My husband and I have just got back from our stay at Knockderry House after 3 nights here over the August bank holiday weekend. The hotel was a lovely place to stay and all the staff were so friendly and welcoming, nothing was too much for them. We stayed in the king room named Beinne Arthur (room 8) and had a lovely breakfast each morning. Guests were able to choose what type of breakfast they wished to have e.g. Traditional cooked breakfast, vegetarian, Scottish breakfast etc...we opted for the traditional cooked breakfast which consisted of a croissant, toast, egg, bacon, sausage, tattie scone, black pudding, tomato and mushroom which was a lovely way to start the day. The views from our room were excellent with a view of the gardens and Loch Long...The location of the hotel is about a 30-60 minute drive to some of the main places that we visited such as Helensburgh, Balloch, Luss and Balmaha but this was not an issue for us as it was nice to stay in a hotel with a quiet location and away from all the main tourist areas. The hotel felt 100% safe walking around especially with the Covid 19 situation. All staff were wearing masks, the tables and chairs were fully wiped down and cleaned after each sitting and the tables were also spread apart so you were never sat too near any of the other guests at the other tables. Also we were not able to check in until 4pm but this was due to the extra measures put in place for cleaning the rooms between guests to ensure they are thoroughly cleaned. I would 100% recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay in Scotland.

Room Tip: Choose a room with views of Loch Long and it is lovely to look out your window and enjoy the view

We chose Knockderry as our honeymoon destination immediately after our wedding in the Lake District. The lovely lady on the phone helped me choose the best room overlooking Loch Long. Our room had a lovely balcony, which unfortunately was inaccessible due to the window being restricted. The same window had blinds from ceiling height which we had to stand on a chair to reach the pulley as this was way above head height (I’m 5’8”). The bathroom had a very inviting roll top bath with lots of products on the shelf next to the bath. Luckily my husband found the small print that said they weren’t complimentary (one bottle was £45) before I actually took the plunge. We had tea/coffee facilities which weren’t topped up during our stay, and one bottle of water between us which again wasn’t replenished. We stayed for 5 nights, and in all that time was offered tea or coffee with breakfast (standard). It wasn’t until our very last morning we had different staff, and was offered cappuccino or latte. I was a bit gobsmacked as I’d had to drink tea all week due to not being a lover of strong coffee.
All in all it was ‘ok’. Would we go back? Probably not which is a shame as we frequent Kilcreggan a few times a year. Back to the drawing board to find new accommodation

Knockderry House have just given us the most fantastic weekend break. The hotel itself is a fascinating and beautiful old building and our room (4) was just incredibly romantic and peaceful, complete with four poster bed! Our dog was made just as welcome as we were with towel, dog bowl and treat in the room and he was able to accompany us to dinner, drinks and breakfast if we desired. We were married at Knockderry 10 years ago and so this was an anniversary trip away. We could not have been happier with our experience. The staff are without doubt the best hotel staff I have ever encountered and made our tip so memorable. I am frankly astonished at one review which describes the food as awful as our experience was the complete opposite! The food is incredible; great quality ingredients expertly cooked and presented. The food and drinks are not cheap but to us perfectly reflected the quality and overall experience. It was a 7 hour drive for us to get there but we would be back in a heartbeat! If you are looking for peace and tranquility in an outstanding hotel- this is it!

Room Tip: Front rooms have a view of the lock which is beautiful We found room 4 very quiet.

