Nestled in a picturesque setting, the Redcastle Oceanfront Golf & Spa Hotel is celebrated for its serene atmosphere and stunning views. While some areas could benefit from modernization, the spa is lauded for its tranquility and professionalism. Although the value proposition receives mixed reviews, with some concerns over cost, many guests find the pricing reasonable. The hotel's cleanliness and diligent staff contribute significantly to the positive experience, even as some suggest room maintenance could improve. The hotel's prime location remains a consistent highlight for visitors.

Overall, a nice relaxing break in a hotel with very friendly, professional staff. Our suite room had a great sea view and a large comfy bed. But the amenities were generally poor with just those attached to the wall soap and shower gel dispensers. The room information booklet stated that the room temperature could be altered by using the valves on the radiators . However the radiators were off yet the room was stifingly hot resulting in the windows being g left open to try to cool the room down. So i have no idea how the room could be cooled ,

Food at the restaurant and bar was very good, with the bar pizza deal particularly great value . Although we found the dining areas very bright and a bit old fashioned .

The Spa treatments and leisure area were top notch with a lovely pool although the compulsory wearing of swim hats is plain weird in my opinion.

When our room was made up, the result was the most disappointing i’ve come across . Some towels were folded and replaced , others were left hanging on doors. One glass was washed up, another was left on a bedside table. But the bed was not made and was left in a mess .

We had booked an overnight stay with meal on Sunday 2nd June. Reception staff were amazing, and a special mention for Ruth (I think) who checked us in. When we went to our room, a sea view suite, we were a tiny bit disappointed hence the 3 stars given. The room itself was massive with a extra large king-size bed with a sea view albeit over a somewhat ugly flat roof. I appreciate this may appear an overly picky comment but the view was something we paid extra for. The bathroom just needs a refresh, the floor tiles were loose, the bath had a large dent in it, the shower just a bit outdated. Again this may appear very picky but the rooms are not cheap. Our evening meal was quite simply amazing and the staff could not be more helpful, again a special shout to Dermot who served us, he was knowledgeable and attentive with a bit of banter. The same can be said for breakfast - quite simply amazing.
The thing that really let the hotel down and which means we won't return, despite the amazing food, was one of the bar tenders in the Captain's bar. After our meal, we went to the bar, where live music was playing, for a cocktail. The staff who served us were lovely, so this review shouldn't be taken to apply to all staff there. Before going to our room at night, we asked for ice for our room, the bar tender who wasn't wearing a name badge, initially refused, saying he didn't have any ice despite it clearly being visible, he then said he couldn't give out ice, and finally said, we'd already had enough ice. He was quite simply rude and other customers clearly overheard what he said and how he said it. Whilst he eventually did apologise for how he spoke us, the whole thing put a bit of a damper on what was a lovely evening and which unfortunately means we won't be returning which is such a shame.

We decided to switch things up this year and go out for Christmas dinner, which we haven’t done in about 20 years - Redcastle was one of the few venues doing dinner and the banquet menu looked promising, although what we didn’t realise at the time of booking was that the entire dinner was basically a self serve buffet/carvery with only drinks being a table service element.

The venue is beautiful - dinner was held in their Ocean Suite which has lovely views across the bay. Staff were generally lovely and polite and we appreciate they were giving up Christmas Day with their families to be there.

The cost per person was not cheap - €129pp for adults and €69pp for children under 12. That was their first mistake, given we know how little very young children eat. I would have expected a much lower price for babies/children under 5. But I can also appreciate the overheads that must come with running a Christmas Day dinner (not withstanding the lack of table service).

The food was just ok. Some of the items that looked beautiful laid out on the buffet were actually quite bland/lacking in flavour, or quite unbalanced. For example, the potato salad was very vinegary, and the banoffee pie had far too much of the toffee sauce and very little else, which made it heavy and claggy. The dessert table had so many other options so you could have changed your mind if you didn’t like something.

Some of the other guests said the prawn cocktail was lovely, and we all agreed The turkey at the carvery was delicious , but the gravy lacked flavour. The Yorkshire puddings were left to the side cold and had a bit of a funny taste.

