Detailed Reviews
We were cycling through Omakau and needed a place for dinner. We googled what was around to make sure there were vego options. We found Blacks Hotel which promised a new vego menu, a 6min cycle or 20min stroll away. We emailed to book a table (generally a must) which was super handy as we didn’t have local mobile coverage. We got a prompt email confirmation.
We walked and it was an easy pleasant stroll. It was also easy find from the road. The bar was very cosy and welcoming and the restaurant was quaint and charming. The menu had a great range of vego and non-vego options. We both chose vego options (Asian dumplings and Greek salad). Both meals were fresh and delicious and very reasonably priced. The atmosphere was very friendly and inviting.
The service from Jazmin was prompt and friendly. She was generous with her time and guidance on the menu.
We decided to share a brownie for dessert. It was rich and delicious and comfortably shared between us.
We very much enjoyed Blacks Hotel’s hospitality. They even offered us a lift home!

We got a lovely warm welcome in Blacks Hotel in the back of beyond in Otago NZ. Quaint, cosy, open fire, great food and such great hosts. Nothing was too much for the hosts as 13 wet cyclists turned up on their doorstep. They lit an open fire to dry shoes, they found many areas to dry wet gear, had a place for bikes to sit and the rooms were all different with very quaint names which the rooms matched!

If you want flash facilities and all the mod cons this is not the place for you to stay.
However if you want to experience staying in an old time NZ pub/hotel and the atmosphere this brings with it then you will love it.
The owners are very hospitable and also very good cooks so you will not go hungry by any means.
Rooms are oldish and quite small but are warm and comfortable and definitely have character.
If staying in winter expect to have to chip ice off your car windows in the morning as Ophir is a really cold place.

We came here after reading reviews and were not mistaken at all. Quaint pub with heaps of memorabilia a around. Wasn't sure what to expect but wow wow wow. When the food came out presentation was amazing tasted even better. Generous portions of wonderful food .hubby had prawn curry light delicious and creamy...just devine and I had the salt and pepper squid served with a delicious salad and a lemon sauce for the squid. Very generous struggled to eat it all even though we were famished. Cocktail delicious too. Please go there well worth it. Great chef

+1
So we discovered this hidden little gem a few months ago and have visited a few times. Every time without fail we have been wowed! The service is amazing, the food is out of this world and overall experience just makes you come back again and again.
Alongside all of this is homemade sauces for sale, a little pop up shop that sells items you have to see and accommodation.
The team at Blacks make you feel like family from the minute you walk in and I cannot rave this guys enough. There are a lot of big corporate organisations that can learn a thing or two about customer service and consistency from these guys.
I can't wait to go back and my mouth is watering just thinking of the food again....

While staying in Ophir we strolled down for a Sunday afternoon Rosé and so enjoyed the atmosphere decided to return the next evening for dinner.
The tables in the garden were an obvious choice on a warm February night, and the service was efficient and friendly.
We chose Salt and Pepper Squid and Greek Salad for our mains and they were both beautiful in presentation and flavour.
This family run hotel gives guests the very best of hospitality and a world class menu. Highly recommend.

Omakau was our first overnight stop whilst cycling the Otago central rail trail at the end of March and Blacks Hotel was the obvious choice for an evening meal for the four of us. We had booked in advance and arrived early and enjoyed relaxing drinks in the garden. Service was prompt and the staff were lovely. Two of us opted for the lamb shoulder (recommended by a fellow cyclist we passed on the trail), it didn’t disappoint. The other two opted for the steak, which was huge and tasty and prawn cocktail as a main. Overall we had an great evening. Thanks Sandy nice to meet you all, we’ll definitely call in again.

Rooms very overpriced but the restaurant was good. Overall just somewhere I wouldn’t stay again it’s very all over the show and for $175per night for two tiny single beds in a tiny room with no room to really move. Currently on the market so likely reflects the room price.

After a day on the Rail Trail we needed a cold beer & great service & this is exactly what we got! We wished we had stayed in Ophir for another night as we enjoyed the welcoming service here & would have enjoyed dinner had we not pre-booked elsewhere.
We will be back. Thanks for the lemon in the Corona on arrival & the girls liked the gin you recommended. Just get that van on the main road with bikes on roof my partner says to tell all your here.
