We stayed at Homestead St. James for 10 days in January 2020.
A beautiful bed and breakfast hotel, close to Kalk Bay, a charming place south of Cape Town.
We were greeted very warmly by Homestead Manager Mr. Clive, who was our first point of contact during our stay.
The house and our room were very nice, well-kept and carefully renovated in this beautiful old house. Beautifully spacious and open, a mixture of history and modernity.
The location is very good to the nearby Kalk Bay, which is a very nice little fishing village with lots of little shops and delicious restaurants.
Opposite the hotel there is a nice beach called "Danger Beach". Here the dangerous current of the sea is probably meant. So be careful when swimming!
At Homestead there is also a beautiful, well-kept pool with loungers.
During our stay Mr. Clive looked after us with great recommendations at all times to the surrounding area. Very attentive!
We had a wonderful vacation in a great house with a very friendly and helpful staff, especially thanks to Mr. Clive and Team!
We would love to come back!
Homestead, St. James, a place of dreams ...

Beautiful location on False Bay. First Class accommodation with great staff and attention to detail. This is walking distance from good restaurants in Kalk Bay.
Close to Boulder Bay (penguins) and short transfer to downtown Capetown, Table Mountain and the Botanic gardens.

My wife and I went here for a few days for the beginning of our honeymoon. I've got to say, it's easily the nicest place I've ever stayed. Extremely friendly staff, upon arrival, an awesome host named Goodnews met us, showed us around the place, attended to everything we could possibly need. The room was a superb open plan space, with a fantastically comfortable bed, and a swimming pool sized bath tub. A particularly nice touch was the two shower heads in the shower, perfect for us when we got out of the pool and wanted to wash off before heading out. The view from the balcony in the back garden is stunning, overlooking Kalk Bay and they served us champagne up there upon our arrival. I'm blown away by this place and will stay here any time we're in Cape Town.

We stayed for one night for our anniversary. We liked that we only had a short distance to drive from Cape Town to St. James. But note that the location is cut off from the sea by a rail track. In fact, the hotel is owned by Rovos Rail, which runs the luxury trans African vintage train rides. The story of how the family started the company is inspiring.

The property is a beautifully renovated house with two regular rooms on the ground floor and a suite on the first floor. However, as another reviewer noted, the atmosphere is a bit sterile.

We were met by GoodFellow who showed us to our room. We asked to pay but were assured we could do this the next day at check out. After settling in, we noticed that the TV in front of our bed was not working. We were alone in the house with no staff and there was no number on the phone to call. We tried their office number we found on the Internet but only got voice mail. An hour later GoodFellow came back apologetic saying that he was also looking after two other properties managed by the company. He had been given the message to fix our TV--a previous guest had taken an adapter plug. GoodFellow apologised that the room had not been properly checked after the last guest left over 2 weeks before our stay. Indeed, while the room was clean, the windows were full of bird poop and there was a strong smell of pesticides around the property and even in the shower water, which made us think that management was lacking at the property.

That said, the upgraded suite and bathroom was huge and beautiful. With an adjoining lounge to ourselves and a computer we could use. This was handy as the property WIFI didn't work very well. The bed was huge and super comfortable. We got a great night's sleep and weren't too bothered by the nearby trains.

They had made dinner reservations of us at the Harbor House which was wonderful. (They only serve breakfast.) Upon our return, a bottle of champagne was in our room which we very much appreciated.

Breakfast was adequate but not exceptional. They have a chef, maid and GoodFellow was again in attendance. They make your eggs to order and you can also have cereal, toast, etc. In fact, you can help yourself during your stay to quite a bit of alcohol in the kitchen if you are so inclined.

We had booked a late massage and arranged a late check out. After our massages, there was again no one to be found. We even had to let the masseuse out of the property using our keys. We then waited an hour to try and get a bill. Had we had an international flight, we would have missed it. The maid on duty tried to prepare an invoice but was clueless about what to charge us and we then learned that we were supposed to pay the masseuse directly. This is surprising as the hotel does advertise spa services and few people walk around south Africa with a lot of cash for security reasons. Finally it was agreed they would send us the bill to pay.

We called 5 days later as we still hadn't received the bill and wanted to ensure the masseuse was paid. (She was excellent.) Not receiving any response locally, we called Rovos Rail in Pretoria. They looked into the matter and admitted that they dropped the ball due to it being low season and there being staff holidays. We were given a chance to try the St. James Manor House, which is apparently the flagship property another time.

We will update our review when we do, but this stay at the St. James Homestead was less than the special, hassle free anniversary experience we had hoped for.

This is an exceptional property and one that I would wholeheartedly recommend. It has to be experienced to be believed. The attention to detail was perfect with the decor and furnishings all date back to old colonial times. Our hosts Laurence and Goodnews were amazingly helpful and attentive. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay

The Homestead is a great place to relax and use as a base for getting around the Cape Town area. Just outside Cape Town but only a 20 minute cab ride into the centre of town. Superb views of the ocean and the staff are very helpful and friendly.
Would recommend this place in a heartbeat.
Nice bars and restaurants close by.

This must be the best kept secret in Cape Town! The rooms are large and luxurious, the location is stunning and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The house is well appointed and very comfortable with a fully stocked fridge and wine bar. Facilities include a very nice swimming pool and BBQ area.

Having some very picky people in my family, finding a place which pleases everyone can be tricky! But......we got everything we could want with St James Homestead.
There are only 6 rooms spread around a very spacious house. The rooms are huge, with separate sitting areas, super king beds and beautiful bathrooms, with a roll top bath, large shower and 2 basins.
We were very well looked after by Patricia, and an excellent chef for our breakfasts in the morning.
There was also an unexpected treat, the kitchen is stocked with wine, beer and snacks which was included in our price. Simply help yourself was the message!
The views of the ocean are lovely while eating breakfast, and you are in walking distance from St James's which is a very pretty town.
The homestead has many outdoor and indoor seating areas, so you feel like you could almost be in your own private villa sometimes!
Overall, simply the best place we stayed throughout our entire trip. Perfect for couples and families,
