We have just returned from an 8 night stay at Raina Apartments and could not disagree more with the one review on this property. We would be more than happy to stay there again and wished we could stay longer. The property has both positives and negatives as most do - here are some of both.

Positives:
The property is across the road from a fabulous beach - suitable for both swimming and snorkelling; the best snorkelling on Rarotonga being approx 50m to the left of Raina beach. We also used the two kayaks provided to paddle out to the reef.

Raina Apartments are serviced daily (except Sunday) and this includes fresh towels for both showering and swimming so no need to clutter up your bag with a beach towel.

The garden apartment we had was spacious. It was one bedroom plus sleeping for 4 in the lounge area and even though there were 5 of us we did not feel cramped. We also had glimpses of the lagoon and reef from the living area.

The kitchen was well equipped with everything that we needed to prepare meals for 5.

The gardens were beautiful with a variety of colourful foliage.

The barbeque on the roof top was clean and quite new and we used it several times.

Negatives:

If you are looking for an aesthetically pleasing apartment this is probably not the place for you. The decor is tired and probably hasn't been updated since the building was new.

The water is solar heated so the best time to shower is in the afternoon after a day of swimming/snorkelling/kayaking.

There is no dishwasher so if you are not happy to do your own dishes this is not the place for you.

There is no air conditioning; however there are ceiling fans in the bedroom and living area. There are also insect screens on all windows and doors and we slept with the windows and sliding door open and the screen door closed and locked.

Roosters crowing at all hours of the day and night. This is common to all the island however and you just have to grin and bear it.

The building is on the main road; however the traffic is not constant and as the speed limit is 50km cars are not whizzing past at the speed of sound!

Difficult to know how to review this rental home managed by Raina Apartments. The location is excellent - right at the Fruits of Rarotonga radio tower and if you swim out you will see schools and schools of amazing fish. And the house and deck have a great view over the water. And there's plenty of room for everyone as the house has had room after room tacked on. We enjoyed the large dining table and lounge setting as my sister and family visited for dinner a couple of times. And the two bathrooms were appreciated, with surprisingly good water pressure. And it was great to be in a home with some wooden floors for a change - most floors are tiles in Raro. The outside shower and rinse taps around the house were really handy. But...It could be so much better.
The whole place needed a deep clean. The property was not that well kept with crumbling walls and a very dangerous few steps leading to the sea. The most comfortable bed is in a room only two metres from the next door families chicken coop and one of the TWO roosters kept us up all the first night! I was swearing to move the next day, but we changed bedrooms instead, moving to the room with a better sea view, nicer bathroom and...a bed like a block of concrete! For goodness sake, just swap the beds or put a mattress topper on it!!!! The Kitchen was only just set up enough for in-house cooking and there was an ant problem...again, providing a simple insect spray would have been appreciated.
It was really distressing when we locked our house keys inside by mistake. You are provided with two bunches of keys, probably about ten keys in total. Only ONE KEY opens a door to the Raina House. It means you can't use the handy door by the beach path, when you have rinsed off and need to have a shower. Such a shame. I had to walk down the road in my togs to the Raina Apartments and a nice couple of Filipinos (who live in the Raina House attached flat) came and let us in. They were very nice and helpful. Lord only knows how they get along when one of them can not speak a single word of English. The house comes with one kayak and paddle. No life vest to go with it. The towels were very stained indeed and need replacing, but at least there were enough of them. I've listed the positives and negatives and I really hope this place takes note and makes some long required improvements. At the moment, for the rental fee it is not good value. If we hadn't booked last minute, and been desperate for a home in this area, we would not have stayed.

THE GOOD:
Located close to a beach area.
All of the windows and sliding doors had screens.
The refrigerator was super and worked fine.

THE BAD: The Door and windows screens had holes The Latches on the sliding doors did not work (latches were fixed). The walls and ceiling had holes.
Needed to drive through a junk yard to get to the apartment.
No AC in the apartment. The fan in the living (sitting area) room did not work. Switch was disabled. The fan in the bedroom wobbled and was noisy. So needed to sleep with the window open.
There were no TVs or radios in the apartment.
Kitchen cabinets hinges damage and not working properly.
Living room furniture in poor shape. One setting chair broken.
Also, as there is no cancellation to the reservation within two weeks of arrival. You can not inspect the apartment and cancel if not acceptable, without forfeitting the deposit.

