On our 4 week tour of NZ we visited Kaikoura and stayed in the Tree house lodge. It was very different from all the rest so far. The space is good and comfortable and the views lovely over the deer farm.
The Food is included and the diners were nice, varied each day. The dining room area is quite nice and the service is very attentive.
We went on the whale watching which everyone does and this was fun and we saw one sperm whale and the hector dolphins which was special.
We were staying for 3 nights which was fine I would not have wanted to stay longer. We have tree house number 1 which had just been refurbished it had a “ toilet out of the world “ it was one of those does all for you !! A bit strange but also nice once you got use to it!
They did a big bag of laundry for us for $35 which was very handy and all washed lovey.
The one thing I found annoying was the curtain you pulled across at night and the one that went over the kitchenette also covered the air on unit so it could not cool the room at night !! If only they had made the curtain only pull back from this it would have been fine. But only being their 3 nights it was ok !
It certainly was a different experience.

Decided to wait until the end of our NZ trip to provide our reviews. We stayed at some of the best accommodations in the South Island. As it turns out, Hapuku Lodge is the standard by which we judge the rest of the places we stayed. The owners of Hapuku Lodge understand that the details matter. They have every aspect dialed in beautifully from the gorgeous interiors to the tech systems to the amazing food. We are plant-based and the food was seriously some of the best we have ever had. The service was excellent especially Eliska (from the Czech Republic). We had been looking forward to staying at Hapuku for years and it met or exceeded expectations.

Regarding Kaikoura itself...give some thought as to whether you need to do the whale watching trip....many people get sick on those boats and your experience with the whales might be minimal. We did not get sick but many folks do. Kayaking: we would recommend the pedal kayaks vs the paddle kayaks....you have more strength with your legs and you will have your hands free to take photos.

Easily the Best places we’ve stayed, on our 1 month tour of New Zealand

This Lodge oozes class and good design as soon as you enter the front door.

We stayed in the Hapuku Lodge Room on the second floor which had views on three sides which included spectacular mountain views.

The room had a lovely deep bath and many other top class touches which included a free mini bar.

Dinner was outstanding with a selection of 3 Starters , Main Courses and Desserts , small choice but all were fab.

Breakfast is my gauge of a good hotel and that was great as well.

I can not fault this Lodge and the only place to stay if you are going to watch the brilliant Marine Life in Kaikoura.

On our whirlwind, nine stop tour of New Zealand, the Hapuku Lodge was by far the most restful, restorative stop on our way. Not only did we GREATLY appreciate that our treehouse had a lower level beautifully appointed for our three kids, our room had every amenity. I could look our over the deer or olive grove all day. I really enjoyed the guide in the room to all of the woods used from around the works. Artful, thoughtful touches were everywhere. Fabulous landscaping.
I consider the price of the lodge to be reasonable, especially if you subtract both breakfast and dinner. Those two meals were world-class, fantastic, and the best we had in New Zealand (for all of us including the 10, 12, and 40 somethings. The 5 year old peacefully slept through it. Kindly, staff packed a dinner for him to take back to our room).
I was sad to leave after only one day, especially when we realized we had a LOT more to explore in Kaikoura. But for our first visit, it was a joy to experience briefly, and we’ll be back.

The detail in the Lodge is wonderful. It is sumptuous, quiet and feels very well insulated from the outside. We stayed in a Lodge room and it was fantastic. A separate lounge which was great for staring at the snow capped Kaikoura ranges and a Japanese soaking bath for 2 in a huge bathroom.
The staff were very friendly and all remembered names of guests which is impressive.
The food was good, but we were expecting a changing menu each day as it said on the website but the menu remained. We ate there 2 nights running and that was probably enough. Good wine selection in the restaurant, but the ambience was very different from the rest fo the lodge. The guest lounge was a fabulous place to get a pre dinner drink by the roaring fireplace.
Cookies in the room were a nice touch.

We had an amazing 3 night stay in the Kotare tree house and enjoyed sublime hospitality from the staff. The view of the mountains was beautiful, while watching the robins bob around in the tree branches, the furnishings were luxurious, and the Japanese toilet was quite a highlight. It was a very warm room so even in winter we didn’t need the ac on at all. Heated bathroom floor might be why it was so cosy. If you want an outing, it’s only a 7 minute drive to Kaikoura but we spent most of our time at Hapuku, in the spa or relaxing in the tree house. I have a few food issues, pre-warned them, and I rocked up to the restaurant to find they had typed me a special menu to cater for my food allergies. Above and beyond, nothing was a problem at Hapuku. Food was stunning, we loved staying here and would recommend it to anyone.

