Located in remote Raja Ampat, Indonesia, our resort island is a true tropical hideaway. We are just south of the equator, hidden in an archipelago of uninhabited island. Our resort island is fringed with powder-white beaches and pristine coral reefs. With a maximum capacity of just 40 guests and a staff-to-guest ratio of 4 to 1, Misool offers exclusive adventure holidays and transformative experiences in pristine nature. Misool was built entirely of reclaimed tropical hardwoods, milled on site with our own portable sawmill. Our accommodations have been meticulously designed for comfort, privacy, and sustainability. All of our rooms feature Balinese-style open air bathrooms, air-conditioning, fresh hot and cold showers, mini-bars stocked with treats from around the archipelago, and handcrafted furniture and fittings. The worst part about Misool is the long slog to get there: trans Pacific flights, a red eye, and a long boat ride over unpredictably choppy waters. And still, it is well worth the slog. When you arrive you feel as though you’ve landed on a paradise surrounded by equally eager fellow travelers and greeted by friendly staff (most of whom are inspiring community members who’ve taken jobs in this hybrid hospitality-conservation position).

This was our second time visiting over two calendar years and I don’t think it will be our last. Misool exceeds all expectations: the remote, quiet, unplugged location, the pristine waters, the abundance of marine life, the spectacular vistas, no shortage of multiple daily water activities, and the comfy accommodations.

We’ve stayed in both South beach and in the lagoon overwater cottages and my husband and I are split about preferred location. On South beach you’ll have your own mini Robinson Crusoe experience with more quiet surrounds and a gorgeous beach to relax in after a long day of being out at the snorkel or dive sites. You’ll have to plan wisely to bring all that you need over to the dive center and to the lagoon side where all the action and meals happen. The benefit of the overwaters is that you are steps away from the dive center and restaurant—the nerve centers for guest activities on Batbitim.

If you’re able to go, go. It’s an amazing and life changing experience. I already miss the 2-3x daily snorkel schedule and visits with all my favorite marine animals (hello beautiful giant Pacific and reef mantas!). The corals alone were the most spectacular I’ve ever seen snorkeling anywhere else. Can’t wait to head back there someday soon.

Dear 1001anaq, The time commitment to travel all the way to Misool can seem quite daunting to some, and no matter how many times I make the journey, I am always relieved once I have made it to my final destination! Some aspects have made travelling much easier since Misool's inception, including a reliable and direct flight from Jakarta to Sorong, as well as Misool's brand-new transfer boat, which ran its maiden trip at the beginning of December 2019. Merantau, meaning 'to wander', has enough indoor reclining seats for all guests inside an air conditioned cabin, with the added option of outdoor seating at the stern, bow, and roof top. Our friendly staff are with you the length of the journey to offer drinks, snacks, and sunscreen for those parked outside. Though the speedboat transfer takes about the same time as it always has, approximately 4 hours one way, it is done in comfort with less bouncing due to the increase in size of the vessel. It seems that those who first choose the accommodation on South Beach are reluctant to stay anywhere else on return visits! The pristine, white sandy beach and jungle surroundings allows guests to feel that this secluded paradise is uniquely theirs to experience. Woven beach baskets in each room are to help guests with the convenience of carrying their belongings from one area to the next, and to keep items all together. And there is our friendly security team members, ready and willing to make 'water taxi' pick ups and drop offs to the South Beach, provided that it isn't low tide. 1001anaq, we absolutely loved having you both return for another visit! We hope to see you both back again soon for more snorkelling adventures and manta ray encounters!

I can't say enough good things about this place. It was one of the best vacations of our life. We just returned from Misool after spending a week there as part of a snorkeling group arranged through Snorkel Venture. The place is absolutely paradise, situated in the middle of the Coral Triangle, the most biodiverse coral reef on the planet. This eco resort is helping to both maintain and restore the coral and fish life in this area via its resort policies/programs and through its Misool Foundation.

The resort can accommodate only 40 people at one time so you have to book well in advance. It's also not easy to get there because it requires a plane ride to Sorong and then a 4 hour boat ride, but I can tell you that is well worth it .

We stayed in one of their over-the-water cottages. The staff here is amazing. I'm not the most seasoned snorkeler in the world, but the snorkeling guides made it so easy. This is also a huge diving destination. You will be amazed at the coral and fish life that lies around the resort and within very short boat rides around the area. We took two trips a day and never traveled more than 30 minutes from the resort.

