Nestled in a tranquil, scenic locale, Maruia Hot Springs is celebrated by many travelers for its serene setting conducive to relaxation and outdoor pursuits, albeit some find it a bit isolated. While the comfort and amenities like heated floors in the rooms earn praise, there's a sentiment that updates and certain essentials are lacking.
The hotel's cleanliness and inclusive amenities such as hot springs are highlights, yet the value proposition is questioned, with guests pointing to additional costs. Service quality is mixed, with commendations for the staff's friendliness tempered by concerns over occasional inefficiencies.

Hotel's Favourite
We came home from Perth for Xmas and treated ourselves to the 1 night indulge package and kicked myself when I hesitated booking 2 nights if not more if time allowed. We simply had a wonderful time and left sad that it ended but feeling relaxed, re-vibed and reflective. The pools are a part of the place but the layout, staff, location and scenery just make it that much wow and wonderful. We did the Sauna infusion in the afternoon and I did a second the following morning and am now a fan, to the point of looking at a sauna and installing a cold shower in the back when we get home lol. The meals were delicious, healthy and well portioned, along with the natural drinks as well as wines etc. The king room was awesome and a view just breath taking, with a deck to take it all in, and a great bathroom with nice lighting, personal robes etc, blockout curtains and a bed that makes the whole experience a bliss. Special mention to Char for preparing the room but also Max who was a legend outside and in the place and a great ambassador to what the place is achieving, our only gripe would be to have time for the place to be adults only, but this did not dampen our experience and commitment to return whenever we come back home, do yourself, mind and body a favour and checkin to check out

An overnight stay here was the perfect antidote to a series of tramping trips. From the warm welcome by the receptionist, through several dips in the therapy pools to the outstanding dinner cooked by chef Tom, everything exceeded our expectations! We must commend Tom especially for the imaginative fresh salads with edible flowers, vegetables, side dishes and desserts all exquisitely presented. We felt pampered and intend to return from our home in Nelson in the near future.

I have heard about this place for years and our wedding anniversary was the perfect excuse to book our first time. Here is a rundown of what we found:
Room:
We checked into a Family room which was quite small but clean with comfortable beds and lots of fresh towels and robes. There are tea/coffee making facilities and no TV which we enjoyed. We were on the ground floor and unfortunately could hear every footstep and door opening/closing upstairs which was quite jarring. But we overall slept comfortably. The water from the tap is absolutely delicious and I felt invigorated and refreshed just from drinking the water.
Pools:
The outdoor pools are absolutely stunning with a beautiful entry area that is impeccably clean and well-appointed with showers and heated floor dressing room. We were lucky enough to have it snow and to sit in the pools with gorgeous mountains so close by covered in white was something I won't forget. The indoor pool was a little funkier but I loved the view outside the large window.
Restaurant:
This is why I haven't given 5 stars as the food here is a bit hit and miss, which given the pricing, should have been better. I admire what they are trying to do here but the execution was inconsistent. Some dishes such as the steak were spot-on, others were either lacking in flavour (bone broth) or overly seasoned with spices (dumplings) Very small portions. The Kid's Menu was not particularly child friendly with flavours that probably wouldn't find favour with many kids. Our daughter ate our steaks instead. Deserts were once again ambitious but a caramel tart was too sweet and the apple crisp was too dry and sweet with nothing to balance this out. The cheese plate was better. Breakfasts were very good. The Kids Sweet Tooth Pancakes my hubby and I thought were scrumptious
Staff:
Overall friendly and pleasant, which given how busy it was when we were there is a credit to them. Sometimes it seemed a bit inattentive in the restaurant but overall the staff were lovely.
Overall:
I definitely think worth a repeat visit. It feels like a work in progress with the feeling that they are trying to make things better which is a credit to them. You do pay top dollar for the experience however so I look forward to things getter more refined with the next visit.

Thank you so much for your review. Sorry you found the dining experience hit & miss, I have feedback about the kids menu which we are in the process of updating. We have just changed our menu to our new spring/summer menu which you will have to come and try! It was great you were able to experience the springs in snow- as it only happens a few times a year! We have lots of exciting updates and renovations coming up and we can't wait to share them with you soon.

