This place is a well kept seceret. The sites are top notch and back right on to the Medway River which is great for swimming and fishing. The falls and rapids provide a beautiful backdrop. The owner is incredibly friendly and helpful. We stayed at group site #2 with a group of friends and we felt like we were the only ones in the camp ground thanks to large amount of space on each site. There is wood avaiable at the owners lodge. The outhouses are incredibly clean as well. Would recommend to anyone who wants to avoid the busier p

What a dump. The website and what is actually there are total opposites. Not RV friendly, lots of damage done to my truck and RV trying to get out. No one around on our check in date. Down power lines, garbage all over roads and run down buildings. Had exchanged emails with owner and he had multiple opportunities to tell us not to come with fifth wheel, instead we are on the hook for $2000 in damages due to poor maintenance at Bear Falls Wilderness.

A friend and i wanted to go camping but most campsites weren't open for the season yet. Discovered this place when i was searching for winter camping. Could find very few reviews. All reviews except one i found was positive so figured we would try it out.
Didn't have a problem finding the place. From the main road you travel a little way, hang a right and the road turns into a single lane the rest of the way in. Terrain was a little rough, there were fairly large rocks, downed trees that were very close to the road and some deep dips you had to watch out for. If you have to reverse keep an eye out for tree stumps you might not notice the first time. You pass a few cabins (including a cabin with an entire wall missing), a couple of houses, and then reach the final house.
Being careful to drive around the chickens that run loose, we stopped at the house. A sign on the door said the owner would be back at 3 and to take the left road. We parked and walked instead to scout the area.
We found the cabin we were staying in no problem. The cabin is maybe 50 to 75 feet downwind from his house. The cabin was unlocked, so we looked around. The first thing i noticed was that it had a tv with an assortment of VHS tapes. It doesn't have curtains, but it has a bed and a vintage looking hide-a-bed couch. It's a well built building, with a deck and picnic table. It has a propane bbq on the deck as well, so that was a nice option.
We had a look in the firepit and unfortunately there was a bit of a mess left by the previous guests. We cleaned the beer cans and ashes out of the pit and rearranged the toppled stones surrounding it as best we could and started to unpack the vehicle.
After setting up our camp we had a look around the place. The view of the falls is absolutely stunning! Just beautiful. We saw a couple of ticks on us so we changed into more appropriate tick area clothing.
We checked out the outhouse as well, the smell of urine was very strong. I didn't see a container with lime or bleach around so there was nothing we could do about it. There was also a bucket to the left of the toilet inside the outhouse that looked as if it's been there for quite some time. Old stagnant water filled it, an old air freshener and an awful surprise was floating in the water (not poop if that's what you think). We turned back to the cabin to wait for the owner to return. I spotted a broken garbage bag in one of the tent sites and trash that littered the area from the wind blowing it around, made a mental note to let the owner know of that as well.
After a bit the owner, Carl Shannon, drove in. He came over to introduce himself and we let him know about the beer cans we cleaned, the broken garbage bag with litter in the area and about the outhouse. During our conversation, we spoke about the area, the falls, the wildlife and that he was just dropping off his fiance to the airport so that was why he arrived a little later than the note said. We told him that we thought the cabin was very cute, shared some beef jerky with him and he went back to his house. A half hour or so later 2 of his 3 dogs came down into our camp. They started doing their business in the camp area so i ushered them back up to the house where we saw Carl again. He was telling us of his fiance and how she was asking who was staying here in her absence. He asked if he could take our photo to send it to her, we said sure. He took the photo, showed us, and while talking again he slipped the phone in his pocket. I asked him about sending the photo and he said his fiance is on the plane now so she wouldn't get it yet, he'll send it later, then made the comment he can delete the photo if we want him to. We declined, told him it was fine, but looking back on the event it really bothered me.
We parted ways and we headed back to the cabin where we enjoyed a nice fire. Carl came by with firewood, and he disposed of the bucket in the outhouse.
The evening went by too fast, we enjoyed drinks by the fire, a fisherman who lives across the river gave us a fresh slice of trout he just caught. It started to rain as it got dark so we turned into bed for the night. We set up on the floor, mostly because i wanted to try out my new camping gear, but also because Carl didn't offer to change the bedding in the cabin. From what we understood there were guys staying at the cabin the previous night, Carl had to go out and they were still there to leave at their own time, leaving Carl no time to tidy up between guests. Carl said was not impressed with how they left things.
Throughout the night the rain fell, i slipped on a wet rock heading to the bathroom once, and saw a mouse run across my path once. I'm very glad we packed all of our food up for the night, gotta watch for those little critters!
The next morning, i woke up to the beautiful sound of the falls and of the turkeys on Carl's property. I fixed up some coffee, was soon greeted by one of Carl's dogs who proceeded to do his business in the camp area again. He wandered back to the house, and i finished up my breakfast.
We decided to cut our two night stay to one. The dogs peeing in the area, the seemingly lack of lime use in the outhouse, the days old pile of dog poop i found by the cabin and the garbage that was still strewn about the area were enough for me. We also felt awful from all the drinking (bad on us) and i ran out of motrin so we packed up camp and tried to leave it in better shape than we found it in. We said our thank yous and goodbyes to Carl, and we departed.
I would love to recommend this place, because the falls and the secluded get away is just perfect! It felt like the place was very hands off with the upkeep. I probably should've taken matters into my own hands and cleaned the garbage up and taken the ladder back to Carl's house that was by our campsite but i was there to relax, not clean up after people. Will not be going back.

