Rustic, exotic, english garden meets the tasman sea, endless sweet birdsongs, cliffside views are some of the memories I have of our time at Bethells Beach Cottages. The cottages are way up on a hill which provides the most amazing views and sense of privacy. John greeted us with, "Welcome to the center of the universe." He gave us a tour of the grounds, explaining the the various plants and trees, such as the pohutakawa (New Zealand Christmas tree) with its beautiful red flowers, the manuka and kanuka honey trees, the kawakawa that grows a yellow-orange fruit which I courageously tasted and was fascinated by its anesthetic quality. We were also honored to meet Trude Bethell, owner of the cottages. She made us feel welcomed and at home. To get the most out of your experience at Bethells Beach cottages, keep your mind and heart wide open - be curious - allow nature to speak to you.

While travelling around New Zealand we had the good fortune to stay with Trude and John. The homely cottages, complete with big comfy bed were well equipped and ours had a lovely view from the kitchen and garden patio. John had a wealth of knowledge on local walks, which we used to plan our days. Coming back after exploring to sit on the lawn and watch the stunning sunset, while listening to the birds and waves crash below was out of this world . What made our stay though was Trude and John, nothing was too much trouble, we felt right at home and enjoyed listening to their stories. This place is a gem which Trude and John have poured their love in to, we highly recommend.

This is an lovely place to enjoy your time in Auckland and the surrounding awesome beach of Bethells Beach and nearby Piha Beach.The views are extraordinary, accommodations are lovely and comfortable and you can enjoy privacy and plenty of room. John and Trude were lovely hosts and we greatly enjoyed our time at Bethells Beach cottages. Close to Swanson rail station for a convenient trip to Auckland as well.

We really enjoyed our stay here over the long weekend, super friendly and welcoming hosts with little touches that made the difference. The views didn't let us down and we were super lucky with excellent sunny weather and little wind.
We stayed in the apartment and while not spacious or luxurious gave us everything we needed. The patio right outside the door was great, as was the wood fired BBQ. The jot tub is also very close and lovely. The TV is in the bedroom rather than the living room but we didn't use it. Wifi was good and I was able to live stream some sport no worries.
I made use of the massage service and the therapist was truly excellent, the remedial treatment I got was up there with anything I have ever experienced.
This place may not be for the luxury traveler who wants marble bathrooms and soft plush furnishings but it was just what we were after, we'll be back for sure.

Staying at Bethells Beach Cottages was an absolute pleasure, we honestly did not want to leave. The surroundings, gardens, out door fire and views were nourishing and soul enriching. The cottage was warm, inviting, comfortable and had everything we needed and then some. The hot tub an extra treat on a cold windy day. Trude and John were both lovely, friendly, informative and helpful with booking and our stay. Definitely will be returning again. Thank you so much Trude and John for being such gracious hosts and for your time and caring when we arrived. The cake and glass of bubbles was a wonderful surprise and much appreciated, giving a personal touch. We stayed in the beautiful Turehu cottage with the most magnificent views. Although this rustic cottage is the older of the three it is well equipped and clean and tidy with a great choice of magazines and books. All and all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back many more times. This is now a favourite holiday destination for us. We loved exploring the beach and lake.

This is an incredible place to relax and unwind. A beautiful location with stunning views overlooking the beach. The little cottage was warm and cozy with the sun streaming in throughout the day. Cooking on the outdoor BBQ as the sun sets over the ocean below was magic and soaking in the hot tub under the stars before bed made for extra deep sleeping. A great stay.

We returned to this magical spot where we got married 20 years ago and it was just as special as we remember! We enjoyed our time relaxing in the comfortable hammock overlooking one of the best views in the country and soaking in our private kiwi hot tub on our patio while we watched the sun set! The Terehu cottage has a unique character and rustic charm with it's beautiful conservatory & bathroom. The bed is extremely comfortable and we loved the quality of the linen & towels. We also enjoyed our game of table tennis in the pavilion. Thank you Trude and John!

Stayed here for a couple of nights and were just so disappointed at how run down the place was. We watched cockroaches crawl over the benches and walls as we layed in bed. Ahhhhh!!! Yes, it does have lovely views over Bethells Beach but the rest of the place is disgusting. I don't think they have dusted the place for years and there are spider webs everywhere. The activity room is also a mess. Definately no cleaning been done in there for years. I can't understand how they get away with charging huge nightly rates. Surely there are other places to stay? Sorry, I can't recommend.

This is a country establishment and we do our utmost to minimalise bugs and clean/vacuum extensively. The cottage is on ground level and is closely surrounded by extensive gardens and because we try to be as eco friendly as possible we deliberately keep to a minimum the use of chemical insecticides and as a result there is a certain inevitability to some garden insects indoors. We note your note your concerns and we were sorry we could not talk this through while you were here. The floors were steam mopped prior to your arrival. The bed was aired and freshly made on the day of your arrival with the imported mattress for ultimate luxury. The two vases of flowers were full of colour. We hope you enjoyed the easel provided. Amazing place with breathtaking views, given the location on the hill, you can see the beach and the sea. Cottage is very cosy and homely and house surrounding land very well taken care of. Trud and John were very kind and helpful hosts. We stayed only one night, but immediately decided to come back.