The self serve element made everything feel very hectic and rushed, especially when the tables started to fill up. We had an early sitting at 12 but by 2pm the dining room was practically full. None of it really felt enjoyable or relaxing. Tables were available for 2.5 max which was ample but again, it was made obvious by the waiting staff that they just had a carousel of sittings and you needed to eat and get out asap so they could turn it around for the next sitting.

It also felt very wasteful - lots of things there that wouldn’t have appealed to many people and let’s be honest, it was just far too much food to get through in a 2 hour sitting.

It was our view that it would have been much better to just have had the main as a carvery, with perhaps table service of the starter and dessert.

What would have made things feel a bit more special for the occasion (and justified the price) would have been to have had just 3 or 4 courses with full table service. It would have had a much better feel all round instead of people up and walking around for all the stations and bumping into each other etc etc.

Overall, it was quite average and I’m not sure we’d go back for the same next year unless they changed things around, but it was very nice to not have to worry about all the cooking and cleaning up!

Really hope they are able to rethink their offering.

Dear guest, Thank you for taking the time to post a review following your Christmas Day Banquet Lunch at Redcastle Hotel. Thank you for your kind words about our staff here in the hotel, we are very lucky to have a wonderful team and are so appreciative that they do give up their time on these occasions. Our Christmas Day Banquet Lunch is a buffet service for each course which is an aspect that the majority of our guests enjoy and love being able to help themselves to as much of each course as they like, although we appreciate that this may not be for everyone. We do offer a plated Sunday Lunch throughout the year which may be more suited to your preferences. Thank you for your feedback regarding the food itself, this is certainly something that I will pass on to our Executive Head Chef. We hope you had a lovely Christmas and we hope to welcome you back to Redcastle Hotel in future. Best wishes to you and yours for 2025. Kind Regards, Redcastle Customer Care Team

Stayed at Red castle for three nights, hotel is in need of a major upgrade, definitely not four star. Hotel outside in need of painting, internal doors not clean at hand contact point. We stayed in room 406 good views but window very stiff and not clean, bath side panel swollen and peeling also silver fish (insect) running around bathroom floor at night. Staff very helpful but totally inexperienced, shown to table for breakfast got our tea/ coffee went to get breakfast and on return table had been cleared. Quality of breakfast products very poor. Booked dinner in the restaurant for one evening but it's where breakfast is served only you get a table cloth with dinner, overall disappointing would not stay here again.

We were attending a wedding. On arrival there was a drink reception offering room temperature beer, so I went to the bar to buy a beer. I had to explain that the beer in the reception was warm and was told the wedding couple had requested this. I waited 30 minutes and left the bar without a drink (all the staff were bringing ice to the drinks reception to chill the drinks. Staff were very friendly but unfortunately food was poor (overcooked veg and dry meat). From the outside seating area you could see rubbish on the beach and old furniture which had been thrown under the hotel. The entire place needs decoration. This was clearly once a stunning hotel but has fallen on hard times, however, the price’s do not reflect this. We had a really good time at this wedding, luckily we stayed at an AirBnB nearby which was amazing, the area is stunning and we had sunshine, so the perfect spot to get married, but if I had paid €350 a night to sleep there (rather than €250 for the weekend) I would have been very unhappy (I stayed at Dromoland Castle earlier this year and that was €600 a night, but it was luxurious and worth the money, so the cost is not the issue, rather the cost/experience ratio).

Just returned from 2 nights away at the beautiful Redcastle Hotel. Everything was perfect!! The staff are so welcoming and friendly, the food (breakfast and dinner) were absolutely delicious. The pool and grounds were fabulous. The hotel room itself was spotless and had everything we needed, and we were surprised with a beautiful seaview room for our wedding countdown/birthday celebrations. What a beautiful part of Ireland with lots of exploring to do. We can't wait to return. Thank you again for making our stay so memorable.

We arrived much earlier than the 3 o'clock check in time but the receptionist asked us to wait a few minutes so that she could make sure that the room was ready for us. The porter got us and our luggage to our room number 406. The room was exactly as pictured and described on the hotels website. Recently decorated and spotlessly clean. Complimentary water, tea and coffee, a coffee machine, dressing gowns, iron and ironing table, hair dryer, however, NO SAFE. Comfortable seating area overlooking the sea view. The room was comfortably warm throughout our stay but temperature could be controlled by occupants by way of a radiator tap. Bathroom, small but well designed with bath and over shower, simple to use, great selection of towels.

