I have just spent a few days in this lovely place…. A delightful finca with a variety of attractive buildings and active stables housing fabulous Lusitano horses. The atmosphere is welcoming, the accommodation clean and comfortable and we had a delicious Brazilian meal in the restaurant. Marchanta is ideally situated for day trips to Lisbon; a train from nearby Walk up the river for a meal in the sleepy town of Vallada with a sandy beach on the banks of the Tagus and views across to Bird island. Direct trains form Reguengo station (less than 5minutes drive way) take you directly to the Santa Apollonia station in the heart of downtown Lisbon in less than an hour. Walk from there around the cobbled streets of the Alfama district and up to the St George Castle for panoramic views over this magnificent city.

I had to catch a plane from Lisbon and to find a place to stay for a couple of days and was told about this Hotel , only 45 minutes from the Airport. It is in a beautiful setting , next to the River Tagus and a boat trip on the river where I saw an Osprey and across to a very nice Restaurant in an old fishing village on the other side was part of the Hotel experience, taken by the lovely Magdalena. The rooms are really top quality, there are a couple of two bedroom separate suites and a house, also really nice. A bar and huge games room, table tennis and a really lovely pool. Diogo runs the Restaurant so I just had to say when I wanted a meal and the food and wine on offer were excellent. It was a thoroughly relaxing couple of days and just to be in the sun with blue skies, not to hot was such a treat. I also think that the Buildings at Marchanta are really lovely . I would like to return with my family.

This rural farm will appeal to those who appreciate the relaxed and dignified Portuguese way of life and who seek peace and quiet in a quality setting The old house, build in 1877, has been considerably well maintained by the owners which gives it great charm. Near river Tejo, and only at 3 km from the village of Valada, the landscape is lovely, tamed by agriculture ambiences. In the village there’s a small marina with boats and kayaks to rent. The warmth welcome from the owner was genuine and our hostess did everything to make sure that our stay was enjoyable. Our complete apartment was beautifully decorated and the beds were extremely comfortable. Breakfast was great with fresh fruit, local hams and cheese, bread, conserves and cakes. It was a delight and magnificent one with plenty of choices. Adorable dogs on the property which children could interact with. The property as a big swimming pool to relax by after a day of sightseeing, hiking, biking or horse ride. There are some adorable dogs on the property which children can interact and play with. We would highly recommend staying at Quinta da Marchanta and we we’ll return again for a longer stay.

When I arrived without notice I rang the doorbell. Many dogs will come barking and keep their distance, they won't bite. The owner came up and she told me that there is room available. Me, as a backpacker staying in pensions and hostels, now this was something new. As a pelgrim I paid 20 euro for the night and she lead me to my stay. So not what I expected, I thought I got a room for that but no! In a door we go, its a livingroom with a complete kitchen, a staircase to go to the bedroom and bathroom with bath. The time stood still, all little details of the old days. Loooooved it! There is free wifi next to their house, so not in my quarters. The owner is very laid back and she took me to the local shop to get some food as I came walking :)

Recently taken over by new English owner who has revamped. I stayed in a lovely room in the hotel but saw the lovely spacious family apartments next door. Lisbon half an hour by train and you can arrange a car pick up. The village 20 minute walk away along the river has bars and restaurants and a beach with water sports popular with the Portuguese. My reason for going was to experience riding lessons from Nuno, a highly respected dressage instructor (fluent in english). He gives you lessons on his own Grand Prix dressage horses. I am somewhat rusty so went for one lesson a day for 3 days. Another guest, better rider and younger and fitter had 2 per day. Each private lesson costs around £68. Amazing value for the quality of the horses and quality of teaching with ear phones/microphone set up which works really well. I have ridden many horses over the last 50 years and have never sat on such talented horses. There is a newly built indoor school essential for the warm and very warm weather all year round.
Marchanta is a lovely place to unwind in whether horsey or not. On site refurbished outdoor poll, locally sourced lovely breakfast buffet. You can pick oranges off the trees to juice. Many guests go there on the Camino pilgrimage trail. Also heard there are some good local golf courses, so would workforce bunch of golfers with a hire car. Absolute hidden gem of rural Portugal surrounded by tomato farms yet close to Lisbon. I will be back soon

I stayed while painting and exploring the area, for five days in early May. The hotel has really comfortable spacious rooms, and lovely breakfast with freshly pressed orange juice from the tree in the garden,The hotel has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. There are beautiful horses in the stables and advanced riding instruction in a superb covered school and if you prefer a bicycle you can ride on the quiet roads near the river and through charming villages with lovely cafes.Exploring the cobbled streets of Santarem is delightful and the restaurants nearby had great local food and fish.We went on a boat trip on the river and saw a wonderful variety of birds. Don't forget your binoculars!

The apartments are gorgeous, they stayed nice and cool during the hot days.
The grounds are stunning. My 1 year old daughter especially enjoyed the orange trees!
The horses are just a dream and Nuno is a fantastic instructor.
We will definitely be coming back and would recommend to all!

A beautifully appointed small hotel with additional apartments in old farm and wine making buildings with adjoining stables housing fantastic Lusitano horses. The weather was perfect so we enjoyed bike rides along the river to the nearby village, Vallada, and through the National Forest reserve over the other side of the magnificent River Tagus. Returning to the Quinta we had fresh orange juice from trees in the courtyard outside our room followed by a welcome swim and relax by the pool. Our visit included a boat trip down the river to see a variety of birdlife including spoonbill, ibis and egrets and a quaint fishing village where the houses are built up on stilts. A great place to stay with comfortable rooms, fascinating surroundings and a warm welcome.
