I choose Waipoua Lodge as our last night location after 5 weeks touring NZ. It was the right decision. Ann and Fiona treated us like one of the family and their warm but thorough approach allowed us to chill and reflect on our wonderful tour. The meal was delightful and the spa pool just perfect. Definitely one to remember
We were so glad that we took up the recommendation of friends who had stayed at Waipoua two years before. The Lodge didn’t disappoint. We stayed in the Stables. The whole place was spotlessly clean, the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom luxurious. The food was excellent - a plentiful breakfast with beautiful poached eggs and the evening meals were very generous. Grace recommended places to go and arranged for a night time kiwi walk. We were so glad that we went on this as we saw our first kiwi. A real highlight of our trip to NZ. Thank you Grace, Jonty and Lily and our Best Wishes for the future.
This is a haven of luxury on the edge of the Waipoua Forest. The accommodation is first class and the hospitality from Grace and Jonty was excellent. A great location for exploring the ancient kauri trees in the forest. If traveling from the Bay of Islands stay on Highway 12 and travel through Opononi. Do not follow your satnav as this will direct you along 40km of unsealed gravel roads
The two kids running this place (Grace and Jonty) with their mum are very sweet but I wonder if hospitality may not be their calling. I hope that my feedback is helpful to them and, particularly, to other potential guests: To start, we were hungry the whole time. This is a bit of an issue because the nearest store or restaurant is about 45 minutes from the lodge. We ate dinner at the lodge our first night. I ordered the rack of lamb as my main, which came as only two ribs. I had a larger rack of lamb as a starter in Auckland last week and have had degustation menu servings far larger (on balance, the gingerbread dessert that followed was fabulous!). For breakfast the next day, we both ordered the “big breakfast” in which our sausage was replaced with a small serving of baked…
You will feel like you are staying with friends. Everyone we met was friendly, happy and efficient. We ate both nights in the common house as there is not too many choices nearby. Menus were perfect and all of the guests chatted amiably about their holiday places and recommendations. The waiter was humorous and efficient and willing to take the numerous questions I peppered him with - it was a jolly evening. The rooms were large and nice to have a seating room. Shower was powerful too. Beds were comfortable. Breakfasts were filling and varied. It really could not have been better!
