Bethany 101 was built more than 170 years ago, at the beginning of the British Colonial era, and has offered its residents luxurious accommodation, world class cuisine, and an environment of inspiring beauty ever since. The manor’s décor is faultlessly classic and was meticulously renewed to its original splendour in 2013, incorporating many original antique fittings and furniture in the style of old Ceylon. We are happy to say that Bethany 101 is more resplendent today than it has ever been throughout its long history making it the premier boutique hotel in the Kalpitiya and Puttalam areas. The entire villa plays host to only six guest bedrooms, assuring you of a private and exclusively luxurious stay. Outside, commodious verandas with easy chairs sweep around the manor, offering an unobstructed view of an oasis like garden with an expansive lawn and an exquisite swimming area, all shaded by frangipani trees. Bethany 101 is a paradise boutique hotel and complete five star holiday destination. It has been our family home for generations, and our goal is to make it feel like your home as well. Our staff value hospitality and service very highly, and work to make every detail of your stay perfect. Nestled between the shore of pristine Puttalam Lagoon and the sheer majesty of Sri Lanka’s dry zone in the north western province, Bethany 101 is centrally located in Puttalam, just footsteps from town. We are also minutes from Kalpitiya, which is Sri Lanka’s premier dolphin and whale-watching hotspot. It also offers some of the best Kite Surfing in Sri Lanka. A short drive will take you to Wilpattu National Park, the island’s largest wildlife reserve, legendary for leopards and sloth bears. Anuradhapura, the greatest of Sri Lanka’s ancient capitals, is little more than an hour away, making it a comfortable and rewarding day trip.

This is a truly unique place to stay. We were a family of five and didn't see another person during our two night stay. The house has been lovingly restored and we felt as though iwe belonged. Chaminda and his lovely staff could not do enough for us. They set up dinner on the lawn both nights, and breakfast was in our dining room. We had the entire villa to ourselves and the beautiful pool. We had some of the best Sri Lankan curries during our entire trip. A perfect destination for our safari at Wilpattu.

It was a short stay but we thoroughly enjoyed it. Everything was delightful from the well-appointed rooms to the beautiful garden. The atmosphere was peaceful; the staff was friendly and always willing to help. The food was unbelievable with an amazing variety on offer. One of the best boutique hotels that I have stayed at, I’ll definitely be going back.

Super Relaxing, Superb Antique furniture which blend in with this historical place. Superb Food and the staff were great. Very hospitable place. Rooms are very comfortable. I can not complain about the place at all. Nice place for the kids to enjoy. Only downside is the location. But Wilpattu National Park is only 45 minutes away and we managed to see Leopard, bear, elephants and many more. Highly recommended for family relaxing holiday.

The house is a beautifully maintained colonial house opposite the sea. However there is no beach to speak of and the town offers very little other than a medley of shops selling ubiquitous pots and pans. If you intend to visit Wilpattu wildlife park then the location is ideal. The plus points are that the service in this house is second to none. Noone could do enough for us. The food is amazing. It would be a mistake not to take all your meals at the house. I have no hesitation in confirming all positive observations about the food. My wife and I have not eaten better in Sri Lanka. I am afraid that I felt the need to give 4 rather than 5 stars because of the noise. The calls to prayer are, of course, part of the atmosphere but there was other music and the like which disturbed our nights' sleep. We were told that the music was because it was both Independence Day and election season. That may be the case and if so disregard the observation about noise, though our room was adjacent to the main road and so we heard lorries drive past at night and the odd train hoot. All said this is still highly recommended. I would repeat that the service was so caring, considerate and thoughtful. Everyone was endlessly attentive even to preparing a Tiffin box for us for our trip to the park and even something for our driver.

A group of 12 of us came to stay at Bethany 101 for New Year’s Eve and the following four nights.
Where to start...

It was quite possibly the best place I (and most of the crew I was with) have ever stayed. For many different reasons....

Firstly, it’s a seriously beautiful house. Filled with antique furniture and cool maps and paintings, stain glass windows, beautiful wooden beds, Lovely rooms with en suite bathrooms.

In the middle courtyard area there is a perfect green lawn and a fabulous pool-we had a real hoot here for New Year’s Eve. Lots of room to play games, dance and chill out.

Then the staff...what can I say- an absolute dream team. So so so lovely, friendly, accommodating, attentive and fab. Really just got the sense they wanted us to have a lovely time.

Chamimda and his team Pradeep (incredible chef) Indika, Ashan, harshan and Mahinsa were all absolutely wonderful.

One evening we all played cricket in the lane, seriously good fun (English Australia and Sri lanka all playing together !!)

The food.... unbelievable.

Some of, if not THE best food we have had In 2.5 weeks in Sri Lanka.

You can choose from western or Sri Lanka food on a menu, we just asked for Sri Lankan curry’s each night and morning, and just asked them to pick for us what they thought was best...it was all always delicious. We had lots of really authentic dishes (hoppers, kotttu amazing curries)

We all loved this aubergine dish that we ended up requesting a lot, they even taught us how to make it!!

the coconut sambal...the dhal...the paratha...I will be dreaming of the food for many years to come!

