We recently had a couple of nights here while we explored Golden Bay. It was well located as it was close to the Abel Tasman National Park for walks and kayaking but is also close to the scenery and activities of Golden Bay. The room was very comfortable with amazingly beautifully comfortable beds and pillows. It certainly ranks as one of the best beds we have slept in which I sometimes do wonder why, if sleep is your business, then why not provide your guests with comfort- still so many places fail to do this. The room was a little old fashioned looking- this is intentional not because they have not bothered which was quaint. There was lovely attention to detail like cosy robes, nice towels, refillable soap, lotion etc, a dedicated makeup flannel etc. There were adequate tea and coffee making facilities (milk supplied was a bit on the small side) and a fridge. There was not a Smart TV but it did mention that Chromecast was available from reception but we could not be bothered with this and we just used our computer for movies etc.
The pool looked a little tired and not really very inviting, which included not much space to relax by the pool. It had started to rain so luckily I did not have much interest in it by the time we got there, but this was a feature that encouraged me to book Ratanui. I had a look under the spa pool cover and this also looked really uninviting- it looked as if there were sand and dirt on the bottom so decided not to use it.
There was a lovely communal lounge for reading, eating, drinking or just hanging out.
Continental breakfast was included which was simple but ample. My husband loved the homemade preserves.
The staff were lovely and friendly which is always the cherry on the top.

Hello Auckland Wiz This is a great review! We have just brought new beds for all the rooms so I am very pleased you enjoyed them. I think that a smart t.v is a very good idea. We will certainly look into that. Unfortunately not everyone washes the sand off their feet before getting into the spa, we do maintain and test it daily, but being across the road from the beach this does happen often. The pool will be getting painted in our down time. Thank you for taking the time to write this for us and I am pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. We hope to see you again. Kind regards Katrina

We recently stayed four nights at this lovely place.

The rooms are very well appointed and quite. The beds are just what Bear would love...

We dined in the restaurant every night. The food is perfect, well presented and very tasty.

The prices of the meals are very reasonable considering the quality of the food and atmosphere. You can dine outside on the deck or inside the restaurant.

The continental breakfast was a perfect way to start your day. Good choices and very tasty.

The wine list is reasonable and provides a very good choice of options.
The gin list was large with lots to choose from.

This place is very well run by two great hosts/managers who are very friendly and on the ball.
Their staff were very attentive and customer focused and made the stay a lot of fun.

Pohara Lodge is in a perfect location to explore Golden Bay in either direction to use it as a base to travel from.

We will definitely stay here again.

The lodge is more like a motel with 5 rooms either side of a central area. Steve was very helpful and gave us great ideas for our days in Abel Tasman area which were great recommendations. We enjoyed beautiful sunsets on the beach just opposite and breakfasts were a great opportunity to meet other guests and share experiences.

My husband and I stayed at Ratanui the week before Christmas and we already can’t wait to go back again! I expected Ratunui to be nice and if a high standard but it even exceeded our expectations. Simply said - Ratanui gets it right in every level! The lodge itself is absolutely lively in a beautiful area. The main lodge area is light and inviting and staff are friendly and knowledgeable while maintaining a very high level of professional service. Katrina is outstanding.
The rooms have such attention to detail that put it at the top. The quality of the room is very high end with wonderful bedding, towels, robes but it is the small details that set Ratanui apart. We love their commitment to using very local artisans, ingredients, wines etc. The beautiful coffee mugs by a local artisan and little bowl with Whittakers chocolates are beautiful. The gourmet coffee in a glass jar and little glass milk bottles are such a treat. The bath products are amazing and again locally produced.
We usually eat out in the area when travelling and not at the place we stay but we ate every meal at Ratanui and would come back just for the food alone -it is that good! The restaurant could be a top restaurant in any major city the food is classic done exceptionally well and dishes are well thought out. We really enjoyed and well done Chef! Service in the restaurant from two of the guys working there is spot on fabulous.
There is a lovely pool and spa area and every room has comfy oversized chairs and tables outside which we enjoyed for morning coffee.
Thank you Katrina and Ratanui staff- we hope to be back soon!

From the minute we arrived we felt relaxed and well looked after. Steve helped with arranging a trip to Farewell Spit and the sea shuttle around the beautiful Abel Tasman beaches.

Our room was lovely and had everything we needed. The gardens were beautiful. We sat outside in the sun for our cocktail before dinner on our first night. Cocktails were amazing as were the two dinners we had. Continental breakfast was included with fresh fruit, toast and cereals.

Steve and Pete work very hard to ensure their guests have a wonderful stay.

Room was nice with all the needed facilities, clean and modern. Very friendly and helpful staff. Included breakfast was nice but very limited without paying extra - you could have cereal and toast or something cooked and 1 hot drink ( no orange juice etc.) This feels a bit mean considering the price of the room.
We had a couple of meals in the restaurant - excellent food - recommended.

A lovely boutique lodge, centrally located, clean rooms, excellent communication, attentive staff.

We were contacted on the day of arrival advising we could check in earlier (tick). We were also asked what time we would like to eat in the restaurant (tick for marketing).

On check in, Ethan was a ball of energy, warmly welcoming us, showing us the local highlights of things to see and do. He welcomed us again as we had pre dinner drinks and I was glad we decided to eat there. The food was sumptuous (tick).

The rooms were well appointed, clean, and had the amenities you need (tick). A comfy bed with good pillow meant for a good nights sleep (tick).

We had breakfast (Included in the room rate) and again greeted by Ethan, who knew the names of everyone having breakfast, limited choices but our selections were delicious (tick).

Whilst the price is somewhat high, it was an enjoyable stay.

I celebrated a "significant" birthday here recently and Katrina went out of her way to accommodate us with many various options when I originally booked (in the dining area) for a lunch celebration.
The food was amazing, so delicious and well presented; and the service was excellent!
Thank you for a very memorable time. I highly recommend Ratanui Lodge for a special celebration or just a relaxing hour or two in this beautiful part of Golden Bay, with seating inside or outside.
We will be back!!

We have always enjoyed our stays at Ratanui however our most recent stay was the most enjoyable. The difference for this stay were the refurbished rooms which are now first class, the quality breakfasts that were available, the fine dining in the evenings and most importantly, the customer service we received. Christine and Zahid were outstanding hosts. We will certainly return to Ratanui Lodge and we will be sharing our 5 star plus experience with our friends.

I stayed here with a friend for one night during a trek through the Abel Tasman National Park and could not have had a more enjoyable stay. The lodge is exceptionally well run, Steve is a tremendous host, the food is delicious and the bed is among the most comfortable I ever slept in, due to the special mattress cover. Highly recommended.
