Despite a few reviews being critical we were quite positive about this hotel. We booked five nights from the internet quite blindly not knowing the establishment.
The room price was excellent at about £49 per night. Where else can you get such a price in a large touristy city like Sydney?
We avoided the breakfast as the cost was too high and the food eating area (I deliberately dont call it a restaurant area), looks dreadful, unattractive, really quite horrid.
Location is great. From the front door a 100m walk to Central Station, Tram L1 to Darling Harbour, Tram L2 to Circular Quays and China Town around the corner.
On arrival we met a lovely helpful Reception gentleman. He told us he could give a discount if we didnt use house keeping.
The lift, at the back of the hotel was modern, smooth and fast. We were on the fourth floor in room 429 which has a dark corridor and no real outlook, unless you want to watch smokers on the internal link bridges.
The lift and the room lights needed a room key. The bed was very comfortable and the rest of the room, including the room safe and tv were adequate, as was the bathroom. Not enough coffee and tea satches were available and a pack of little biscuits would have been a nice touch.
We had both air conditioning and a ceiling fan, the fan being very quiet.
Reception was helpful. We booked a late check out but this didnt seem to be passed on. We got locked out of our room at 11.05 which was a real nuisance and I notice this is mentioned in other reviews. My wife thought she had lost her purse. A gentleman at reception was very helpful and displayed a very caring attitude. We were impressed.
The front exit of this establishment is attractive and a good transport hub. The rear entrance is where taxi or shttlebus pick up takes place.
If you exit the rear passageway, walk io the one way street in front of you until the junction (50m), across that road is a great pavement cafe. You will find it great for a cheap quality breakfast.
After all my positives, now fir a negative. We found the bar noisy, not very clean, very expensive compared to the hotel room rate and, quite ignorant bar staff who plonk the beer down in front of you, whilst conversing with other people behind the bar. She didnt even bother to give eye contact ir use the magic words "thank you". I found the eating area and the bar area and bar staff let the hotel down.

TGSH is one of my favourite places to stay. Apart from the magnificent entrance, I've never encountered reception staff who didn't look professional or be helpful.
The location is more or less adjacent to every mode of public transport in Sydney & a few hundred metres from Dixon St.
Rooms are a nice size with TV, kettle & fridge & the ensuites are very nice.
If you don't want a window opening out to the large atrium, ask for a (George or Thomas) st room. Definitely try them out.

Located in the heart of everything Sydney has, including a tram literally right outside the hotel which runs between Central Station and Circular Quay.

You can stay here for under $100 per night at the moment. They have suspended servicing the rooms due to COVID although it’s probably cost cutting, linen and towels can be collected from reception and you can leave rubbish outside the door for collection.

The rooms are comfortable and have everything necessary for a short stay although the ducted heating / cooling and bar fridge was annoying noisy in the early hours.

I travel for business and CONVID-19 meant I had to change my reservation three times - but this was always accommodated seamlessly by the excellent staff at this hotel.
I checked in and went up to my room only to realise I had been upgraded to a suite! It is a shame I only stayed for one night to enjoy this wonderful facility.
I had drinks and dinner in the fine old bar; the staff were warm and friendly and the food was at the higher end of strandard pub fare.
I was particularly impressed by the subtle pandemic precautions evident throughout the property.
Hand sanitiser was freely available at the reception desk and at the bar and the entire premises looked to have been thoroughly cleaned recently and had a faint but pleasant aroma of disinfectant.
I must say I have always liked the look of this grand old edifice and enjoy the central location and variety of entertainment and hospitality options nearby - and for the price you just can't beat it.

