Detailed Reviews
A great hotel with stunning views of the river which feeds into the Atlantic Ocean. The sea air is wonderful to take in. The gym only opens at 9:00am which was a little surprising and it was not well equipped but you make the best out of what you're given. The breakfast is a banquet of epic proportions. The lunch at the bar area is more than filling with healthy options and different from your normal bar food menu. Dinner was equally impressive. The rooms are very spacious with great bathroom and comfy bed & pillows and very clean. Great desk to work at as well.

In ultra getaway mode - we had a break from the kids and as we loved Troia beach we headed straight to the Design Hotel - an old wish.
We were very well received.
The staff is 5 stars, super friendly and helpful!
We loved the Buffet dinner, from the fish soup to the starters including the fish (swordfish and croaker) as well as the perfectly cooked veal!
Breakfast with great quality and variety too.
As there wasn't much choice for a room in August, we stayed in a super spacious studio - improving in our opinion, more bottled water due to the "taste" of piped water and the noise from the plumbing - but 5* for the bed and the surprise of the cupcakes on arrival.
The pool area is spacious, the bar has friendly and helpful staff - we liked the ice creams and the passion fruit lemonade and the berlin balls they offered in the middle of the afternoon - what would be better would be the pool screen to naturally heat the water or add a water heating system that was cold!
The night was spent at the theater and casino!
Super important point to keep the elevators working! During rush hour we had to use the stairs twice... luckily we were on the second floor.
In short, we like to repeat!

We wanted to find a hotel in the Troia-Comporta region and we have been very pleased with our choice of the Troia Design Hotel. Price quality this hotel is unbeatable. The lobby is a bit dark and not too appealing but the room makes up for everything. Large and modern with a great bathroom, fabulous view and an outside balcony (we stayed in room 1014) . The hotel takes Covid very seriously hence breakfast is next door in the Convention Center with plenty of space. Very large swimming pool with huge sun deck (space for everyone). The hotel also provides (free) parking. There are plenty of good restaurants around the marina, just outside the hotel. Beaches all in walking distance though we went to several beaches around Comporta which is just 15 min driving. We would definitely go back!

We stayed here for 3 nights, the first night the power went down twice. there was only 1 working lift, which I had a buggy so I had to wait quite a long time to be able to fit inside the lift every time I had to use it. On the second night, I was given an apartment which smelled bad (I believe from the sinks). On the 3rd night there was a plate of food left in our room, which the food had mould and I had licked it without realising or expecting that from a 5 star hotel, I am pregnant so that also wasn’t the greatest. On the 4th day (check out day). There was a man cleaning the floors wearing all over body protective equipment and a mask meaning the product wasn’t the safest if inhaled or it made contact with the skin. My husband went for a swim as we were told we could still use the swimming pool and after being in the pool and also ingesting water he then realised there was product in the pool and we had to wait quite a while for someone to come over and say whether that was safe. Overall for a 5 star hotel not the best experience. Shocked and disappointed I still had to pay full price for this experience and all I got was “sorry”.

I made a reservation with a group of 4 people for a hen party. We booked the “perfect night” package adapted for our event, which was suggested by the hotel services (an idea that we approved as it had several things included).
One of them (and it was the beginning of the problems) was the VIP check in, which included food and drinks in the room upon arrival. We checked in later than usual, and even so, when we arrived at the room, there was absolutely nothing. Being a bachelorette party, it was the first flop!
Then, we must add that the floor of the indoor pool area is very dangerous and that the hotel's flip-flops have no grip whatsoever, so we kept slipping several times (and luckily no one actually fell). We've seen this happen to older people, which is even more worrying.
In addition to other small flaws, it is worth noting that in the end, when we checked out, they wanted to charge us around €300 more, compared to the package we had contracted. Luckily we had everything in writing in the email and it was easy to prove it, otherwise we don't know how it would be resolved.
Positive points include the breakfast, with a lot of variety and the spa, where we had great massages.
Furthermore, the service leaves something to be desired for a hotel of this quality and reference…

This hotel is right on the river and many rooms have views of the river or Atlantic Ocean. Beautiful sunsets from the property. It is a very modern and chic hotel and perfect for our anniversary celebration. Can’t wait to visit here in the summer.

Suite was LARGE! Great views, pool area spacious, staff generally pleasant. Excellent access to beach. One issue we had was at the bar area where food order arrived incorrect. Staff member (assumed it was manager) seemed to insinuate that we had ordered the wrong food - we did not. Otherwise, would stay here again!

This is unfortunately the fifth and final time staying at this hotel. It has never been a good experience but the choices in the area are limited. The front desk service is not very good, actually the overall service is not great. We have been told twice now that we would get responses to our concerns / requests and we have heard nothing. We have had heated discussions with staff who actually argue with you if you would like something clarified. We have been disappointed on every occasion.
The room service good is not great and usually comes cold or poorly cooked. The rooms are spacious but dated and not always clean.
Breakfast is okay.
Can’t wait until the new hotels in the area open!

It's a shame that so much potential is not being used and that it is being allowed to age like this.
We are staying in a suite with a whirlpool on the balcony. The water seems to have not been changed in ages. The water stinks and strange white foam comes out of the jets, which does not look very healthy.
The suite, which is very nice in itself, is very old. There is something broken everywhere. Cupboards are sagging, telephones are broken, the shower is broken, lights don't work and so on...
The plaster is crumbling from the walls in places.
Unfortunately, the service also leaves a lot to be desired. Special requests are simply ignored here. We asked for loungers because our terrace is huge. Nothing happened here. Not even a response.
The staff does not speak any English. Only the totally annoyed people at the reception have a strong command of the language.
Any kind of communication is impossible. We couldn't even understand the translator.
The breakfast and the breakfast room are so poorly and carelessly designed that it is indescribable. Hardly any choice, zero, eight, fifteen.
This hotel is definitely not recommended. Definitely not worth 5 stars.
The whole resort outside also seems to have had its best days and is now behind it. Here too, you won't get anywhere with English in any restaurant. All the waiters are extremely annoyed. Hospitality is completely ignored here in the Troia resort.
Conclusion - never again

My husband and I loved our lengthy stay in the hotel. That said I agree with previous reviews that some aspects of the hotel are below 5 star standards: tired looking wooden wardrobes and difficult to manage air conditioning. However the room was very big and had a balcony with a lovely view. The pool area is great. The service in general is very good. Breakfast was a plenty to choose from. The beach is round the corner. Troia is very calm and perfect for a good rest and a break from it all, especially in COVID times.