Did I tell you that the staff was amazing? The food is also incredible. Many people who we met had been here several times.

I highly recommend this destination.

Hi stevek078030Q, Our team was so pleased to read that your stay ranked highly among all of your lifelong travels. It's always such a compliment when our guests depart with fond memories of both the beautiful location and our team's dedication to their work. Misool Foundation has many on-going projects within the area which are environmental and community focused, such as patrolling our 1,220 square kilometre marine reserve for illegal fishing activity, founding a kindergarten and employing school teachers for the local community, maintaining the area's only recycling program (Bank Sampah), contributing to manta ray identification and studies, and many more programs. One program in particular that both Misool Resort and Misool Foundation are particularly enthused, is our Coral Restoration program. This program involves a focus on rebuilding areas of the reef that have sustained damage prior to the establishment of the Marine Protected Area. Naturally broken coral fragments which still have live coral polyps are gathered around the reef and are attached to rebar structures, where, over time, the coral adheres to the rebar and continues to grow. It's incredible to see how large some coral colonies have become in just a few years! Though this program has been in place since 2013, our team took an even more dedicated focus to coral propagation since 2020. Not only were Misool Foundation's Ranger team members restoring reefs, but many of Misool Resort's staff took on this project with great zealousness; a thought of how we could occupy our time and help make the reefs even more abundant. We now invite guests to participate in a coral restoration dive during their stay if it is of particular interest. It's been so positive to find that guests are just are enthusiastic about this program as we are! Stevek078030Q, it was our pleasure to welcome you to Misool! We hope that we will be able to welcome you again soon!

We just returned from Misool and there is a good reason it gets such glowing reviews. This place is paradise on earth. It really is that good.

Not really much I can add to what others have already said. Misool is in a fantastic location, the accommodations are excellent, and the staff are beyond friendly and helpful. And the snorkeling - absolutely marvelous. We are snorkelers, not divers and we loved every second of our time in the water. I told a friend to imagine the nicest aquarium you have ever seen, times it by 10, and you're still not close to how good snorkeling is around Misool. We have been to a number of different snorkeling destinations around the world, including Bonaire, Belize, Mexico, Moorea and many others, and none comes close to Misool.

I could go on and on, but I suppose the most important question is, would we return? The answer is a resounding yes, and in fact already have three more trips planned.

Are there any downsides? I suppose the only two I can think of are that it is not an easy location to access and it is expensive. However, I see the fact that it's not easy to access as a positive as it helps keep those who aren't serious snorkelers or divers away, and therefore helps keep it pristine. You won't see anyone standing on coral, or taking "keepsakes" from the ocean floor. And no cruise ships, which to me at least is another big plus.

The only other downside is that it books up so quickly. But the reason it books up so quickly is because it is so good.

I also need to give a quick shout out to Rico, our snorkel guide. We loved every second we spent in the water with Rico, and I only hope he is still there when we return. He was very safety conscience and was brilliant at finding things in the water that we would have otherwise missed. A true gentleman in every sense of the word, and he made our time in the water so much better. Just can't give him a high enough recommendation.

So Misool, thank you so much for what you have created. We are done searching for the perfect snorkeling location, as we have now found it at Misool.

Hello Quickbeam Vancouver, What an incredible compliment for our team to hear you speak so highly of your visit to Misool! We are welcoming more and more snorkelers each year with the word spreading of the incredible biodiversity and abundant biomass that the Misool region has to offer; it’s wonderful to hear that you enjoyed your visit. All of our team members at Misool Resort and Misool Foundation feel a necessity to protect the 1,220 square kilometer Marine Protected Area that was created by our founders and the local community to ensure the health of the area for future generations. The protection of the area comes through various means, including the patrolling of the No Take Zone by our foundation’s ranger team, community-based recycling programs, and educational presentations for our guests during their stay. As you say, our guests tend to be conservation focused, but helpful tips of best reef conduct and discussing in detail the benefits of the Misool Marine Reserve guidelines helps to reinforce the importance of the protection of the area. We find ourselves incredibly fortunate to be a part of such an amazing staff, and Riko is no exception. Like many in our team, Riko has worn many hats during his years at Misool, devoting himself, most recently, as a snorkel and activities guide. He delights in taking guests out to discover the beauty of each snorkel site, pointing out birds and wildlife along the way. It was truly our pleasure to welcome you to Misool for a visit, Quickbeam Vancouver, and a big thanks to you as well. By visiting Misool, you are in turn supporting the protection of the Misool Marine Reserve and this incredible area. We are looking forward to seeing you again very soon!