Due to it being Valentine’s weekend we thought we would treat ourselves to something nice. Arrived at the springs to a lovely receptionist who was very friendly and gave us lots of info and let us check in two hours early.
We had booked a deluxe room expecting something special, it was nice (plenty of towels, clean sheets, robes, fridge) but I wouldn’t describe it as deluxe as such. There was also a broken beer bottle next to our balcony which is not exactly nice when you have payed quite a bit for the room.
Went and tried the hot pools which were great and in a very beautiful setting, also access to the river near by. Sand flies everywhere but spray provided, and we understand that the climate means it can’t be helped so we were ok with that! Plunge pool great!
We booked in for dinner at the “fine dining al a carte” restaurant, and we were very disappointed. We ordered the quail for $41, and I would have to say it was average at the most, would definitely not describe it as a main meal. We had pre ordered desserts but we cancelled these due to not wanting to spend good money on average food. The waitress didn’t ask if we enjoyed our food and didn’t ask us if we needed drinks once.
We felt the menu would be better to focus more on hearty meals rather than attempting fine dining.
Payed at the reception for the meal and then felt I wanted to explain my experience to the male receptionist for some feedback. He made zero eye contact with me when apologising, this didn’t feel sincere and I felt let down by this.
Me and my partner don’t regularly spend money on expensive food but have dined in all kinds of restaurants all around the world and are very aware of what good service entails and what fine dining is. We wanted to have a nice meal and experience for valentine’s day and the integrity and care just wasn’t there. The waiter offered me two free coffees for the morning which I declined due to feeling like we were being fobbed off.
After this we used the pools again at night, which was amazing and beautiful with the stars and atmosphere. We had a restful nights sleep.
The property looks tired and not the cleanest in places which is a shame because the overall property is amazing and has so much potential.
We heard staff a few times talking amongst each other about issues in the work place, we do not want to hear about that - not ideal for a wellness retreat. We don’t blame the frontline staff for this as there was no management presence.
To end, we as a couple enjoyed our time in the beautiful Lewis Pass but it was dampened by these aspects, hopefully you’ll take my comments into consideration.

Hi Lydia, thank you for your feedback - as we are always trying to improve our facilities as well as our service, we do highly appreciate constructive feedback. We are gutted to hear that you did not enjoy your Deluxe room - our room prices are reflective of the bathing and also staying - therefore we think the price is reasonable. We are very delighted to hear that you enjoyed the bathing facilities, especially our plunge pool. As all of our produce is sourced organically and locally and everything is homemade from scratch, we do definitely think that the price for our dining experience is reasonable - sorry to hear that you did not enjoy it. We definitely cannot agree with you that a health and wellness resort should be serving hearty meals - that is totally against our ethos as we want to serve healthy meals - we are not a pub I am afraid. As we are always trying to improve our facilities and also service, we will take the constructive comments into consideration, thank you!

+1
We booked a deluxe room for a couple and one kid and arrived at 2pm.
Just to start, the receptionist wasn't very helpful, she seemed to be busy, not really knowing what was she doing and struggling to give right information to the guests.
The room was avarange, nothing deluxe, just like any 3 start hostel we were expecting so much more for the price we paid for just one night, however the views were very nice.
Second thing that happened: I found a long blonde hair in between the towels -seems they do not really change all the towels when someone checks out. Anyway, we let it pass and went to the outdoors hot springs but I highly recommend to bring repelent.. i got bitten 40 times (wich basically ruined the rest of my holidays) by sand flyes in the hour we spent there, its better to get a bath in the indoors pools. no mosquito bites there!
Third thing: We had a table booked for dinner and we wanted to order a platter and pizzas from the cafeteria but we had to have dinner in the cafeteria because the waitress told us we can not have the cafe menu (the pizzas) in the restaurant but we CAN have the restaurant menu in the cafeteria... isn't it the same thing??? anyway, we ordered pizzas and had to wait around 45 minutes to be served being the place almost empty, our daughter was so ungry that we had to entertain her playing monopoly. I have to say that the pizza was delicious, stunning! but looong wait.
we stay the night only and I understand the qality of the room because we are in the middle of nowere but we were wondering why it costed so much and just when paying the bills the waitress (who was now the receptionist) said that the spa and wellness experience (yoga, etc) was included and was ment to start at 3pm (just after we arrived) but the receptionist told us was an OPTIONAL thing and we understood that we had to pay more for the service if we wanted it so decided not to do it, this was wrong so we missed it coz we were leaving at 10am the day after.
there is a room full of table games and sits wich is very helpful but was not well looked after unfertunatelly.
what I have to say is that the waitress at the main restaurant was very kind and lovely, smiley and have eye on detail. congratulations for that, however the lack of information and the lack of staff made the experience poor.

