Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed in the three bedroom house known as "The Granary" which is self-catered but we opted for meals in the main house which Simonetta kindly accomodated. The accomodation was lovely and the meals excellent. The grounds and surrounds are very pretty. Wonderful period furnishings which are worth seeing in and of themselves. Very pleasant to dine in the stately and elegant dining room.

We stayed here two nights and originally reserved dinner only for the first. Once it was quite clear how far it was to travel for anywhere to eat at night and that our first nights meal was exceptional, we asked to dine for our second night.

The house is exactly as described on the website. Simonetta makes excellent coffee which she offered us on arrival in the drawing room, The bathrooms are warm and modern. Sadly we didn’t explore the grounds as the weather was not delightful and it was rainy and chilly…in February!! Out room had heaters and there was a fire on at dinner so we were pretty comfortable.

The house is quite beautiful and it was a pleasure to stay.

We got very stuck for urgent accomodation after travelling and getting ill on a supposed camping holiday. We were desperate! And we were travelling with a dog! The lady at Gunyah was so sympathetic and moved things around for us and offered us Mulberry Cottage, a darling self contained cottage at a good price.

It has everything you could need in a lovely quaint space.
It is clean, everything provided and attention to detail.
It was quiet, had cows next door, lovely friendly chickens
The staff made sure we had things we needed, brought us extra firewood when the weather turned cold
The place has extensive, v sheltered grounds
We wandered around
On recovery, we loved the many walks in the local foothills, the scenery is stunning. The Rakaia Gorge Walkway, the Washpen Falls, the Awa Awa Rata Reserve, proximity to my fathers families homes in Methven and exploring that and my childhood home near Hororata was pure joy.

Thankyou Gunyah and Simonetta for your care and restoration
Fantastic medicine
Would have loved to experience your culinary delights but perhaps next time we will sample that

Thankyou so much
Not what we planned but somehow so much more.....
So peaceful

You’ll not see the photos of the converted garden shed we had to stay in for very good reason. They’d not want you to know you may - like us, end up there! Advertised as 4 star with WIFI (not useable) this shed fell well short of the advertised rooms. Make sure you’re not being put in the “Romantic/Mulberry Cottage”.
The floors were so springy I think the foundations were nonexistent. The bed was definitely not Temperpedic. Not sure how old. So close to the wall you had to squeeze past.
The TV was not set correctly, and had we not been reasonably good with getting it sorted, we’d have had to get the ‘owners’ assistance.
The entrance really let the place down - and should have been a red flag. We felt like we were going through the mud driveway to a cow yard.
Now, I’m sure there are plenty of reviews from people who get to experience the grand old homestead. But not us. Had we known this was going to be our accommodation for $200/night, we’d not have booked it.
Given the blatant false advertising and non disclosure of the accommodation being provided we feel the owners are grossly misrepresenting the accommodation and should put it right.

We needed an overnight near Methven and this sufficed but I would not go out of my way to come here. Very chilly in the room (end of Feb), no functional wifi (which was challenging as we had counted on this based on the website), plumbing seemed consistent with this being a very old, somewhat restored, Victorian home. I am sure people who like old Victorian would enjoy it but we really did not feel overly comfortable. Unlike other B&B's we stayed in, it seemed hard to get the owners attention even for things like showing up for breakfast at the agreed upon time (we called out hello but got no reply; same issue when I had a question shortly after arrival the day before). So worked for us as a 'stop over only' but would not truly recommend.

A one night getaway with some friends we had booked to stay in the Stablehands Quarters but Simonetta kindly upgraded us to the Granary which meant we had a bedroom each. The accommodation was excellent - everything we needed. We self catered for dinner and enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the dining room in the homestead the next morning. Only a short drive from Christchurch we felt a million miles away from our busy city lives. Such a peaceful spot with friendly welcoming hosts. I wished we had been able to stay longer.

We just want to thank Simonetta and the wonderful staff at Gunyah for the exquisite birthday lunch they put on for us. We were treated to a heavenly four course meal at their beautiful establishment and their food is absolutely to die for. I will be dreaming about their mouthwatering pear and almond tarte for many years to come. The hospitality was superb and the estate would be a sublime escape for people wanting a weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle in the Big Smoke. There are so many beautiful attractions nearby and I'd recommend Gunyah to anyone. Make sure to try some of Simonetta's conserves and relishes. They are beyond amazing and you can find them online and available at the new food hub at the Bush Inn Shopping Centre in Riccarton. Grazie per i bei ricordi!

We arrived after dark but with clear instructions and lights left on for us we found our home for the night without any issues.
The fire had been lit, and there were fresh eggs and milk in the fridge/freezer for us - thank you .
A lovely comfortable and spacious accommodation with both bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. Sadly we were only staying 1 night , but we loved our stay and will recommend to others heading through the area.

The place itself was very charming even though we are not really fan of classic styles. We mainly we're here due tot a changed of plans so we we're still glad.
If you like the more historic style the place is definitely a place for you.

The lady who checked us in was friendly and helpfull and alsof had a good recommendation for a restaurant. Methevn is a 20 minuten drive which was not too bad.

The room itself was ok. We only could not lock out door.

Breakfast was very good and definitely worth adding tot your booking.
