Our first stop at a camp saver camp as nzmca members We were so impressed with the friendly welcome and all facilities which were sparkling clean. Free wifi, free hot showers, use of full kitchen, bbqs, dump station, use of laundry facilities were an added bonus. Thank you.

A small but friendly camp site, we were
In a campervan and the space was roomy. We stayed mid-week and the camp grounds were very quiet and the facilities very clean.
The management were friendly and arriving late was not to big a deal for them - which we were
grateful about.

Booked in for a camp site for a pop top caravan at Rotorua family holiday park by the family units (which my brother and sister where occupants - and booked at the same time) for my son and I. On arrival I was given a camp site that was for a camper. When I spoke with the office, the lady was apologetic and I requested a spot we could fit in, or to the family unit car park to be close with my family. The office accommodated my request, and we parked on the grass next to the unit.
The facilities are really run down. The fenced pool area’s garden is unkept, and the cobbles uneven and covered in weeds (I have disabilities and nearly tripped over and not accessible for a wheelchair user).
The toilets by the family unit don’t have showers, and the TV room/ air hockey room has multiple things out of order for the children and it’s unusable.
The playground is suitable for younger children under 7. But not for over that ages group.
We had dogs with our group which was pre-organised and approved, the one time they barked (as a trolley was being pulled on the gravel next) we were given a stern talking too, and advised they are a quiet park and they do not accept dogs to bark.
We lost the wifi code during the move in, and my 9yr old son and 10yr old niece went to the office to request a replacement, but the office staff advised “it wasn’t their problem” - the children returned upset and scared requesting to leave the holiday park.
The washer & dryer units are gold coin only, ensure you take these with you as the office hours are not before 8.30am.
Don’t be fooled by the word “family” in the name.
Definitely will not be returning.

I am a travel agent (15+ years) & have stayed in accommodations both across NZ and internationally. My goal is to enjoy as many different accommodations and share my experiences in order to promote places for my clients. Travelled with my sister in law, partner and 4 kids 8, 10 and 13 (between us) I have never stayed in a campground before claiming to be “family friendly” that hasn’t delivered. If you have kids do not stay here. My kids felt like they couldn’t even go to the playground or make any noise let alone laugh in fear of being growled so hid in our cabin. The woman in reception scared my 10yr old snapping at her that “it wasn’t her problem” that we had misplaced a wifi code and politely asked for a replacement. She was in tears because she wanted to leave and no longer felt safe. Disgusting. Games room was just an out of order hockey game and couches. Mould on the curtains in the rooms, cockroaches in the oven, white stains on a duvet & filth around the window sills. It was disappointing towels aren’t provided but admittedly we were made aware of this. I would never recommend staying here and will send clients with families to other camp grounds of superior cleanliness and with better family facilities. False advertising BIG time. So disappointed. Only gets one star because the lake down the road was within walking distance and I liked the room layout.

I stayed in a one bedroom unit. Very clean and all the amenities you need with a well equipped kitchen area, large bathroom and generous lounge/dining area. Friendly hosts and lovely and quiet when I was there. Easy walk to town and 2 minutes to the lake. Unsure about the shared amenities but my unit was great value and perfect for what I needed

Such friendly, welcoming, informative hosts! Thanks Dianne and Reece for having us! We recently stayed 1 night at Rotorua Family Holiday Park and it was great! Great tidy camping spot for our van, pristine grounds, very clean facilities, recently refurbished by the looks of them and the hosts were so nice! Just a 2 min walk to the Lake and fishing is epic right now!! Highly recommend! The pool was fun too!

We stayed there for a night with our van. Very friendly welcome. All facilities are in good shape and clean. Very clean. Very quiet. Hot showers, BBQ free access. Free wifi. Closed to the city. Closed to the lake where you can swim. Perfect spot for a stopover.

Whilst it is reasonably good value for a holiday park in the Rotorua area, that’s where it ends. When you consider all the factors, it turns out that it was actually pretty poor value for money. We were just looking for somewhere to rest our heads for a few nights during our tour of the north island, so expectations were not especially high. Having said that, you expect the basics in any hospitality establishment where you are a paying guest. Sadly these were not met.