We had booked a four night Christmas break and although the entertainment was part of the package it was the food that drew us to the festive visit. There was a welcome email on our tablet, but it lacked any itinerary for the entertainment. We had to enquire at reception if we needed to discover events for the day.

Breakfast each day was standard buffet, but with lots and lots of choice. First night we chose table d'hote in Edge Restaurant, enjoyable experience and food. Second night we chose bar food which was equally enjoyable. Christmas day lunch was described as six course carvery. I can only describe it as a fabulous experience which we loved and remember. The atmosphere created by tables of families and friends added to our own enjoyment of the occasion. Thanks should go to chefs and the young men and women giving up their Christmas to work together to serve us in order to make our Christmas very special.

In any hotel, these days, guests should not be subjected to a dog running around bar areas , stopping and sniffing at shoes and legs. The animal in question at the Redcastle Hotels was generally off the lead and allowed to roam freely, sometimes when it's owners were nowhere to be seen. When I asked the receptionist whether the hotel took booking with dogs she said NO and that the dog in question was a "therapy dog". Guide dogs and and some assistance dogs receive years of training and never leave their owners side. Therapy dogs or, to give them their correct title of "emotional support animals" have no formal training and have no legal rights to enter any public buildings such as hotels. In other words no different to any other dog. I therefore view this as the Redcastle Hotel allows guest to bring dogs. I will therefore not be returning to your hotel or recommending your hotel in future due to the "dogs are welcome " policy.

Dear Robbie, Thank you for taking the time to write this review following your recent stay. I am delighted to read you enjoyed your bedrooms facilities. We are very proud to show off our newly refurbished bedrooms. Thank you for your kind words towards our staff and our food. I will certainly pass your comments back to the team. I have checked with our reception team, and they had a list of festive activities in the welcome packs given to each guest at check in and there was also a sign at our reception desk with them listed. Here at The Redcastle Hotel we do have a no dog policy unless it is a guide dog, I will certainly investigate this further with the team. I arrived home yesterday after a spending a night at the Redcastle Hotel with my daughter as a birthday celebration. It is my favourite hotel and I would visit regularly with other family members. This time was honestly the best experience I have had and it was all down to the treatment as recieved in the spa and leasure area. Margaret at the reception was brilliant, such a fun easy to chat to lady, very professional, and informative. She could not have done enough for us. My treatment was a neck, back and shoulder massage. Eva the lovely masseuse who took me was the best massage I've had in my life and I've had quite a few. For the first time ever I slept during it, she used the perfect pressure, she was calm, friendly, professional and extreamy good at her job! Ehen I go back I will be asking to book in with her again. Saying she was 5* is just not praise enough. My daughter had her first massage experience with another lovely girl named Christina, she couldn't put into words how amazing she was. She has requested we go back as her Christmas present even if it's just for the massages. There was also a beautiful selection of tea's with home made shortbread and plenty of water offered before and after our treatments. We will definitely be back and will be requesting Eva and Christina.
Such an amazing team in the spa and leasure area!

Our room was spotless, beds extremely comfortable, tv easy to connect to and use, quiet, robes and slippers provided, plenty of towels and fluffy pillows. I just love this hotel!

Over the years, my partner and I used to really enjoy staying at Red Castle quite a lot, we just loved it and always recommended it to friends and family whenever we could- The food, rooms and atmosphere were always great…We even made the decision to book our wedding there for 2021, it made sense since we were always visiting.

After only a few months after booking our wedding, my father became terminally ill, I also became redundant over the covid period, this was all very sudden and out of our control. We had to make the very difficult choice and cancel our wedding plans, it just broke us.

We explained our very difficult and stressful situation to management, and pleaded with them to please consider refunding some of the deposit(1500), we were in a very bad place…to our shock and dismay they showed no empathy, care or sympathy to our circumstances, they kept our entire deposit and refused to compromise with any kind of compensation or transfer any of our money towards a complimentary stay. We decided to cut our losses, and to take a break from RC as we felt like we had been totally let down and didn’t feel the same way towards the place.

Fast forward to today, we were in the area with our young children and very far from home… we desperately needed a place stay and Red Castle was the only place available at such short notice, so we reluctantly booked a night in one of the family rooms.