On the last night we had a sea food bbq banquet... chilli crab, prawn and cuttlefish fish skewers, fish parcels in banana leaves.. one of the nicest meals I’ve had.

The area-I was slightly dubious at first about spending such a long chunk of time up in Puttalam having left the beautiful beaches of the south coast for the lagoon and the wind turbines.

However I couldn’t have been more wrong. We spend our days safariing in Wilpattu (finally spotting an elusive leopard on our deck visit!!) spinner dolphin watching Off kalpitya, exploring the ancient city and of course, a fair bit of lounging by the pool!

And on top of all that it was completely reasonably priced.

Serious top spot for a big group!

Couldn’t recommend highly enough, just hope I will be able to return one day....

The hotel is lovingly restored and well looked after. Room was great with old four post bed and netting, nice clean bathroom. Garden beautiful and pool refreshing. Food was excellent - dinner for two on the lawn both nights was treat - and was god value. No wifi was available but maybe we should have asked ? Otherwise very helpful staff but some issues beyond their control - adjacent lagoon can be a bit smelly, house and nearby road noisy, and little to do beyond swim, read and relax. Not licenced but staff can assist in getting a drink if desired.

I stayed at Bethany 101 for about a month while I was posted in Puttalam for a work term. It is not enough to say that the place was like staying in my own home. The rooms were so comfortable, and the hotel itself had all of the required amenities like a pool (which was maintained to perfection), a fully-equipped TV lounge, and most importantly a world-class talented chef, Pradeep, who never failed to impress me with his cooking. The manager, Chaminda, is a gem of a man who will stop at nothing to make sure your stay is as comfortable as possible. It is difficult to find people like him who would go out of his way to accommodate even the most difficult of requests. Even if I tried, I cannot think of anything that Bethany 101 could not provide that would have made my stay better. You could spend hours enjoying the neatly cut grass of the immaculate garden. The colonial-British architecture is breathtaking, and though old is maintained perfectly. Hats-off to the owner, Mr Aatif, for being so courteous and a pleasure to talk to and also obviously for keeping a place like this in such exquisite order! You could go to any fancy 5-star hotel in the world, but none of them would ever be able to give you the uniquely fantastic experience that Bethany 101 could. I miss it a great deal and i wish I had never left. If I ever go back to Puttalam, it is a sure-fire destination on my itinerary. It might even be my only destination!

Betany is an old house located on the road between colombo and puttlam. It relatively lose to the lagoon and very close to the town of puttlam.

The old house has a series touch with old but well maintained furniture. Rosewood beds, teak chests and a gorgeous writing table which once belonged to the grand father of the current owner. Since it is a family house you don't get the feeling of a hotel.

Staff are courteous and very friendly. Chaminda who manages the hotel is always trying to ensure that the guests are comfortable. Managed to arrange a barbecue specially for us. Food is pretty good too. Simply centre you are close to the town there are other choices.

Will be definitely back!

We stayed just one night on our way to Wilpattu. We were the only guests and were looked after very well with a wonderful dinner served next to the pool.
Our room was lovely but unfortunately near the busy main road that kept us awake. We had to up early at 4.30am and didn't need the alarm call as we were already awake.

3 generations of us spent a magical 6 days at Bethany 101 over new year and my daughters birthday . Chaminda and team took great pride and excitement in creating a fabulous surprise for our daughter , what a treat for us all. The fabulously manicured garden and pool create an oasis in an otherwise non touristic town. The rooms decorated with outstanding antiques and blissfully comfy beds . The food was outstanding, we ate our evening meals in the garden , in a covered area overlooking the beautifully lit pool or in the dining room . I have tried to replicate the mongolian bbq since returning home but it is just not he same. Thank you to all the Bethany team for your truly warm Sri Lankan welcome , we have memories we will never forget.

Bethany 101 is within 40 km of the National Wildlife Park by the name of Wilpattu (literal translation "10 Lakes" or "10 waterholes"). This is one of the best wildlife parks in the country with a high probability of seeing Leopards. It is best that you enter the park as early as possible (opens at 6 a.m.) as this gives you the best opportunity of seeing these elusive felines. Bethany will gladly arrange excellent packed breakfast (if you intend spending half the day in the park) or even lunch (for an extended safari). Early morning and late afternoon (5 to 6 p.m.) are the best hours for viewing wild animals and the light is great for photography. My hobby is wildlife photography, so my comments are somewhat weighted with photography in mind. The food, accommodation and ambiance at Bethany is outstanding and a dip in their swimming after a safari is pure magic!

It's just two hours (give or take depending on traffic) directly from the Colombo International Airport. I am sure that they do have an airport pickup service that can be arranged. You should call Keshini directly on +94 75610 1101. She was most helpful in arranging all aspects of our stay. If all else fails, a taxi directly from the airport to Bethany 101 should only cost circa 35 - 45 US$
