Detailed Reviews
We were due to stay at the atrium suite at this lodge for 3 nights, however, due to cyclone Gabrielle, we were provided with accommodation for a further 2 nights.
After getting engaged on lonely bay beach, which is a secluded private beach a few minutes walk through the lodge gardens, we were kindly given the honeymoon suite in the estuary which was stunning.
The lodge keeper Anne, went above and beyond to make our stay special and keep us safe and spirits high during the terrifying cyclone.
We were given a lovely breakfast everyday, which was continental as well as cooked with fresh coffee.
The grounds are beautiful and well kept, and there are several beautiful walks nearby, as well as easy access to Whitinga, Hahei and Cooks Beach.
A perfect romantic getaway in the beautiful coromandel peninsula.

There is no doubt the extensive renovation and extension on this place make it a comfortable place to stay for the two nights we were there. That said, I am a little conflicted writing this review as it is not all it would seem. Firstly, they describe themselves as having four one bedroom suites and a two bedroom suite. In fact, they have four suites and a one bedroom suite. Maybe this is minor for some, but to us a one bedroom suite has a bedroom that can be closed off from the rest of the suite, which is why we chose it. The room was quite spacious, had an ensuite bathroom with a bath, but it wasn’t what we expected. There was no TV in our room, even though there was the space and the connections. There was one downstairs in the lounge that guests could use but it was pretty small. Again - maybe this is a minor issue for most but for us it was annoying. Understanding the lodge is a short walk to the beach and I imagine in summer guests will bring sand back, all the floors are wooden. Again, not a bad thing necessarily but it was very noisy as guests came back from a night out. The bed was a bit soft for our liking and the 2 pillows provided were, frankly, terrible. That said, it was a quiet location, the breakfast was good and the location was fine for exploring this part of the Coromandel Peninsula.

We had an amazing stay here. The photos don’t do justice to how pretty the property and house is.
The beach is less than a ten minute walk away but feels so secluded and private. There are a few walking tracks nearby so you can easily get to several different beaches within a couple minutes.
The breakfast each morning was delicious and we were offered virtually anything we wanted for breakfast.
The host was also super helpful and very nice, always happy to chat and answer any questions we had.
This is the perfect location for a romantic weekend away in a beautiful and secluded setting with easy access to some of the Coromandel’s best beaches.

Staying here was the perfect way to start a touring trip of NZ as it felt like having a mini holiday before the non-stop weeks ahead.
We were made to feel very welcome by Anne from the very beginning. She clearly takes pride in the accommodation which was immaculate whilst having a very homely and welcoming feel ....the addition of the luxury products, a welcoming bottle of wine and some cheese and crackers set the tone for the rest of the stay.
The gardens were beautifully maintained and had a little exit path which gave quick easy access to Cooks Beach, allowing for early morning beach walks, or turn the other way on the path and walk up to Shakespeare cliff lookout.
Can not recommend this property or the hostess Anne highly enough.

Stayed here with my family on a trip from USA to New Zealand. The Lonely Bay Lodge is one of a kind! The location is spectacular, just a few minutes walk from the beach with a great view from the Estuary suite (our room). The beds are comfortable, the patio is amazing. Breakfast is fantastic, catered by Anne (the lodge manager). There is a beautiful country garden that leads to a walk to either the amazing Shakespeare cliffs or down to Cooks Beach. The property is beautifully maintained, the lodge manager is fastidious and eager to help. It was great to hang out and get to know the other guests over breakfast. Would definitely come again and recommend to friends.

We were travelling as a group of 4 Canadians and Anne was an exceptional host. We arrived while the cyclone was hitting the area and Anne was able to guide us with things to do and places to eat as our arranged tours were cancelled. Anne cooked us delicious breakfasts every morning and we were very comfortable relaxing in front of the fireplace. As a tour guide herself she was full of information on sites to see while touring New Zealand. We highly recommend staying at the Lonely Bay with Anne!

+1
Ann was a perfect host making this a five star accommodation! The gardens, with the smell of jasmine in the air and symphony of bird songs, location to beaches, great restaurants and the design, comfort and amenities added to the experience. Ann went above and beyond creating yummy breakfasts, greeting us upon our excursion returns to make excellent dinner recommendations and reservations and providing lively conversation! Highly recommend this lodge! Bonus surprise elevator to take our luggage up and down stairs was a huge help and smart design!

We stayed four nights at The Barn. A luxurious holiday home with all modern conveniences, decorated and furnished to a very high standard. On arrival we found breakfast provisions provided, some soft drinks, crackers and cheese. The owner is a short text away and very helpful in answering any queries, even offering to have a corkscrew delivered when I couldn’t find one. Recommended!

Visiting 970 is like immersing into Manderley without any of the drama of Mrs de Winter. Our host Anne could not be further from the Rebecca protagonist as she is helpful, knowledgable of the whole area and provides a relaxed yet welcoming environment. The property is well appointed with great views of the estuary and all the little touches of luxury make this a great place to stay. Convenient for the ferry, local restaurants and provided a super walk to take in the vista of Cooks Bay with Shakespeare’s point.

Our family of four stayed four marvelous nights at 970 Lonely Bay Lodge at the end of 2022 and it was our favorite lodge of the three weeks we spent in New Zealand. Anne was our host and she did everything to perfection. Breakfast was spot-on every day and since we had four of the five rooms, we almost had the run of the place. Despite being somewhat the oddballs (we hung around the house a lot more than most guests, I think) Anne was able to roll with our idiosyncrasies. Though the Coromandel has a lot to offer, Lonely Bay was so nice we were happy to laze away in the comfort we found there. We also had the pleasure of meeting Jane, the owner, who is a treasure to converse with. Don't pass this one by.
