Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was a very convenient motel, close to Charles Fleming Retirement Village as well handy to shops, but was a lot smaller than we had expected. It was clean and comfortable, but with a queen and a single bed in the room, it would have been difficult to swing a cat in. Another short-coming was the absence of a table.
The hosts were friendly and efficient, but we thought the continental breakfasts @ $16.00/head were a bit steep.
Nobody had warned us about the proximity of the railway, though admittedly, we were not really aware of the trains after 11.00pm, but it would have been nice be forewarned.

Thank you to Frances and John for a great night's stay at the Kapiti Gateway Motel. Great communications due to a late arrival, thanks for turning the heater on to make the room warm and inviting after such a tough day (yeah right- living the dream) operating a Steam Locomotive on behalf of your Kapiti Neighbours - Steam Incorporated. A comfortable bed to recharge for the next day's Train operations. Clean and well-presented room - thank you both very much.

On arrival we found check in was easy and staff were friendly and helpful with restaurant recommendations. The room was extremely clean. Only recommendation would be black out curtains as room was light as soon as daybreak. Had an upstairs studio room, dated but perfectly fine

I only stayed one night the room was value for money, clean tidy and had a comfortable bed. I would happily stay there again next time we are in town. The owners were more than helpful, nothing was a problem and showed a genuine interest in my stay in Waikanae.

Stayed here for work recently, and was very satisfied. The owners were really nice, and I thought the place had a good feel to it. I've stayed in a lot of motels for work, and this is one of the best I've stayed at. Unlimited wifi is pretty handy too!

Very well run Motel in an area preferred by families for holidays. Frances and her staff have created a relaxed atmosphere for guests. Rooms are comfortable and well stocked with the basics. The Motel was full during my visit, quiet and with a good sleep quality. The owners deserve success with this venture.

Returning here after a few years found still a great place clean and tidy with friendly new owners.
Now much quieter with new motorway bypass.
Not a new motel by any means but comfortable with all the neccesities required for self contained etc.
Most enjoyable.

We chose what was supposed to be one of the better rooms - upstairs and larger with a 'view' of the countryside from the back. Both highly exaggerated! Still noisy depite away from the main road. Interior VERY shabby - looked like a cat had been clawing the sofa to bits. View was over the neighbours back yard - we could see them drying off after a shower in their bathroom from the window! Kitchen was terrible - fridge minute and couldn't fit our meagre supplies- basicaly just a cupboard on the wall. No benchtop or hobs for preparing food, tiny old fashioned microwave only. Standing heater only - we froze 5 mins after turning it off. Bed moderate, blankets and not cosy, no wardrobe space provided. Altogether poor value for money. I can't see how a place like this can advertise as 'qualmark 4 star'.

Response from kapitigatewaymotel, Owner at Kapiti Gateway Motel
Responded 25 Aug 2011
It has been a challenge responding to this review. It contains a number of untruths. There are strict guidelines around Management Responses - we can supply the facts about the room, the subject of this review: • Refurbishment was completed 8 months ago – interior repainted, new carpet, new curtains, new bathroom, 33” flat screen TV fitted. • The room is advertised with tea/coffee/toast facilities only, not intended for cooking. • Microwave full size and only 8 months old. • Fridge is a free-standing 115 litre standard size motel fridge with ample storage. • Room has a full size wardrobe that contains extra blankets and pillows. • 2400 kw heater is very efficient but must be kept on to be effective – a second heater also available in this room. • We agree sofa needs replacing. • We have been reluctant to renew bed because of feedback that it is very comfortable – this will now be reviewed. Bed has a cosy feather and down duvee. • The neighbouring residence can be partially seen from upper level units, but so too can the Tararua Ranges, which provide a scenic backdrop to our property, be clearly seen from every room. • Qualmark have rated us 4-star by their own rigorous standards – we are not self-rated. Russell and Viv are owner operators, live on-site and available at all times. Our aim is to always exceed guests expectations. Despite interacting with these guests during their stay, we were never made aware of their dissatisfaction. We would have been very happy to put right anything that was not up to their expectations – had we been given the opportunity, a free upgrade to an apartment with full cooking would have been the best option for these guests.

Arrived by foot, were taken well care of. Room was spacious and clean, with tv and well functioning free WiFi. Near grocery store and railway station.

Multiple hiking options in nearby Tararua ranges, and a beautiful river walk to the coast.

If you are driving into Wellington from the north and need a place to stay on the first night this is a good way to save some money. Rather than pay big city prices you can stay here and drive fairy comfortably into Wellington in the morning. There may be rush hour traffic early in the morning but we went in about 9 am and there was very little traffic by USA standards. Actually this town used to be jammed with traffic but since this section of the motorway/freeway has been opened there is almost no traffic in the town of Waikanae. Don't scoot down the motorway and miss this opportunity.

It is a clean and comfortable motel and the Kiwi owners are very helpful.