We had our visit to Misool Resort delayed due to covid, but we were rescheduled promptly. We've read a lot about Misool and what was in store for us, but even our wildest expectations weren't enough! This is a most incredible place on earth. The diving is off the hook, the attention to detail and service to their guests is unparalleled. We felt "part of the family" during our entire 10 days. The food, the diving, the accommodations...I can't say enough about the work they do there.

I'm not sure what a previous posting was referring to when they talked about finding a better place for "serious divers", the Missol MPA is about as serious of a dive location as we've visited yet. Our group of Dive Masters all agreed the depth and breadth of the marine eco system and associated biodiversity is like almost no where else on the planet. The dive boats were comfortable and quick, the guides were helpful and knowledgeable.

It's quite a long trip to reach Misool, but it was most definitely worth every minute of flying, and every penny we paid for our visit. We've already re-booked for their next available opening.

Hi TonyHell, It was a long two years that Misool Resort, along with every other business nationwide, waited with anticipation to be able to welcome our booked international travellers back to visit. Our guests' perseverance in rebooking and waiting for the right moment to visit was incredibly appreciated by every single member of our team. And now we are lucky enough to be back and welcoming all of our scheduled guests and doing what we love best! It sounds like you really enjoyed your diving experience during your stay, which couldn't make our team happier. We always aim to showcase the full beauty of the area, along with the abundant biodiversity and biomass, while also taking our guests' and our dive guides' safety into consideration. It's really wonderful that these efforts were appreciated. TonyHell, we wish you all the best and we hope to welcome you back again soon!

Incredible service and venue. The resort is small and intimate. Only 14 cottages. They pay attention to detail from the time you inquire about the resort to the time you leave. They pick you up from the airport, the reservation at the hotel to boarding a very comfortable yacht to the resort itself. They bring your luggage to your cottage and yes, good orientation to the resort. The island is surrounded with a reef so you can literally snorkel from your cottage and that is what we did most of the time. Turtles, sharks, grouper, anchovies right by the pier. So is the octopus you can literally watch it trap its food standing by the dock. Food? You are never hungry. Pre diving/snorkelling snack, hot breakfast three hours later and lunch at noon. You get my point. I have never seen so many fish and variety of species…water so clear you think you are living im a dream. It is a trip of a life time. The con?… we had trouble with the internet….and yes, it is expensive and the wait for staying there is almost three years. But you get what you pay for. Comfortable bed, five gallon drinkable water and the cottages are spotless. We will be back

Myself and my wife spent 12 nights in Misool Resort as trip by Snorkel Venture: "Misool Snorkeling Safari". It took us very long travel time to reach the resort: 2 flights to Jakarta from USA and then 4 hours flight to Sorong and then 4 hours ride by boat. But, what we got at the resort: all that long travel time was WORTH IT to get to that unique place. US top snorkeling couple from "Snorkel Venture" considered this location as #1 snorkeling spot in the world, and this underwater area is beyond description: the world's vest botanical garden went underwater.
The cottages (north side) and the villas (south sides) are all very comfortable and well kept. The food in the restaurant is Indonesian type, but of very high quality. Food is available 5 times per day: that's a negative point for our stomaks.
Our group of 29 was divided into 3 smaller groups for 3 boats for snorkeling. Each group had 2 snorkeling sessions per day. For each snorkeling locations boats would go about 15 - 30 minutes. Then the snorkeling guides would check direction of the current and drop us from the points where we don't fight the current, but slowly drifting with the current and constantly seeing new areas.
What we saw underwater: hard and soft corals of many. many colors and really amazing fishes. Snorkeling guides would see and show us unique sea life that we would never find ourselves. Worth experience of our 12 days/nights there was our departure hour: we got used to every person working there and calling us by our first name every single time: in the restaurant and during snorkeling.
It's been 3 weeks since we arrived home, but we still miss the Misool Resort a lot!