This family run business has none of the warmth and charm we are used to. In particular one of the owners and managers, was surly and rude from the get go. Having worked in the hospitality and tourism industry for seven years, I believe I have a good understanding of service levels. It is no exaggeration to say that this was way beyond sub-standard. This became apparent from check-in when he greeted us.

All was fine until I asked about the WiFi situation. It materialised that whilst they overtly advertise ‘free WiFi’ this is somewhat misleading. Guests are given a finite WiFi voucher for their stay, and once this runs out, you have to purchase top up vouchers. As my partner and I both have online jobs, this was a little disappointing and something that could quickly become costly. One of the reasons we selected this camp was it’s free internet and it was also something I checked before we arrived. When i asked about this, he immediately became defensive and curt. He told me that it is ‘free’ internet if only to a certain MB and that I should be grateful as we’d got a ‘free night’ courtesy of their online offer. I thought that this was an usual way to welcome a guest, special offer or no special offer. To add insult to injury, the WiFi was extremely poor throughout our stay - to the point that it dropped off every 30 seconds. As you can imagine, we didn’t get a lot of work done! Instead we invested in coffees and used the WiFi at a cafe in town, as it was high-speed and reliable. It is a blatant misrepresentation to advertise free high-speed internet, based on our firsthand experience. On the plus side, perhaps he did take some notice, as the next day the enormous ‘free internet’ sign, which was unashamedly plastered outside the front entrance, miraculously disappeared.

It should also be said that this gentleman, despite being ‘front of house’, is very much off-duty when he’s not behind the desk. Even if you have a problem with the facilities and there is no one else to ask, he will be personally offended by the disruption. I believe that this is part and parcel of any type of paid for accommodation/host role. It seems like the running of the camp is a bit of burden for him. I also met some other guests in the kitchen, who echoed these sentiments.

On a separate note, but similar theme, the camp advertises itself as ‘pet friendly’. All I can say is that this is total nonsense. For dog owners out there - do not bring your four-legged friend here. I am afraid, despite the website propaganda, that they will not be welcome. Of course we were not aware of this when we booked, in fact we reiterated over email with the manager and his wife, that we would indeed be bringing our little cavalier King Charles Spaniel and they confirmed our booking in the standard cabin. So, you can imagine our surprise when he announces to my partner that dogs are not allowed in cabins and he has no idea how we got away with it. He also says dogs must be on a leash at all time and never left alone in the cabin at any time. Curious that he was trying to sell us a white water rafting package earlier that day -funnily enough we didn’t pack the dogs life jacket for this trip!!

I was extremely confused as to why he was claiming the following:

- That he did not know we had a dog with us
- That the cabins are not pet friendly
- That they had no prior knowledge of us bringing a pet
- That they really don’t like having dogs on the campsite anyway - and try to avoid it as much as possible

In response to these claims, I showed him the following:
- An email exchange between myself and him in which I enquire about the cabin and explicitly state that we are bringing our dog
- His confirmation of our booking in reply to this
- The section on the website that states that the standard cabins are pet friendly
- The line which says pets can be brought with prior arrangement (i would have thought an email was sufficient)

As you can imagine, he wasn’t particularly pleased by his own contradictions and it did not improve the already dismal service we were receiving. Overall I’d recommend people to think twice about staying here. If In anyway you have the misfortune of getting on the wrong side of this unpleasant man, then you can say goodbye to the fun relaxed break you had in mind. In my opinion, an honest advertisement of this holiday camp would be:

'A DIY holiday park, with limited low-speed intermittent WiFi, pet un-friendly and resentful of guests claiming their special offers'.

It is such a shame to have to write such a negative review, but on the positive side TripAdvisor do gives guests the opportunity to have a voice and share their feedback, so that other people can make an informed decision on where to stay. If anything, in this day and age when there are such platforms, it is a real surprise to me that good service wouldn't be at the forefront of any hospitality establishment.
