Overlooking the popular surf break at Tauranga Bay, The Bay House is in a unique coastal location giving all who come here a sense of escape to somewhere close to Paradise. Formerly the local surf club, The Bay House has evolved into luxury “island style” accommodation (opened Jan 2019) offering brand new luxury beachfront studios and stylish garden suites in an idyllic and peaceful setting. Tauranga Bay, Maori for “sheltered anchorage”, is 16kms south of Westport and 57kms north of Punakaiki on the West Coast of South Island. Our unique seaside location is a just a stone throw from the Tasman Sea. Step out of your beachside studio or garden suite, walk just 20 to 50 metres and you are on the beach. There are rock pools to fossick or bathe in, soft golden sands to stretch out on, amazing surf to play in (lessons available) and short strolls or long walks all around plus the new recently opened Kawatiri Coastal Trail just 50 metres from our property. Choose to do it all…. or as little as possible, and at the end of the day be lulled to sleep by the sounds of the ocean and chatter of penguins. Stay for a day or more and simply relax, unwind and be happy in our little corner of Eden.

This accommodation has to be experienced to be believed. No expense has been spared in the set up of these delightful units. The setting is stunning with the ability to sit on the balcony and enjoy the view of the surf. The shower is to die for (I could have spent all day in there) Breakfast is absolutely superb with fruit, cereal, cheese, ham, bread, and croissants. Oh and endless Expresso. Doc and Sandra make wonderful hosts with excellent conversation. We can't wait to return.

For our recent trip to the West Coast we chose to stay at the Bay House Beachside, based on it’s many excellent reviews, and we’re delighted to report that the decision to stay there was one of the best travel choices we’ve ever made.

Nestled on a bush covered hillside on the south side of Tauranga Bay the suites boast stunning views of the bay and Cape Foulwind to the north. These studio units, having been crafted with great care by the owners, offer comfort and elegance amidst a surprising solitude.

First class accommodations; stunning views from your private balcony; delicious breakfasts so generous as to make further meals all but unnecessary; clean, modern furnishings carefully designed to make your stay indulgently comfortable ... everything about this place screams “quality”.

And to top it all off are your delightful hosts Sandra & Doc, who work overtime to ensure that you feel welcome and taken care of.

If you’re looking for the cheapest place to stay on the Coast, then this isn’t the place for you. But if you’re looking for world-class quality, comfort, cleanliness, breathtaking scenery, wonderful food and the best bar in the region ... then this is the only place to stay.

We look forward to our next visit.

Set on a peninsula looking directly out on the surf break at the epic Tauranga Bay, “The Bayhouse” is effectively a luxury lodge that’s an accessible treat. Better than that, the hosts Doc and Sandra have thought of everything and deliver it with genuine care and interest. If you’re a bit of a finickity chap like me, you’ll appreciate the attention to detail that’s gone in here. From the hardwood floors and bench top, automatic blinds, a bathroom like an oasis and the coup de grace; The Throne Bidet System which really is “the future of toilets” and leaves you wondering how you’ll survive returning home again. The weather was great while we were here. This is a gem and pretty hard to compare with anywhere else I’ve been. Thoroughly recommend and will return.

If you are looking for a luxuriously appointed, spotlessly clean, cabin with a view of the sea, that makes you feel like you could be the balcony of any grand ship, this is most definitely the place to be. The units are spacious and fitted out with some amazing mod cons. ( one especially is special ). Our hosts, Sandra and Doc, are the most welcoming and friendly people. Doc produced the best breakfasts ever, complimented with Sandra's lovely fresh fruits and coffee. Staying a second night, a fabulous evening meal of your choice is offered as part of the stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our two nights and will return. Thank you Sandra and Doc, you are lovely company.

This is now one of our “happy places” to visit. The accommodation was superb with beach front views (studio one), the food was awesome ;both breakfasts and dinners yummy and plentiful. Big thanks to Doc and Sandra for the amazing hospitality ,absolutely wonderful and what a special slice of paradise in our country. With not being able to travel overseas,we have had to find places of appeal and this certainly is one for us. Tauranga Bay is a surfing beach as well so it really ticked a lot of boxes for the fams. We had a fantastic 2 days with Doc and Sandra at their first rate holiday accommodation. We have been touring in NZ for almost 2 weeks and the accommodation at Cape Foulwind was a step above what we have experience so far. The view to the north across the bay is to be experienced. We went to sleep each evening to the sound of breaking waves. The high end cabin type accommodation has been equipped with quality fittings. The facilities were clean and well maintained. Doc and Sharon met us each morning and delivered a more than adequate and satisfying continental breakfast. The daily fees were a bit above other providers however we were more than happy to pay it as the overall experience was brilliant.

Pantastic place, very friendly and helpful hosts, it is one of the most wonderful places we have ever been, concerning rooms, their design and cleanliness, concerning hosts and concerning the scenic view to the bay. We also liked the philosophy of the owners towards nature. Breakfast is great with special food and with best coffee I have ever had.

The property has been meticously built and it is clear that every feature has had a great deal of thought given to it... being so close to nature with the beauty and ruggedness of this West Coast beach so close, you feel at one with the landscape. The interiors of our beachfront cottage were beautiful, a five star offering in this s slightly remote location. You will come here and not want to leave. Our only disappointment in staying here was that we only stayed one night. Even if the weather was bad you would happily sit, every waking hour on your private balcony, or in the comfort of your armchair, observing the ocean.

We opted to have in-room dining as we knew that it was a short drive to the nearest eating option. We organised this the night before and were so happy we did. The meal was outstanding! Breakfast is complimentary and that too was just perfect.

Our hosts Sandra and Doc were amazing and really how to extend hospitality!

My wife and I stayed at the Bayhouse for two nights in Feb 2023. We had the Studio 1 which is right at the front with unobstructed views. It was a lovely cottage. Top of the range appliances. The bed was super comfortable . The unit was very clean and well presented. Our hosts, Sandra and Doc were lovely people and couldn't do enough for all their guests. I would highly recommend this property even though it is about 15k from Westport. The local pub is only 3 k down the road. 10/10.