Checked in at approx. 8pm. Were given room at 8th floor (last). We noticed the loud hum noise in the room, but we thought it's coming from room AC.
Went out for dinner and returned around 10pm. Turned off AC, noise still there, unchanged, not possible to sleep. Obviously it was coming from hotel AC, not room AC.
Notified reception desk. Gent from reception desk came into the room and acknowledged the noise, not possible to sleep there. But he was to new and unexeperienced and didn't knew what to do. Asked us to wait 20 mins until next shift - more experienced - would come.
Half an hour later went again to reception desk. New shift (more experienced) was there, but they were unaware. Told the story again. Lady from reception desk came into the room. She also noticed the noise; agree not possible to sleep. Asked us to wait to talk to manager.
It was already 11pm.
She talked to manager: hotel fully booked, the only solution was to refund us and assist in finding another hotel.
Sleep is important, so we agreed thinking that assistance from hotel will quickly solve the issue. Bad thought.
They were unable to assist us in finding another hotel. While I was expecting that reception desk will make some phone calls and they'll give us options to choose, finding a new accommodation was proven mission impossible for them.
Instead they were very quick in proposing us earplugs.
So, past 11pm I had to find accommodation by myself.
Assistance from Great Southern with transportation there? Nope. Had to do it by myself.
Shortly after midnight we were at Holiday Inn Darling Harbour nearby. I recommend it.
Great Southern in Sydney? I recommend also. To avoid.

This hotel is a hidden gem. It is located in the Haymarket area of Sydney. If you want harbour views and luxury appointments this hotel is not for you, but if you want a spotless, friendly and central location this fits the bill completely. We were at the hotel from the 24th February 2023 to 6 March 2023 for the Pride Festival and the Sydney Mardi Gras. The staff were always friendly and helpful, the food, when we had lunches there, was great and very reasonably priced. One of the nicest things we did when we came back from the various activities was to sit out of the front of the hotel, at little French styled table and chairs and people watch as folk streamed by. The drinks were very reasonably priced, especially during happy hour. One more thing: we booked very early, at extremely good rates; by the time we arrived, during Pride, we could have been charged three times as much, but the hotel did not attempt to gouge us or try to up the rates. I would recommend this hotel to everyone, and we have every intention of using it every time we come to Sydney.

The only thing it has going for it now is its location, close to Sydney Central, Light Rail Market City, Supermarket and restaurants. I was a guest at this hotel for three nights during August, 2022, it was my 7th stay over the past 10 years, but I will be looking for better accommodation and value the next time I'm in Sydney. It appears that the hotel has undergone some recent renovations, The cramped 6th floor room I was given afforded an interesting view over Thomas Street at the rear of the hotel but no comfortable seating. On arrival, unwashed coffee mugs from a previous occupant, and cracked floor tiles in the shower was a turn off. As for breakfast in the ground floor dining room, bacon and eggs and a small sausage was served cold out of a bain-marie. For dinner the Chicken Parmigiana was uninspired but edible. The Great Southern is no longer the friendly hotel it was before 2021, and was very poor value at 150.00 per night. But perhaps that is just symptomatic of the changed world we live in.

We had two nights for the Vivid Sydney festival and this hotel was perfect. Right near the light rail station it is perfect location for public transport. Can get the tram to Circular quay and straight on to ferries. It was very clean and surprisingly quiet rooms. The hotel is busy downstairs but we couldn't hear it. Staff were very nice. Great value. We did find the parking pricey but realise now we could've left the car at home and taken public transport to the hotel, via train at central and circular quay tram stop. We didn't have the breakfast but it was really very reasonably priced, hot breakfast for $12 with sausages, eggs and more -YUM! , juices and tea/coffee. We caught light rail to glebe, walked to the Polish restaurant then walked home to the hotel. It is a very good location for several areas. The decor is a little dated but that did not matter to us, the bathroom was very clean and thats what matters! It's right opposite Paddys shopping markets, such a good spot, short walk to Darling Harbour.

Good for one night
"Due to covid" they are not servicing rooms until you leave.
This meant getting towels, sheets, cups, glasses, coffee, tea, milk, sugar toilet paper, tissues, soap and shampoo daily from reception- a pain.
Given where we are with covid- I think this is a cost cutting excercise.
Pity, as this is a reasonable budget hotel in a good location

Great Southern has one of the great breakfasts around for $24. The staff are obliging and courteous. The rooms are clean and the bathroom was compact but very clean. Shower was small with a truncated corner. The room had the basic furniture and supplies for tea and coffee. It is well situated being two blocks from Central Station, opposite the Haymarket light rail stop and near the Dulwich Hill light rail.