THE UGLY:
A switch plate in the main bedroom had scorch marks from an electrical short (did not use).
At about 1AM the dogs in the area started barking and about 6AM (sunrise) the roosters started crowing. (free roaming chickens)
Ants in one of the bath rooms and the kitchen. (do not know if ant bait is available or not) I understand not using ant spray near food preparation areas, but its a trap and the bait is carried by the ants back to the nest.
Under one of the kitchens cabinets there is the Propane Tank for the gas stove. (safety hazard).
Propane tanks should be outside!

This is just some of the faults found and we do not think the seven (7) night rental was worth the NZ$ we paid!!

This is the worst of the worst!
The pictures online are nothing like the actual place,
We got there and had to wait for someone to let us in, even though check in was 12pm
The apartment wasn’t clean, mould everywhere.
The apartment smells.
Bed absolutely horrible, we had to sleep on the floor on the mattress,
Legs on the mattress base where so old one fell off, lucky we were not sleeping on the base at the time.
Whole apartment looks like a share accommodation.
Curtains had mould,Shower had no hot water toaster was melted, floor filthy,
Just an all round horrible experience.
We paid for 7 nights stayed 3 slept none!
So noisy and no one mentions the combat class across the road at 6am!
If you value your sanity please do not stay here!
And not even an offer of a refund.
customer service a disgrace!

Luckily we found alternative accommodation

Very disappointing and almost ruined our holiday.

Not worth the money we paid!

Let me start by saying i had to give this a 1/5 as Tripadvisor doesnt allow anything less than "terrible", otherwise I would give 0/5. My wife and I booked 1 night here as part of our honeymoon while travelling from Aitutaki back to New Zealand. There are 8 units in the apartment complex, and we booked the "seaside view" room. Our room was directly on the main road and across the road from the beach which you couldnt see because of the large trees. The caretaker lady couldnt speak a word of english, but managed to show us to our room. We were shocked. 3 half used soaps still in the shower, plus it was a definate shower where you needed to wear thongs. We pulled the bed sheets back to discover mold and hair. The dust in the room was terrible even for me, not to mention my wife with asthma. We hire a car to go into town and stopped by the Rarotonga Pacific Resort who gave us a great rate (almost half price!) Great clean rooms here. We went back to Raina and checked out, about 4 hours after we checked in. Do yourself a favour and learn from our mistake. Do not even consider this place, you will be very disappointed!!

I firstly need to credit the manager of the apartments - very easy to deal with, lovely on the phone. However - these apartments bear NO resemblance to the photos on the web. They are extremely shabby, run down and SMELLY. The smell of mould is so strong, especially on the beds and towels, that within minutes of checking-in, we checked out and sought other accommodation. (we highly recommend Muri Beach Resort). I would not recommend this accom even for those on a tight budget (better to stay at Atupa Orchid Units).

Hi I deliberated about this review for a few days as I did get a cut price deal! however on reflection I realise that this place does merit a negative review from me. Stayed here July 2014. On arrival there was no one to meet us despite the owner insisting on us letting her know our flight details and arrival time. we were shown where to go by other guests staying there that had the same problem! We did eventually locate someone who carried our bags to the apartment and left us a key but not much was said and we had no official greeting. The apartment was dirty and very run down with an odd mouldy smell and obvious cobwebs in almost every corner of the room anyway we decided to shower after our long journey but could not get hot water at all and the shower door handle came off in my hand! My wife nearly freaked out when she saw the dirty state of the toilet and when we looked under the beds it was apparent that they had not been cleaned in years. We went to make a drink and the cups, and plates etc were not very clean at all so we ended up washing them all before use. we had no tea towel at all and the rest of the bath towels were very old and worn with mould spots on them. by now we were upset and disappointed with the whole thing and went out to dinner hoping next day would be better. Unfortunately it was more of the same for the next two days and we were seriously thinking of leaving , however we heard that a plumber and electrician had been to fix the leaks and shower eventually got hot. we bought our own towels and asked for clean sheets so things were a little better for the rest of our stay. On the whole this place is very run down and not at all like the internet photos on various travel websites including this one. Please don't be fooled by the nice pictures and beware of this place unless you don't mind being uncomfortable and sleeping in filthy rooms certainly not recommended to anyone.
Please see other reviews on this site and Jasons for confirmation that its not all its cracked up to be.
I hope this review saves someone from making the same mistake we did.