We couldn’t get over how extremely run down the hotel has become since we last visited. Our room was filthy, our bathroom absolutely stank, the food was embarrassingly over priced and very poor quality(we had to return the children’s food back to the kitchen)the restaurant toilets were in an appalling state. The breakfast was disgusting, it was as if the food had been cooked on a radiator.

Our children went to the pool and the staff were very unhelpful and rude- we couldn’t believe it. We were treated as if we just wandered confusingly off the street in the wrong building.

The next morning my son was feeling unwell, we asked if we could have a later check out so he could rest before our long trip home… this, they would not allow as apparently they had “A full house” even though their website clearly showed plenty of availability (including the room we were staying in). When confronted about this, the reception staff just shrugged it off and said that’s what their manager told them make up.

I’ve attached just some of the photos from our stay, the rest are just embarrassing. It’s safe to say that our Red Castle days are well and truly behind us, clearly they don’t put good customer service as priority, just your money. The place is obviously in decline as the hotel/restaurant were dead.

The only good thing is the lovely sea views and good parking. We will never return no matter how desperate we are!

Dear Guest, Many thanks for taking the time to write a review following your recent stay with us at Redcastle Oceanfront Golf & Spa Hotel. I am very sorry to read about your very unfortunate personal situation, this must have been an extremely difficult time. With regards refunding wedding deposits, unfortunately the wedding deposits are non refundable or transferable. I appreciate your particular situation was very difficult. I am sorry to read you did not enjoy your dining experience. We usually receive such wonderful reviews regarding our food and service which can be seen on the many positive reviews on this platform alone. The Edge Restaurant has won multiple awards for their high quality of food and service. For breakfast, we offer a wide range of pastries, fruit smoothies, fresh fruit salads, cereals and cold meals along with the hot buffet options. The spacious rooms were refurbished in 2022, with new décor, carpets, curtains, furniture, bedding, artwork and technology including smart TV and coffee machine. I am sorry to read you found the rooms basic. There are various room types to choose from including Oceanview, balcony rooms, bedroom suites and superior suite rooms. Our toilets are cleaned every hour, at a minimum, throughout the day by our ground floor cleaning team. I am very sorry that the toilets were not in the usual standard of cleanliness that we pride ourselves in. The availability for family rooms can depend on the ages of the children in the room/the sleeping arrangements available. The reception team would have been able to advise if the room you could see on the website was suitable for your particular family requirements. We certainly hope to welcome you back to the hotel again in the near future. Kind Regards, Redcastle Customer Care Team

My girlfriend booked Redcastle hotel and spa for my surprise 40th birthday. It was a hard decisions there are many venues to choose from from dog friend b&bs to venues with spas. in the end she chose redcastle purely for the spa weekend it cost E288 which is top end for 1 night in winter Friday 15 Nov. On arrival we were greeted by reception who welcomed us very friendly and said about the use of the facilities. when we checked in we couldn't wait to get down as it was 3.30 and dinner wasn't until 7. when we went down we were told that it was down due to general maintenance. this was very frustrating as after the long drive were definitely wanted to relax. we asked when it would be open and the girl replied probably Sunday. We went back to the room and watched tv just waiting for dinner time obviously disappointed. dinner was lovely 3 courses and some good entertained on afterwards in the captains bar. the next day we tried the spa again after checkout and again unfortunately it was closed due to the general maintenance. the plan was always to use the facilities until the afternoon then get a dinner before the head home so obviously this made us leave the venue at 11am. when we got back home my girlfriend wrote a letter of complaint just to say how disappointed she was. the response was pathetic simply if you book again well look after you better. I understand that things can break down and be unforeseen. this has happened before in the past but i was offered a free spa day in that venue none of that was on the table. why would i spend another 288 euro for 1 night only to be subjected to " well look after them this time" attitude. very disappointing and i doubt il ever go back to redcastle b&b.

I think so but we were out and about most of the time so didn’t watch much TV. Why not just phone the hotel - you get to speak to real people and they’re very helpful.

We stayed in the Redcastle Hotel last month and booked a Balcony Room. I phoned the hotel and was told that all balcony rooms had a sea view. Our balcony room was on the first floor and was gorgeous. Spacious and overlooking Lough Foyle.

We dont drink beer but found their bar prices are reasonable for a hotel. Really great place. We have stayed there several times. The last time being February.