My second time in Misool travelling with my partner through Bali (party central ) to the Polar opposite (thank goodness)! Misool is paradise in the Coral triangle. The diving is so good our expectations are not realistic when we are diving elsewhere. I saw my first Wobbegong shark this trip and it was not small. One early morning my partner and I saw a manta rolling over just over the reef from or water bungalow so we went for a dive off the house reef and found a Manta cruising around! Misool is a place to go and escape your everyday routine and eat healthy as the food is all sourced locally and you get to try some local treats, I recommend the Tempeh in satay sauce and the Granola and fresh fruit is devine. The staff are a tight knit family and many remembered us and we really enjoyed getting to know them a little better this time, nothing is a problem for them. It takes time to get there but that is what keeps it so pristine. Something special to me is how gorgeous and natural the resort is made by Indonesian craftsman it really makes you appreciate the natural beauty around you. Misool is an experience of a lifetime and I don't think there is anything quite like it anywhere else , thanks Carlo and the dive crew Mobula rays herding anchovies was another memorable dive. We left feeling healthier and like we had been at a 5 star health retreat. Note Indonesian laws are quite strict on alcohol (outside of Bali) you can't get hard spirits and wine is all imported, expensive and hard to source so a local beer is mostly what is available. If you want a drink at the end of the day good idea to take a bottle of spirits as they have some limited mixes if you want a night cap if you really feel the need, but we were happy with a beer or a glass of wine as we were diving this wasn't our focus. If you get the chance to go to Misool you will be one of only a few lucky enough to do so!

Simply breathtaking, the resort is located in Raja Ampat and is based on the site of and ex shark finning station. The owners have converted into a divers paradise and in the process enable a community to proactively petite the marine environment.

The accommodation is sensational givens is location and the team go out of their way to ensure you stay is as enjoyable as they possibly can.

The diving is simply indescribably, sharks manta and biodiversity like I have never seen before.

We took our 4 yo with us and she absolutely loved it.

I will be back as soon as they have a vacancy.

This review is late but my memories of Misool and the 10 days we spent there are still so strong. As I am recovering from foot surgery on my couch I love looking at the photos from our magical time in Misool. The staff, the diving, the food were all epic. An 8 min dive with an octopus on a ledge and the dives with oceanic mantas just blew my mind. The reefs are spectacular. Taking an Indonesian cooking class was so much fun. I bought the cookbook in the boutique and have a gaol to create a party this summer here in CO making several recipes from that cookbook to share my fond food memories from the resort. I heard about Misool from our local dive shop in Boulder CO. @Ocean First. They showed a movie of the preservation going on in the marine reserve there. And I immediately signed up in 2018 or 2019 for a trip in Oct 2020 which was rescheduled 4x. We finally made the trip happen in Jan 24 and it was worth the wait that Covid created. Thrilled to be there with some dear girlfriends but plan to take my family back when we can. This is my favorite place to dive and the island resort is absolutely magical. The sunset cruise was spectacular even if we did not have the best sunset that evening the snacks, drinks and people who went were so fun. I went with a girlfriend and we joked as all the other attendees were couples that we were a couple for the night. So many laughs, amazing diving. Staff that cares about the guest, land and marine preservation. So many places to visit in the world but this is one I will return to in a heart beat when time permits. Only disadvantage for me is the trek to get there, but that was part of the adventure. Thanks Misool for a bucket list adventure trip. Get a massage while there the staff has wonderful pressure and it is in a bungalow over the ocean or in your room. We were in a water cottage #5 which I loved being close to diving. Note: WIFI is weak on the island be sure to back up photo to your computer or iPad every day. I lost too many photos and dive info when like a fool I left my phone in a "dry bag" under the seat of our dive boat after a night dive. Since the staff had already moved the boat from the dock to a mooring I did not want to disturb them. I was thinking it would be secure but I had not rolled down the dry bag enough, too much moisture in the bag over night killed my iPhone. Indonesia is extremely humid, especially compared to the Rockies of CO. Keep your electronics safe. It was a ridiculous move on my part. Thankfully friends I made or went with had plenty of great photos to share & Misool Resort sent us photos of us for our memories of the great time we had.

Best diving in the world!! I’m an experienced diver, and this is a real gem. The food is amazing, the people are amazing, the diving is amazing, and their conservation efforts are incredible. BEST diving! The coral is the healthiest I have ever seen, and the fish are definitely the most abundant. After going there, no dive spot will ever be the same!
