Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Thoroughly enjoyed our short stay. Dave and Helly are great hosts that could not do enough for us, they immediately made us feel at home. This is a great place to stay, full of character and conveniently located near Blenheim, Picton and the Marlborough vineyards. Fantastic aircraft museum in Blenheim and lots of other activities in the area. Great communication when we changed our plans at short notice. Immaculately kept.
Breakfast was delivered every morning at the arranged time with amazing homemade jams and preserves, they also offer a range of evening meal options.
We really enjoyed meeting the animals!
This is a good place from which to explore the area, or just to relax, highly recommended!

We came for a relaxed weekend away and felt very spoilt in this lovely clean and comfy cottage. Our lively hosts were very genuine, friendly and accommodating. The location was perfect for us to go biking and then when we came home exhausted we could really relax in the most comfortable bed ever! I would definitely recommend that anyone stays here you will not be disappointed. We felt like we were really alone if we wanted but if we needed a little advice on where to eat etc we were made welcome and the suggestions were perfect. Would definitely stay here again - and soon I hope!

Close to Blenheim but very peaceful, in fact the neighbours are sheep and a cow.
Dave and Helen looked after us so well we would highly recommend staying at the Jolly Poacher.
When you pull up and park you are immediately struck by the absolutely beautiful garden with seats positioned in the shade in the rose beds.
There are two similar cabins. We were in the hunting one, the other is decorated as a fishing one. One big room with huge, firm and comfortable bed with excellent quality linen. The first night we slept for 11 hours!
The room has a TV and leather couches. A second bedroom has two single beds. The kitchen has a table, microwave and is fully equipped. There is a gas fire and air con.
Breakfast is delivered to your cabin- muesli, home preserved fruit, juice, toast and a range of condiments. Scrambled eggs are also offered. Beautiful!
One night we were surprised with crumbed mussel balls, another evening we ere given beautiful whitebait fritters and bread! 😀 ... another evening we were invited to their garden bar.

They are close to wineries, restaurants and walks.
Beautiful!!

We had a fabulous few days in the Hunting Lodge to end our holiday in the S. Island. Our hosts Dave and Helly were outstanding and no detail was overlooked. The grounds were beautifully kept, we had full access to the pool which the kids loved and a delicious breakfast was served each morning. (Helly’s homemade preserves and the fresh free range eggs really hit the spot!)
We would love to return one day - it really was a very idyllic spot and wholeheartedly recommend it to others.

Just incredible! Thanks to the guys at the Jolly Poacher for such an awesome, relaxing, and memorable stay. The cottage is set up fabulously with everything we could have wanted, and the extra touches were so appreciated - breakfast, home made cheesecake, I mean come on!!! But the highlight was definitely the personal drop off service they did for us when we got stuck, in their classic Ford. These guys really know how to treat guest and make them feel special. Best honeymoon stop EVER!!!!

Set in a tranquil, green setting within easy reach of all that the Blenheim area has to offer, The Jolly Poacher offers something different. Its detached, delightful hunting and fishing themed lodges contrast with the normal stark motel units. Very comfortable beds, breakfast based around fresh eggs from the retreat's hens and home made preserves. Add the marvelous welcome and hosting of owners Helen and Dave and you have an accommodation option that places it above the pack. Highly recommended.

Such a lovely place. Helen and Dave made our short stay very memorable. Kind and hospitable - us and our boys loved getting a tour of your gorgeous property. Highlights were the very comfy beds, rainfall shower, and the delicious scrambled eggs in the morning. Our only gripe is the fact we were only staying one night! Thank you so much and we'll be recommending you to all friends and family

This is our second stay at The Jolly Poacher and it was just as fantastic as back in 2020. The cottages are in a country setting and beautifully appointed with very comfy beds, a full bathroom, comfy living area, air conditioning, great little kitchen/dining as well as outdoor seating. The breakfast was delicious and served right to our cottage door. We came to tour wineries and found dozens within a 15 minute radius of the property. Super Hosts Dave & Helly gave us great suggestions for which wineries to try as well as other places of interest & local activities. If you’re coming to this area, you just can’t beat the hospitality, quality and value for money at The Jolly Poacher!

If you are looking for a place to chill out and relax in beautiful surroundings then this is it. The cabin we stayed in was a cleverly themed hunters cabin with vintage decor and modern amenities. The enormous bed gave us the best nights sleep since we had arrived in NZ. A delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs, home made preserves, bread and juice was delivered every morning. Our hosts, Dave and Helen, were very welcoming and gave us suggestions of places to visit in the area, some of which we would never have known about or found. We thought they were all excellent suggestions and worth the drive. Our only disappointment was that we had only booked 3 days and not more.

We stayed here for two nights at the end of a road trip around the South Island as a treat. What a great decision that was - it was a little bit of luxury, and we had a wonderful stay at this beautiful property. The accomodation is new, and contains everything you could possibly need. Extremely comfortable beds, nicely laid out spaces and beautifully decorated rooms. It was warm and cosy during the cooler nights. The garden is the real highlight. Just stunning and a very relaxing place to wander around. We were fortunate enough to be able to make use of the pool and the pool table which was much appreciated. Dave and Helen were really friendly and welcoming hosts and we felt very well looked after. This would be a great place to stay as an extended family, or with another family (there are two separate units tucked away in the garden) or for a special getaway.
Also worthy of note...... I accidentally overpaid as I'd forgotten that I paid a deposit. I didn't pick up on this, but was contacted by Dave a few days after our stay in order to give me a refund. I thought this showed great integrity.
We'd love to stay again sometime.
