Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Absolutely recommend. Such a nice location, with easy access to all the incredible wineries in the area. Helen and Dave were lovely, warm hosts who went above and beyond - I really enjoyed my stay here last week!

The Jolly Poacher Retreat is your home away from home, when travelling the Marlborough Region. We stayed for two nights, with our 4yo daughter, who loved exploring the beautiful gardens. We felt relaxed as soon as we arrived, Helen and Dave are very helpful and you'll certainly receive a warm welcome on arrival. The beds are comfy, lovely facilities, with all you need BBQ, microwave, plates, cups, tea, fridge, milk, coffee and please order the scrambled eggs for breakfast, delicious!! You'll relax by the warm heater inside, with a glass of Marlborough vino in hand, perfect after a days exploring!

As soon as we drove in to a warm welcome from Helen & Dave we knew we had picked a gem. There are 2 Beautiful little cabins (Hunting or Fishing themed) secluded away from the main house, perfectly appointed with King Size beds, a second bedroom with king singles, clean and spacious bathrooms, a great kitchen and separate lounge area. We loved the Hunters cabin. To top it off the breakfast prepared by Dave and Helen is just spot on. Super close to the wine region, we immediately decided to stay an extra day to relax. Dave and Helen are the perfect hosts and understand that sometimes you need help and interaction but also need your own space at other times. We have travelled a lot and highly recommend The Jolly Poacher as both a perfect location but also really good value for the whole experience at the property. Helen even gave us a few lemons from the garden as we left so we could have some lemon tea and water along our first few days. This will be our first choice of accommodation in the region when we return to NZ.

We had an amazing stay, was only one night, wished it was longer. We stayed in the Fishing Cottage and it was beautiful, the way it has been decorated, the feeling of home. The shower was amazing! The bed is so comfortable including the pillows, normally we take our own but now I want to go and buy their bed and pillows 😁 Dave and Hellen are the most beautiful people, so welcoming and happy. Our continental breakfast was perfect, poached organic eggs and the homemade jams and honey just gorgeous. Beautiful gardens, and loved Dave's man cave and their bbq area. Can't wait to visit again 😊

Our first experience at a farm stay and we were a bit worried it was a little out of town. It could not have been better from the beautiful surroundings and accommodation to the lovingly cooked scrambled eggs. Having stayed at many accommodations from top end hotels and lodges we just loved our entire experience loved at The Jolly Poacher thanks to our fabulous hosts Helen and Dave they are naturals to hosting ! Thank you so much for the wonderful time we had an absolute highlight of our many visits to NZ sorry we couldn’t stay longer

This is our second stay at The Jolly Poacher and it was just as fantastic as back in 2020. The cottages are in a country setting and beautifully appointed with very comfy beds, a full bathroom, comfy living area, air conditioning, great little kitchen/dining as well as outdoor seating. The breakfast was delicious and served right to our cottage door. We came to tour wineries and found dozens within a 15 minute radius of the property. Super Hosts Dave & Helly gave us great suggestions for which wineries to try as well as other places of interest & local activities. If you’re coming to this area, you just can’t beat the hospitality, quality and value for money at The Jolly Poacher!

We had a fabulous few days in the Hunting Lodge to end our holiday in the S. Island. Our hosts Dave and Helly were outstanding and no detail was overlooked. The grounds were beautifully kept, we had full access to the pool which the kids loved and a delicious breakfast was served each morning. (Helly’s homemade preserves and the fresh free range eggs really hit the spot!) We would love to return one day - it really was a very idyllic spot and wholeheartedly recommend it to others.

What luck for us! There was a last minute cancellation and we got the booking. Arrived after midnight to be greeted warmly by Dave and shown to our beautiful cabin. Walked in after a long trip and instantly felt relaxed and at home. Hot shower, crisp white sheets and all the amenities you would need. Wonderful hosts -definitely go back but would arrange to stay longer. 5 out of 5.
