It has many historical enchanting features, gorgeous woodlands, beaches and walled gardens with wildlife and spectacular bird watching. The Orkneys (ferry) are visible from the estate. There are garden temples, archways, libraries and open fireplaces all around. All suites have a private bathroom with or without an extra shower. All suites have their own fireplace, wood stove and luxurious sitting areas with magnificent views. Espresso, and organic tea facilities in each suite. Scandic cooking Chef Sabien prepares wonderful fresh meals with ingredients from our own gardens and meats and fish all locally sourced. Olrig is usually reserved for groups, but I was able to spend a night there as an individual due to the gracious flexibility of the Dutch owner. It was so much fun. The house is furnished in such a colorful and exhilirating blend of styles, and is big enough to get lost in, so at first you feel like an explorer just going from your room to the kitchen. And each time you see pictures, furniture and other objects that you like but didn't notice before. But soon enough you get your bearings and float around as if you've been living there for years. The hostesses, Elaine and Kathy, are very pleasant, informative, and give the house a lovely human touch. The verdant grounds contain lots of magnificent trees and greenery, rare in this part of Scotland.

Olrig is a great choice for something special, stimulating and memorable. I don't think you can get this particular combination anywhere else.

We had a delightful stay as my wife and daughter joined me on a business trip. It is set in an 1800 manor house with many rooms and beautiful grounds. Hans and Michele have done a wonderful job of making this a comfortable and welcoming place to stay.

A full breakfast was a great way to start the day!

As previous reviews suggest, you will either love it or hate it here.

This is an old building and the rooms have been designed around the space available, as such not all bathrooms are in bedrooms. The room we stopped in had 5 doors between the shower and toilet but that's part of the fun.

The decor wont be in everyone's taste but it is quirky and it is interesting. The place is spotlessly clean other than country creatures which you expect in somewhere so remote.

Cathy is an absolutely brilliant host. As the only guests there we got treated like royalty and got a tour of the house and gardens, the history is fascinating. Breakfast was stunning and dinner wasnt available but we had only booked B&B so Cathy gave us loads of options for dinner which were great recommendations.

As with many old houses dont be surprised if things go bump in the night ;-) it's all positive though!

We stayed there on 19 May 2016 - hopefully the owners will read this and introduce much needed improvements. Good points were comfortable bed, nice coffee machine and good shower gel. Bad points were many. The door lock did not work. No dinner (!) Even though we paid £195 for the stay. Worse still was the recommendation that we go to Mackay Hotel in Wick for dinner. On arrival at Mackay just after 8pm, they told us the kitchen was now closed, so we had to go to the nearby Weatherspoons pub and restaurant. Total taxi fare came to £60. No side table; no milk for coffee; I had to light a fire to warm the cold room after we returned from dinner. One coffee cup had clearly not been cleaned! The shower water pressure was painfully low. The shower room looked like a room in a house being built - the wall paper had been stripped off, but no replacement yet. Vegetarian breakfast - so no "Full English" here. Far too weird for me, and lacking basic amenities. Not at all commensurate with the price charged. I hope the owners view this as a "to do" list and swiftly get their finger out, for the sake of future guests. The place has great potential.

We spend 2 nights at Olrig House, a charming country estate and B&B. The rooms are beautifully decorated, with a lot of detail. Breakfast is generous, and Kathy brings a warm personal touch. The garden of Olrig House is very well taken care of, and stunning.

The only thing this hotel has going for it is the very friendly and helpful host.

The pictures on their website as well as the descriptors are not representative of the actual state of the estate.

The Manor is outdated and in serious need of repair. Every room is cluttered and dusty. There is no milk in the room for a morning coffee or tea and no en-suites.

No dinner was available and chef Sebian was nowhere to be seen.

Bathrooms and showers are shared with other guests which is not acceptable particularly for the money they charge.

We would have rated this place zero if it had not been for Elaine.

We do not recommend this hotel

This is, without doubt, one of the most charming B and B's I have ever stayed in. The setting is stunning, and house and grounds and gorgeous. Every room is decorated with such style - and yet we were made to feel welcome and to treat the house as a home from home. The breakfast was wonderful - the table laid out like a work of art. It's a bit more expensive than most hotels in the area but an experience like this is worth supporting. We enjoyed a meal in the local Hotel in the evening - simple pub food but very tastey and friendly service.

What a wonderful find on our trip around the North Coast 500. After driving from Inverness we were enveloped in the quirky luxury that is Olrig House. Friendly hosts, beautiful rooms, a good recommendation for dinner and a truely fabulous feast for breakfast. I highly recommend it.

We overnighted at Olrig house and arrived in the late afternoon. It's expensive but quite unique and different from most other establishments. Our room was very comfortable, spacious and comfortable with the bath in a corner of the room. We had a great view through large windows into the gardens. We didn't particularly like the fact that the toilet is just outside the room in the hallway but we were assured it was only for our use and this was true. The welcome from Michelle and the team was warm and friendly and I particularly enjoyed drinking a glass of excellent Lebanese red wine and chatting with Michelle about the history of the establishment and the hard work that they have done to convert the house from a residence into a quirky boutique hotel. Breakfast was excellent. Would strongly recommend this if you are looking for somewhere that is comfortable and very different from the normal run of the mill establishments.

Olrig asked a question Jul 2015

Dear both (reviews) My name is Michele Dinger and I am the owner of Olrig House. We have made a grave mistake, actually I did, my husband and the staff did not. I did and am very very sorry, very sorry for your inconvenience. Please let me explain; The double rooms do share a toilet/bathroom as it says on the website and only the actual suites all four bar one of them have a toilet in the suite as well as a beautiful bathroom. We kept them large for the joy of space. However, i booked them wrong. I never do the bookings (now you know why) my husband does and never makes a mistake. As we were on holiday in France, and he was busy with the children, i did and made a grave mistake, im very sorry. The other guests staying there were engineers (not ours) whom i by accident had put in the wrong rooms hence the email confusion. Im just sad you didn't let the staff take car of you and help. I heard they tried by inviting you to the living room offered fruit and refreshments whilst they tried to fix this to show their care and their hospitality. I wish you had slept there, seen the grounds and enjoyed the delicious breakfast in the morning. There are no construction workers staying on our property, there are those working downstairs to restore this 200 yr old ruin the last ten yrs which is not used now for guests. As for the locks, we are all waiting for the locks . As we are in the North and restoring everything with Victorian hand forged locks etc, we are still waiting since we opened for the public in May, I am sorry for that. We do have keys for those that ask, for the temporary locks, but the front door is always open as we have a small, select number of guests, very trustworthy staff and workers and in the last 10 years of renovation - the only person who has ever been locked out was myself. So I gave up, as we have such wonderful guests , staff and workers we do have a laid back air of openness for missing that I am so sorry we couldn't give you our usual hospitality. You are welcome and your partner who writes below its hard to find, (we will follow up on that too) but if you do, we will cover all your expenses and make up for the wrongly booked rooms. Thank heavens my husband is back and again I am so sorry as the Scots are famous for their hospitality, and though I am not, I hope you know they most certainly are. In humble apology, Michele Dinger