We had the most amazing stay here for our honeymoon. We stayed in Tree House No 1 and we couldn’t have asked for anything more. It is beautifully decorated with the most amazing views. We only stayed for x 2 nights but wish it could have been more.

The staff are all brilliant and the food is some of the best that we had in our whole NZ stay. Definitely make sure you stay in to enjoy the breakfasts and dinners!

There are the nicest little touches which help make your stay even more comfortable- For example freshly baked treats left in your room each day or delicious chocolate in the evening. We really enjoyed these.

Thank you all so much.

We stayed in a Tree Tops room in June 2022. We flew into Blenheim and drove down to the lodge to spend some time in Kaikoura. The room itself was spectacular and I would highly recommend staying here. There are stairs up to the room (I'm saying this because I couldn't read anywhere how you actually got up there and was wondering myself), so it's easy access if you can do a few flights of stairs. The room had full glass on both sides - one side looking out to the ocean and the other looking out to the mountains. Snow fell on the mountains while we were there and it was wonderful to see the snowy peaks once it had cleared. It was just brilliant to sit in front of the gas fireplace and look at the mountains while sipping on the complimentary wine received on arrival. The other side of the room was the shower with wall to floor glass looking out to the ocean. Totally private and what a special way to have a shower. The bed was in the middle so you could see both views from bed. Complimentary mini bar was nice and yummy cookies as well. We stayed for the chefs 3 course dinner which was very nice, although the room was cold (even though the fire was going) and we ended up having to put our jackets back on while dining. The dining atmosphere (same place where we had a delicious breakfast) was a little more casual than I had expected but nice enough. We had pre dinner drinks in the lounge with the fire roaring - very nice. If you get a chance to stay here, do it - you won't have regrets. We didn't get to use the pool or spa, but next time we will definitely book the spa which looks great outside under the stars.

We stayed for two nights recently on a trip through New Zealand. It was a delightful stay. We stayed in one of the lodge suites which was spacious and comfortable with a lovely lounge area with a gas fire, a large bedroom with comfortable bed and further seating. The bathroom was large with a lovely rain shower and a separate Japanese inspired bath. Very nice toiletries in the bathroom. The views from the entire property are superb and the public areas are delightful. The international combination of chefs and kitchen staff produced some memorable food and all the staff were, without exception, helpful, friendly and efficient. With many thanks to all including Rosalie, Keilla and Benny (sorry if I’ve misspelt anyone’s names) Can wholeheartedly recommend Hapuku Lodge and would definitely stay there again if we come back to New Zealand!

We have just returned from a 4 week trip around North & South Islands staying mostly in small lodges. Hapuku was undoubtedly one the most outstanding of these. We stayed in a Lodge suite more suitable for ageing knees, which was beautifully furnished with a wonderful bathroom which included a luxurious Japanese tub. The hospitality from all the staff was extremely good and the food both at dinner and breakfast was locally sourced and cooked in front of you in a cosy and welcoming dining room. recommended without reservation.

It is out of town and not walking distance to anything so depending on reason for your stay will decide if you need a car. If you are planning on just staying at the lodge and relaxing there would surely be a way to get there without car of your own (I would email the lodge and ask the question). If you are wanting to explore beautiful Kaikoura while there I would recommend hiring a car. The lodge food was amazing so no need to go and get food from elsewhere. A VERY beautiful part of the world. We stayed at Hapuku Lodge earlier this month and couldn’t fault it! We only did one night as part of a road trip in the region.

Agree with Richard -- you should get a car. The lodge is a bit remote and you'll have a hard time getting to and from without a car. Also, if you can, stay two nights!

Hi Charlotte, I am a travel agent and this is the advice we received: Road access to Kaikoura continues to be impacted with the inland road route now open for scheduled journeys. Please refer to the NZ Transport Authority website for further details. There is also very positive news that the main state highway south of Kaikoura (SH1) is likely to be opened before the 20th December. You could also look at taking a helicopter or fixed wing flight in and out. I can highly recommend this as a way to see the coastline, and is a wonderful experience. Hapuku are offering a significant subsidies for this as I am aware it can be expensive. Trailfinders should be able to give you the full information on this, let me know if they cannot. If you have car hire I am sure they can look at changing it around. It is not like you need it at Bay of Many Coves anyway, and they have a helipad.