Hi there, sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay at Maruia Hot Springs. We do appreciate your feedback, we are constantly trying to improve our customer service. We would like to provide some context to some of your points: The price for the accommodation is definitely reasonable as it gives you admission to 3 outdoor hot pools, 1 indoor hot pools, 1 sauna, 1 steam room, 1 infrared sauna, a plunge pool and the complimentary guided bathing experience for 2 days and 1 night. The price we charge for accommodation is not only reflective of the quality of the room, but also the full experience of all the bathing facilities we do offer. Our housekeeping team changes all the linen, towels and everything when people do check out - our laundry comes from an outside agency - so the hair may have come during the laundry process. As we are a destination on the West Coast we do have sand flies, but we do provide complimentary sand fly repellent at the hot pools in front of the steam room - this information is always given at check in. At night time there are also no sand flies around and night bathing is truly amazing with the stars. Our restaurant offers a fine dining a la carte menu, therefore we do not serve pizzas in our restaurant. It also not true that you can order from the restaurant menu in the cafe, you can only have 2 items out of our starter menu in the cafe - so this is different from what you have said. Pizzas usually do take 10-15 minutes unless it is a really busy night - but we never experience a wait longer that 25-30 minutes for a pizza. The games provided at the lounge do get stolen or also destroyed by people regularly and we exchange them almost every three months due to that reason. Thank you for your feedback.

I rarely write reviews but in the light of our disppointing experience I felt I should put something in writing.
The trip to Maruia Springs was to be a highlight on our campervan road trip around South Island. Sadly we were quite disappointed. Although we had a good reception on arrival and a very enjoyable 'bathing journey' with Tara and enjoyed the thermal pools we found the rest of the experience rather disappointing.
A management presence was sadly lacking with poorly trained receptionists doubling up as bar/waiting staff. We ate in the cafeteria area which was acceptable but considering this is a wellness resort, and that we were sitting in the chill out lounge, we found the the bar person had a loud and penetrating voice all evening!
The next morning we decided to revisit the pools and sauna area around 8.30am only to find the cleaner at work and had to wait 10+ minutes to use the shower. Surely the cleaning should be done before the clients are invited to use the facilities i.e from 8am (according to our booking confirmation)
On check out we had an issue with a couple of items on our bill which unfortunately the receptionist was unable to reconcile. She had to call another member of staff who was frankly quite rude both to myself and his colleague who was trying to help me.
Maruia Springs - you have a fabulous resource but you need to get your act together if you want to be able to provide the exclusive and magical experience that your clients will expect and not waste the amazing potential.

Hi there, we are happy that you enjoyed your bathing journey with Tara and our bathing facilities - Tara was very delighted to hear that you enjoyed that. Sorry to hear that you felt like there was poorly trained staff at our facilities - we do take great pride in our staff and can definitely not agree with you on that - as we are a resort in the middle of nowhere and guest numbers are always fluctuating - sometimes people need to help out in our cafe or restaurant. Our facilities need to be cleaned every single day - our cleaning team starts at 6 am to clean pools and then starts cleaning all the changing rooms, rooms etc. - our clients are allowed to use the bathing facilities from the time they check in, all day long, all night long and also until 9pm on check out day - this is explained at check in - unfortunately you will sometimes do encounter our cleaning team around as we do want our facilities to be clean and up to standard. Thank you for your feedback.

On a trip back from down south we decided to stay a night and so the couples package. It was amazing ! We arrived at 3pm, after being shown our room we used the pools, 3 pools plenty of space, sauna and steam room and plunge pool in same area, showers and changing room as u walk thru. Included was a pool experience for two a private pool... incredible met with a ice bucket and wine and chocolates. Dinner included 5 courses, really 4 courses as one was a palette clean cleanser, 3-4 choices for each course, lovely dining and exceptional service, pools are open 24/7 so back to them after dinner, magical in the dark and rain. No tv’s in bedroom so take a book-divine!
Next morning breakfast included, back to pools and a guided nature walk, sauna immersion, left about 12pm but can stay up to 9 pm on the second day. I’ve rebooked first a girls weekend in September :) could’ve been anyone overseas but yet only 3 hrs from Nelson. The package was $498 💗