The person who reviewed from Tauranga NZ - covers our thoughts so will try not to double up.

We were over in the Cook Islands for 12 days for a family wedding and 10 days later a friends big birthday celebration. Conscious of cost for such a long stay - did not plan to stay all 12 nights in luxury or at one place.

Met at 1.10am by the brilliant travel agent/driver who gave us the best tour early in the am - even though he did not have us on his list. Booked us for our return to Aitutaki and took no money until that trip 6 days later. He knew all there was to know about Rarotonga!

The unit was just fine for us - spacious, clean and had a coffee plunger (we bought our own coffee - this was an early morning lifesaver for a coffee freak). The rooms cleaned daily by a wonderful sweet young person. With our weather a little overcast some days, the solar water heating system was not too hot - but perfectly ok. Also some parts of the bathroom needed a little work, but nothing more than say a holiday rental/motel unit in New Zealand.

Beautiful spot, lush bush, lots of roosters (and they live next to the flash hotels too) and on the road - but hey the traffic is so minimal did not notice it. Right on a bus stop - which is very handy! But then again the bus will stop anywhere!

Bonus - opposite the best beach on the Island (no bull). And just down the road (or up?) from the best ever lunch place - Fruits of Rarotonga - best fishburgers I have ever tasted, fruit smoothies and just sit and eat looking out to sea.

Bonus for me was that the owner (Tanya - or her Mother June?) did not do the double charging for the one night. Booked on Wotif.com and stated arrive Thursday at 1.10am - so spend half a night in bed, to awake to another Thursday. Most other hotels (other wedding guests tell us) charge for the two nights - or at least half the price. Not sure if it was good luck on my part - but it was welcomed. Tanya and June (via phone/email) very approachable.

Family and friends came to check out our "digs" and comparatively ours was very good value for the money we paid. Happy to go back there.

Stayed here in July 2014, and would definitely NOT recommend it to anyone. These units are unhygienic, unsanitary and certainly not the place to have your well-earned holiday. There was no hot water for about 15 of the 16 days we were there. The shower leaked water so badly, that it was coming up through the tiles in the walkway and the kitchen, in a smelly brown liquid. The bedding was only exchanged after 12 days and was covered in black mould. The laundry is being used as a dump for boxes, bottles and anything else that doesn't have a home. It has a rotten smell, and not the place one would want to wash your clothes. My son got an electric shock when turning on a light switch. The owners refused to admit that there was anything wrong, even though everyone there at the time was complaining about similar issues. Tanya did not even bother to make contact with us whilst we were there. There are smelly pigs being kept about 20 metres from the accommodation. There is a lack of any decent kitchen ware, and we had to make do with 4 spoons and 2 coffee cups during our stay. I had to go out and purchase a new fry pan to do our cooking in as the one supplied was completely unusable. I could go on and on about the unit and the state that they are in, but believe me, and read the reviews on Trip Advisor, prior to making your holiday choice. There are better places around at the same rates, stay well away from this one, you will end up very disappointed, as we were. I know that all the other travellers in the units while we were there, were very unhappy, and any complaining just fell on deaf ears. JME.

I arrived on the island for my best friend's wedding. As I was traveling alone this was one of the more affordable places for me to go. As I was unloading my stuff from the car my wallet was stolen by one of the workers.

The owners were rude and acted like I was making it up. I lost everything and had to go to thd NZ embassy for help.

I highly recommend that no one ever stays here! Not only was my wallet stolen but I had booked a house to stay in and when I got there the woman said that they gave it to someone else and tried to give me a disgusting apartment. After this I clearly didn't stay there but it ruined my holiday right from the start.
