Due to the fact that one of the guests is in the icu for covid we had to cancel our reservation. We already paid 3000 and more euros and the person on the phone (apperently a manager) didnt even let us talk, he was only repeating that we didnt comunicate anything before hand, thing that we did via booking.
Apart from the economical loss and and the lack of empathy from the personal, we had to feel sorry for the hotel because they were not able to rent out the apartment even though it was already fully paid.
Shame on you
We chose Hotel de la Chaussee (which is surprisingly only classified as 2 star) and were certainly not disappointed. The hotel was built in 1892, is family run, situated in the lower town and displays a typical Alps / chalet theme throughout with appropriate matching décor. Due to the age of the building, there are naturally no lifts and rooms are spread over a number of floors accessible by stairs. The proprietors were also extremely friendly.
We stayed in room 10, which was on the second floor and a good size, as was the bathroom which also had a bath. The room itself was extremely clean, nicely furnished with a comfortable bed, had wifi and local French TV programs. There was also free car parking available adjoining the hotel.
The hotel also has a lovely restaurant which offers the option of a three course menu or a la carte at reasonable prices. The food is naturally typically French and was both good quality and good portion. The only drawback is that the menu is solely in French and as the owners only speak a negligible amount of English, this could perhaps present difficulties for some people. Nonetheless, we managed to quite easily get by based on basic French learnt many years ago.
The breakfast provided was a continental style comprising basic pastries, varieties of breads, jams, yoghurts etc and was more than adequate.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay and would have no hesitation with strongly recommending.
The hotel is about 350m from the main Prorel gondola in Briancon leading to the large Serre Chevalier ski area.
Our rooms were no 7 and no 1 on the first floor ( opposite each other). The rooms are beautiful and so full of character. No 7 has a superking sized bed ( comfiest hotel bed I've slept in) and also a single. The rooms were very large with lots of lovely old wood, faux fur throws and cushions. They also had the advantage of large outdoor terraces with a view of the mountains.
Breakfast was excellent- lots of pastries/ breads/ cereals/ cakes/ ham eggs and cheese.
The restaurant was also very atmospheric and the food good with an excellent wine list. We did however find the menu a little limited- I think they need a small menu that changes daily though what they produced was very good with generous portions.
The family are lovely. They don't speak a lot of English but enough to get by. Nothing was too much trouble and pre dinner drinks were always served with crisps and/or olive tapenade and bread.
Would I go back..... Absolutely. Can't wait.
A previous reviewer said that they didn't think places like this existed any more (in the best possible way). I am so glad they do and this one is an absolute gem.
If you want clinical generic 4* this is not for you. If you fancy charm and atmosphere and a big welcoming smile then this place is right up your street. Enjoy!
"The apartment with mountain views is a two minute walk away from the hotel. It's well back from the main road so very quiet."Read full review
"We only experienced the top most room, however I would imagine all the rooms exhibit the same charm."Read full review
"Roos on the backside are quieter. Mind the staircase : no lift. Don't miss the hotel's restaurant"Read full review