From the outset making a booking was difficult. Got the first one booked by phone only to receive a call to say the room I booked had been booked online, Tried a 2nd time to be told it would be a glamping pod not room, then on the day we were upgraded to a room.
On arrival we struggled to understand the receptionist (being covid - wearing masks and the receptionist speaking a different dialect of Kiwi than us didn't help).
Come dinner time same language barrier encountered and had to get the waitress to repeat things, she informed us that the desert we wanted wasn't available hmm no biggie however, when it came desert time miraculously the desert turned up (personally I think the cleaning staff snuck in to have a shot at waitressing - failed).
No TV's in the rooms, the jug is small enough to fill one & a half of the coffee cups. Disappointing that the overheads on this business are greatly reduced by providing their own power & water yet the fees are still market value and you still have to use shared shampoo/conditioner/shower gel from a bottle - very cheap (if not dangerous) approach :(
Sorry can't and wouldn't recommend nor would we return.
Thank you.

Hello Neil, Sorry for the confusion with the booking. It is easier to book in advanced on our website to avoid disappointment but booking requests can be sent via email, we always do our best to accomodate hence the upgrade on arrival :) We do have non native speakers with us however they are all fluent in english. We were training a new member on the evening when you had your meal but the desert issue was resolved right away. Our superior rooms do come with a TV and extra coffee making facilities! Unfortunately we did not live up to your expectations.

Beaut weather, pools great to relax, loved the circular forest walk, but not a great fan of the natural black algae in the p[ools, the prolific sandflies and bumble bees in the area.Camping option felt reasonable price but otherwise you needed a fat wallet. Short staffed, though the internationals around couldn't have been more helpful. Shame they have closed down the cafe to passers by on the long stretch of road from Hanmer to Springs Jct, but maybe that's due to economics. Would encourage the owner to develop power sites for the camping ground and more facilities for rubbish, recycling etc

Thank you for your review- we are happy you enjoyed our onsite nature walk and also found the staff very helpful- Our pools are completely natural and untreated so it is impossible for us to get rid of the algae, however the natural black algae in our pools is filled with lots of healthy mineral and is very good for your skin. As for the sand flies and Bees unfortunately we cannot get rid of these, but we do have homemade sand fly repellent next to the pools. I will certainly pass the feedback on to the owners about the facilities for rubbish in the campsite :)

The main attraction is the hot pools, and a nice experience. But the rest is below average. Always long waiting at the front desk, the room is really basic (paid NZD 295), no data signal and wifi is expensive, paid $65 for a set dinner meal, and had a fish that tasted frozen. Partner had a chicken dish, and the meat was dried. Be aware you need a locker key for storage when using the hot pools, and the location is about 100m down a stair of steps. The management could have advised their guest of this, and we were caught out. There is just one trail nearby, a nice 40 min walk along the river. There should be more short trails for something to do!

Thank you for your feedback, we are glad you enjoyed our natural hot springs. We do have limited staff that can only handle so many guests/ day bathers or pop in curious visitors, this can cause a line at peak periods at reception and we thank you for your understanding on this as we do try to move things along as best we can. We are sorry you did not enjoy your dinner we would have tried to sort that out during your stay. We do provide locker keys for guests that need them if asked but we simply do not have enough to provide every guest as we hire them to day bather visitors that do not have rooms to store anything in. We do have all trails and walks listed nearby in our room compendiums however we cannot go ahead and cut any more trails off our property as this is all DOC land. We do offer a variety of wellness activities that 95% of our guests really enjoy and you will not find anywhere else, these activities are something else guests can do. We are located in an area with no reception however do have WIFI for guests if needed. As this is provided via satellite we do have to charge for this. Thank you,

A high chance in Winter,. It’s located high up on the Lewis Pass, a partial mountainous main road, east to west coast and the pass is closed numerous times throughout winter, timing is the key though being snowed in at the Springs would not be a bad thing. The experience of being in a hot spring when it is snowing is surreal be it cold we getting out lol, the alternative is at Hanmer Springs located lower down on the east side of the Lewis pass that also has hot springs
Yea the have private pools booking is required
Sandflies at this time of year are a given. Good repellent is a must. It is a great place though! Enjoy!
You need to contact them. We didn’t camp at all.
Hi there,
it is totally depending on what you are having. We do offer homemade cookies, muffins, savoury scones, raw vegan options for around $5-8.
Our lunch options start at around $16 and we do offer pizzas starting around $20.
We do have a fridge and a water kettle in all the rooms and we do offer complimentary coffee and tea.