The location was excellent in terms of view of the lock. We particularly enjoyed a drink outside with waterside views. It was a beautiful hotel in terms of its historical style. Covid rules were clear and followed.
Staff were friendly. Food was to a good standard.
We felt there needed to be more staff as they did seem a bit stretched. We appreciate Covid 19 restrictions could have impacted this.
We felt the standard of the room was average. Our view was of a courtyard which was less than desirable. We stayed in room 10. The cleanliness was fair although the shower/bath drain was blocked.
Our one main niggle about our stay was about the communication of getting an evening meal. We booked online and were disappointed that upon our arrival we were told we couldn't get a table in the restaurant unless it was at 5.45 which was within 15 minutes of our arrival. This wasn't suitable and was too early for an evening meal. The hotel restaurant was full after this time up until 8pm when the last table booking could be made due to covid restrictions. We appreciated Covid restrictions meant that there was limited availability and time to dine. The hotel did email after we had booked to ask if we wanted to dine in the restaurant but we hadn't had the opportunity to check our email as we were traveling. We were also told upon arrival we could dine in our room or outside up until 8pm. We were also given a couple of recommendations of other pubs to try but these were either closed due to covid or were too far way. We decided to have a drink outside around 7.15pm and ordered food. Luckily the weather was okay to do this. When we were having our starters we overhead the table behind us being offered a table inside. We then asked the same waitress if we could also have a table inside. She advised we could move inside for our main course providing we didn't have an alcoholic drink which we understood due to the covid restrictions. We moved inside as it was warmer and enjoyed the rest of our meal. Whilst inside we learned there were 3 spare tables. We were perplexed as to why we were told we couldn't get a table after 5.45pm when we arrived when there was clearly enough space between 7-8pm when we had hoped to have dined in there. We appreciate there may have been cancellations but we felt the staff could have told us this as soon as they had some availability especially given it is a small hotel with 15 rooms and there were max 20 guests there when we were there. We feel there also needs to be clearer communication on the website that there is no guarantee of an evening meal in the restaurant and getting food may be a challenge especially due to the remote location and during the covid restrictions.
Overall it was a good stay and the staff did their best under the circumstances. We feel covid 19 restrictions may not have helped matters.

I really want to start this review on a positive note so first things first, the house itself is beautiful and the location is perfect. The grounds are very well kept, the gardens are stunning and the view is to die for. Is also extremely quiet, we had a great sleep both nights. The room was very charming and full of period features. We loved our 4 poster bed. We had a (very small) bottle of Prosecco in the room (I emailed in advance to book a table for my birthday night, or at least I tried to) and that was a nice touch.
Craig was an excellent host and made us feel very welcome.
Now for the not so positive points.
The food was not up to standard, unfortunately. On day one we ordered the traditional breakfast and the bacon was dry and tasteless. The portion was also very small. There was no cold/continental breakfast in buffet style, only toast, some teeny tiny croissants and packet juices.
On day two I ordered the “Pain perdu” and it was inedible, extremely hard and dry, with no flavour. My partner ordered the tradicional breakfast again and because he asked for baked beans, he was then served only one slice of bacon instead of two. For dinner I ordered the trout and unfortunately is was overcooked. For dessert I ordered the peach Melba and when it arrived I was very confused, not able to identify what on earth I was eating. The food was a huge let down for us. They are charging premium prices for below average food and that is not acceptable. The menu is hugely overpriced and the quality is shocking. We go to restaurants every week and are always willing to pay for good food but to pay more than £100 for a tasteless meal for two left us with a sour taste in our mouths. Also, it was my birthday and even though my partner told the restaurant assistant, no effort was made to make me feel special. Not even a happy birthday.
We have the feeling they are short staffed as well, because we had to book our dinner 3 times until it was confirmed. We sent two emails and got a reply saying the table was booked, then we booked it again during check in and on the day, when trying to adjust the dinner time, we were told that we had no dinner reservation. Very strange!
About the housekeeping department, on day one we left one towel on the bathroom floor (it was dirty and needed changing) and when we came back we realised it wasn’t changed, it was folded and put back. The towel on the floor is an universal housekeeping sign that that towel needs to be changed so we were surprised to see a dirty towel folded back. There was also a spider and a few cobwebs in the corner of the room, we live in the country so spiders do not bother us but it might bother some people so they should clean the rooms a bit better.
I read a lot of reviews and it seems this hotel was great and the food was lovely a while ago. I’m not sure what happened but it’s not like that anymore. The attention to detail needs to come back and they certainly need to improve the kitchen team.

