Detailed Reviews
My husband and I stayed here for two nights for his birthday and we had an absolutely fantastic time. We were the only guests staying and Ann & Fiona made us feel very welcome right from the beginning.
On our first night as we decided that we were going to find dinner elsewhere they recommend the local pub about 10 minutes south, which we very much enjoyed. Our full day at the lodge was very comfortable and relaxing with a fantastic home cooked breakfast, followed by a lovely bush walk and then relaxing time in the sun (suddenly there were seats in the garden, or on the porch ready for us). We explored the area, then returned to the lodge for a spectacular dinner prepared by our hosts. The food was fantastic and very very tasty, both breakfast and dinner and Ann and Fiona went out of their way to include anything extra that we asked for.
Our room was very comfortable and spacious with lots of little homely treats to make us feel welcome. The main attraction for us was the spa pool, which we constantly used and throughly enjoyed.
We definitely recommend this place to everyone, it was well worth the cost and we will be back. Thank you Ann and Fiona for making us feel so welcome and for helping us celebrate my husbands special day.

After lockdown and days of cold wintry rain - we needed a break. A couple of days being cosseted in elegant surroundings, with good food, beautiful scenery, and not too far way would be perfect. And so it turned out!
Anne and Fiona looked after us like we were royalty making sure we had the time we dreamed yet judging the perfect moments for friendly chats and tales of the old lodge's own story among the magnificent kauri trees of the Waipoua Forest and its journey from a family-built homestead to international standard boutique lodge.
There are four, separate, individual accommodation suites, we stayed in The Stables. It has a well appointed lounge, one bedroom with a very large comfortable bed and quality linen, a large bathroom and huge bath.
We'll look forward to our return to tranquility base! Either to bliss out away from wet wintry weather or to enjoy crisp sunny days in the gardens, the spa pool, the forest or on the famous west coast beaches.

I could be writing a horror story.....it was a dark and stormy night, the phone was out, flood waters lapping at the side of the road, the only sound came from the kitchen, and the room glowed orange due to the roaring fire..... and its all true, except it was far from a terrifying experience!
We happened to be booked in to Waipoua Lodge in the week Northland had a 1 in 500 year flood event. We chose to continue with our plans, and we are so glad we did. We pretty much had the lodge to ourselves, the only company being our hosts Annie and Fi. And what great hosts! Friendly, hospitable, out of sight unless we wanted them, obliging without being pushy, and excellent company when we asked them to share the evening with us.
Moreover, they were the cooks, and pretty damned good! We enjoyed tasty locally styled cuisine, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented, ample portions - just right!! Our evening in the main lounge was perfect relaxation - fire, wine, chat.
Our accommodation was homely. Large spacious bedroom, an amply proportioned lounge, self contained dining amenities, and quality and comfort all around. Any of the 4 guest suites would have pleased us.
The large gardens, native bush outlook and easy walking tracks gave us plenty of scope to stretch when it was raining, and with the Waipoua Forest, Tane Mahuta, Kai Iwi Lakes and other outdoorsy stuff within easy reach it was surprisingly easy to fill our our 2 days.
Your cellphone wont work due to the location, but there is ample internet. So a perfect spot to tune out, feet up, read a book, take in nature, and rediscover that old skill of conversation.
What did i like most? Hopefully they run with the new spicy apple cake dessert they were experimenting. And Fi makes an awesome morning coffee.
What did i like least? Departing.
Would I stay there again? Damned right I would. Actually, we already made plans to.

After bugging out of Paihia, we proceeded to the West Coast of Northland and hiked down to Martins Beach, a lovely white sand strand just past Omapere. Heading South winding through the ancient Kauri Forest we landed late afternoon at the Waipoua Lodge. This petite, superbly managed accommodation is a large part of why travel is so fun. The place has a B and B feel with four separate luxurious guest suites. Our suite was neat as a pin, thoughtfully and stylishly furnished. Immaculate bathroom with great water pressure and a back porch looking out over a nicely landscaped exterior folding into a small rainforest. Your hosts are Ann and Fiona who could not be more welcoming or helpful. That help included churning out extra ice and soda water for pesky Americans who always seem to require both in great volume. The lamb dinner was exquisite opened with curried soup and ended with light cheesecake and sorbet. Ann secured us the best red vino we have had to date (Australian). Post sunset we wandered down to a privately located hot tub for a night cap to scour the starlit skies for the Southern Cross. Breakfast was equally fabulous. We have a month to travel this gorgeous country and there will be other high points but our stay at Waipoua Lodge will always count as highly memorable.

Ann and Finoa are great hosts. Both know who to cook really well and all the food was spot on. This is really important as the lodge is in a remote location and there are no other food options anywhere near by. The lodge is very well presented and there is good attention to detail.
We loved it and would strongly recommend it to others

Thank you and we are so glad you enjoyed your stay and the meals. It truly was our pleasure to host you and we thoroughly enjoyed all our conversations. Thank you also for the amazing chilli seeds which we hope will grow fruitfully at the Lodge, Ann's chilli sauce will get an extra hot kick!

You will feel like you are staying with friends. Everyone we met was friendly, happy and efficient. We ate both nights in the common house as there is not too many choices nearby. Menus were perfect and all of the guests chatted amiably about their holiday places and recommendations. The waiter was humorous and efficient and willing to take the numerous questions I peppered him with - it was a jolly evening. The rooms were large and nice to have a seating room. Shower was powerful too. Beds were comfortable. Breakfasts were filling and varied. It really could not have been better!

The hosts were very friendly and accommodating - they would go the extra mile to make your stay special and comfortable. They knew a lot about the surrounding walks and area which was helpful when making plans. The accomodation was beautiful and to a high standard. The food was delicious and everything ran smoothly. Would definitely send my friends there!

Amazing Lodge in a remote location, close to the Kauri forest and the beach. We enjoyed Tane Mahuta and the Kauri Forest walks, Trounson Kauri Park and Maunganui Bluff beach. We also had time to relax in the hot tub, read a book on our suite’s veranda overlooking the Lodge’s forest and wandered through the gardens. We are already planning a return trip to relax by the fire with a book.
The hosts, Ann and Fiona, were very friendly and accommodating - they stopped at nothing to make our stay special and comfortable. Their knowledge of the surrounding walks and area was so helpful for making our plans.
The food was delicious, think fine dining but with a garden to table feel about it.
Thank you for an fantastic break away, We will be back!

We were so glad that we took up the recommendation of friends who had stayed at Waipoua two years before. The Lodge didn’t disappoint. We stayed in the Stables. The whole place was spotlessly clean, the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom luxurious. The food was excellent - a plentiful breakfast with beautiful poached eggs and the evening meals were very generous. Grace recommended places to go and arranged for a night time kiwi walk. We were so glad that we went on this as we saw our first kiwi. A real highlight of our trip to NZ. Thank you Grace, Jonty and Lily and our Best Wishes for the future.

Our stay at Waipoua Lodge exceeded our expectations! The historic main lodge was beautiful and welcoming. We stayed in The Stables, which was spacious and private. Ann and Fiona were the perfect hosts, and went out of their way to accommodate us, including customizing the dinner menu to our choice and recommending walks of interest in the area. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and it worked out well to take our meals at the Lodge. The gardens were truly beautiful - thank you again Ann for touring us on the bush walk! We had a delightful stay and highly recommend staying here.