Bear falls wilderness was exactly what I was looking for. I was too overtired to hike, but needed to sleep outside, actually in the woods and found this spot. It was perfect. I wanted the backwoods but didn't want to hike and I can't standing "campgrounds" packed with RV's and row tenting. This is not that. It doesn't have playgrounds, heck it hardly has parking. If that's what you want, DONT GO HERE. It's rustic. Campsites are large and private. My dog was able to be off leash. The owner Carl was friendly, and laid back and has 3 chocolate labs roaming around. Wild chickens. I saw a bald eagle soar above my head as my pup and I swam in the river. Hiking trails. Fishing. A true hidden gem. Highly recommended if you actually want to be in nature and fall asleep to the sounds of the river falls. Will be back.

This is not your typical campground and I am sure you will never find anything quite like it anywhere else. I'll try to describe it as best as I can below, but you really need to go to fully appreciate this place.
It's located, literally in the middle of nowhere, along side of the Medway River (the largest river in Nova Scotia) and once you start down the long and narrow "driveway" you'll begin to wonder "where the heck am I going?", but keep going, you won't be disappointed. The drive in is about 5-10 minutes with thick dense forest around you. You'll eventually come across a house which belongs to the owner and you may very well be greeted by him and his dogs or you may not be. He might not even be there! If he's not there, just go pick out a site and he'll eventually come find you.
The sites are mostly walk-in sites, heavily treed and natural, but there are some that you can drive right up to. The walk-in is are not that far, so don't be dissuaded. (you can see your car from the site). The sites are varied, huge and private. They are literally the size of 5 regular camp sites. And the river is right beside you. In some spots the river is raging and in some spots it's calm enough to go for a swim. There is a small cabin you can rent too if you'd rather not throw a tent up.
Don't expect a playground or a canteen or an actual office. Don't expect bundled wood. There is wood you can chop yourself, but often it's a bit wet. There is a store nearby that sells wood, groceries, gas and alcohol if you need supplies. There are no bathrooms, but there are outhouses. In the morning you might be greeted by one of Carl's dogs looking for bacon. Carl might even drive you up the river and drop you off in a dinghy and you can float back to the camp site. If you like fishing you can do that too here. There's not that much to do here, so you have kids and are looking for activities then this might not be the spot for you. If you want to relax and listen to the river go by then this place is awesome. There is a small park and lake a few minutes down the road where you can swim. I recommend having a beer with Carl, he's an interesting guy.
This is wilderness camping. No fancy stuff here. Just go. It's an experience, to say the least.

I have gone camping twice at this camp ground and it was lovely! Camp sites are not too close together, so it gives you a wildernessy feel. Which is nice bc not all the time do you want to stare at your camping peeps. LOL They have nice shower and washroom facilities. And a cool book you can sign and leave comments. People from all over the world have camped at this little gem. Your sites are along the Medway river which is very scenic and nice to relax by. Cocktail in hand.
