrooms was without a lock. This is too much. There was an electric kettle in the room but no wire. The tv was placed inside the room which was not working. I will rate my stay as 3/10.

A fabulous old historic hotel in the heart of the Sydney CBD offering very affordable accommodation.
The Occy features a lively, high-quality restaurant on Level 1 and a Bistro in the back bar, so food offerings are outstanding.
The hotel has undergone recent renovations but they have lovingly maintained the heritage of this grand old pub.
Keep in mind that this is pub-style accommodation at affordable rates and you will love this place.

My family of 4 stayed at this eclectic treasure. Friendly and accommodating staff and an amazing location. It’s in the heart of the city and less than a block from the train station to easily access any attractions. Tons of shopping and restaurants blocks away and a lovely restaurant on site. The building is charming and beautiful, refurbished in the original style and elegance. Firm beds and quality linen, which is an obsession of mine on vacation. It was amazing to see the hustle and bustle of the city but the noise from the street didn’t invade our room. This was a perfect oasis, in the middle of everything! We loved our stay!!!

The location is the only great thing about this hotel.
We stayed for 5 nights during new years.
The air conditioning was making a (very) loud bobbling sound, even when it was off.
And water was dripping on the floor, we couldn’t tell where it came from, but the carpet was wet, and the dripping sound was like torture. I spoke with two different staff members and I even rote them an email, but no response at all.

Don’t expect any cleaning, in those 5 days we stayed we on got clean towels and the garbage bin was emptied.

We don’t mind shared toilet and bathroom, as long as it is clean. But that was not the case in the Occidental Hotel.

Last but not least. Smoking in the rooms are prohibited, but we could tell from the smell that our neighbour was smoking in the room, in all the five days we were there.

The staff were friendly and helpful on arrival. The hotel did shut its doors early (6:30 pm on recall), with no meal options. We could still enter by key. The location was excellent. The room space was ok. A little noisy (to be expected in a central city location). The lighting was dim. The lack of hot water was the major disappointment, even though we ran the tap for at least 30 mins, so we had cool showers.

I’ve been in this pub many times over the years but it seems to have lost its way recently. This evening a very rude woman behind the bar, seemed keen to finish her shift and resented customers wanting a drink. Recognise it’s difficult getting staff at the moment but the pub needs to do better.

This is very good choice for a solo traveller. Central to Wynyard and your on their doorstop. Share bathroom but everything clean. Comfortable bed and no fuss check in. Recommended. The rate is very reasonable too for Sydney. The Rocks and Circular quay close.

While in Sydney, I had intended to attend a meeting at the Occidental Hotel - regular meeting held there. Due to an extremist left leaning group's objection to free speech, the speaker to that meeting was refused by management. What an affront to FREE SPEECH. The left leaning speakers demand their extreme views are heard but refuse to listen to ordinary people exercising their free speech at a regularly held meeting on varying views. Has made me reconsider the Occidental for my accommodation this time.