A large hotel and located just enough out of it to be a quiet but close enough to amenities that you may need.
Staff are some of the best that I have ever come across in any hotel, from house keeping staff to front of house, amazing welcoming and just there for the guests. Never an ounce of bother any requests or interaction, a credit to the hotel and certainly increase the feeling about the hotel.
The room, 16 was larger welcoming and really cosy, the mattress may need replacing as was a little lumpy in places, but did not hinder the sleep.
The room was not warm with the central heating but a log electric fire was in the room to help boost the heat, so always cosy.
Very quiet not a sound apart from the storm ripping through outside, which is not hotels fault.
Breakfast was good of very high quality, the only item that did not fit in with the quality was the sausage but hey rest was amazing.
The meal on Saturday night was out of this world and again staff made the evening something else, credit to the hotel yet again. Unfortunately no meals available on the Sunday night but Helensburgh was close enough to go and get something to eat.
We had two dogs with us and again staff spoiled them rotten and couldn’t do enough for them as well as us, well done to the hotel for that.
Would I recommend this hotel, yes amazing room and location and yes we will be back again as it was that good
Thank you to all the wonderful staff for the weekend you all deserve a pat on the back for the way you look after guests as well as the hotel.

My wife and I enjoyed an overnight stay at Knockderry House on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis. We have stayed previously and were not disappointed on our return. We were welcomed by a friendly lady on reception who showed us to room number one which has a four poster bed, roll top bath and stunning views over the loch. We found the bed to be really comfortable. Dinner was fabulous, sitting to the side of the open fire and the waitress (Laura) was friendly and knowledgeable with regards the menu. The cooked traditional breakfast was also first class.
This is a boutique hotel with individually styled rooms in a stunning location. A real get away from it all break.

Visited in mid October as could not go to Turkey. Upgraded to room with good view over the Loch. Scotland in covid restrictions so no alcohol inside, was not an issue as there was service outside and to your room. Friendly attentive staff and food throughout was well loved and the souffle was mmmm. Slight issue with room radiator and this was sorted immediately. Great breakfast choice and friendly team offering the choices and friendly service. We enjoyed a cuppa and scone outside, each afternoon,
this was served with jam and cream. Thoroughly recommend our visit and thank you for the stay, service and very friendly staff and owners.

My friend and I were met by their Mensa memory receptionist and general wizard, Laura. And everything was excellent from there onwards. Dinner was a dream, our room was delightful and beautifully decorated. Twin room configuration meant that our single beds were only 2'6" wide, but they were extremely comfortable with fine quality linen and feather and down duvets: gorgeous. Nothing was left to chance by the staff who were attentive, efficient and cheerful without being 'in your face' or obsequious. Beautiful dining room furniture with snow white table linen, and the sitting room is gorgeous: generous, engulfing arm chairs and a marvelous 'feel'. We were sad to leave. Dinner was excellent from the Lieper menu, and breakfast was delicious. Having travelled across a lot of country and stayed in many hotels this holiday, the Knockderry House was by far and away the best and not the most expensive by a very wide margin. Simply glorious

My husband and I stayed here during our 2 week tour around Scotland. Unfortunately we were only able to stay one night. The views from this Hotel are amazing. The our room was on the top floor and we did not view a view of the water but the room was quite large and very comfortable. The bathroom was small but it did have a separate socking tub. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Rosie the Inns Mascot dog was wonderful. She even came up to the library and sat with us while we waited for our table to be ready for dinner. Raquel helped us with our luggage and then she was our waitress at dinner. She was excellent.
The food was outstanding. The fish was fresh caught and the desserts were also fabulous. The dining room is quite beautiful. We felt like we were dining in a Castle. Breakfast is included and that was also very good.
We would love to stay here again the next time we visit Scotland.
