The Grand Hotel Malahide offers a mixed bag when it comes to value; some guests appreciate the reasonable rates and special offers, while others find it overpriced. Its cleanliness and amenities generally earn positive marks, especially the welcoming bar and leisure facilities, though a few have mentioned issues with climate control. The rooms are a point of contention, as they're described as both spacious and clean yet occasionally criticized for noise and datedness.
The atmosphere is largely considered elegant, and the location is well-regarded for its convenience to local attractions. Service is commendable, with friendly staff, though not without the odd hiccup in service.

My wife and I went to Ireland recently as she wanted to see where her dad was born and brought up. We decided that we would also spend a few days exploring the country. It was notable that in several places that local people we spoke to asked if we were going to Dublin – we had planned our last 3 days there and each one suggested that we should stay at the Grand Hotel. This included family members, some of whom lived quite a way from Dublin. Quite smugly, we told them all that we had already selected and booked the hotel for three days.
Our stay there was the absolute highlight of our holiday. The hotel is in a beautiful location right on the coast. Parking was good, particularly in the underground car park that had a convenient lift to guest rooms and facilities. The experience began, of course, at reception. The registration process was amazingly quick and professional – the staff were extremely courteous and efficient. We quickly found our room, a twin aspect corner room with views over the marina and coast.
It was comfortably large and well appointed and there were so many small touches that enhanced the experience, such as bottles of Irish Water, a small box of chocolates, a coffee pod machine and face flannels - always a good sign. We also had comfortable chairs and a very serviceable desk. Oh, and the night light in the en-suite was a really nice touch for a nocturnal trip to the bathroom. The bed was large and very comfortable, with very soft and fluffy pillows.
Breakfast was taken in the Dining Room, which has picturesque views over the estuary. This also doubles up as the Coast Restaurant, which is open on Friday and Saturday evenings. Our last night was a Friday, so we chose to eat here in the evening. It was so good that we have chosen to write a separate review. As is customary these days breakfast was largely self-service, but with some food, such as an Irish breakfast, that was freshly cooked. The choice of food on offer was extensive, for example several different types of bread, plenty of fresh fruits, cold cuts and, always a good sign, a welcoming pot of porridge.
We also dined several times in the Matt Ryan bar. The Hotel suggests that this is the social hub of the hotel and we are happy to endorse this. The menu is varied and reasonably extensive, especially when compared with other 4* hotels we stayed at in Ireland. Indeed, the seafood chowder stands in comparison with Boudin in San Francisco in our estimation. The bar is vibrant and very comfortable and at the same time quite relaxing. This is in part due to the quality of the bar staff, who were very professional, but at the same time exuded the charm for which the Irish people are noted.
In short, our stay at the hotel was a truly 4* experience and one we will definitely repeat on our return to Ireland.

Stayed at the Grand hotel on Friday 11th Nov with my nephew as we were planning on attending the local Malahide parkrun to celebrate their 10th birthday. The hotel is only a short taxi ride €20 from the airport. Due to a flight delay we didn’t actually arrive to the hotel u ril after midnight so it was straight to bed. Luxury room, double and a single bed, luxury pillows and apart from hearing done drunken ladies enjoying themselves, slept soundly. Tea & coffee in room, luxury white towels and all the usual body wash/shampoo etc. Breakfast was absolutely amazing, sat it a dining area with stunning views of the sea, I bet it will be even better in summer months. Couldn’t fault the breakfast, spot on with ample choices, in fact too many choices as I ate much more than I normally would!! Check out was 12 midday, however they allowed us to use the gym facilities, sauna/steam room/jacuzzi and swimming pool so we spent the full afternoon there. We spent the rest of the day in Malahide where we had a few drinks and a meal before taxi back to airport. Overall an absolutely fantastic weekend in Malahide Go directly through the Grand hotel website as I got an even better deal than other websites

We stayed at this hotel last November when it was being refurbished & to be honest it was not a pleasant experience. But we returned this week to a completely different experience Everything from the room to the food was a class above The executive rooms have great views and are spotless & very comfortable are worth the extra. The breakfast was superb with a great choice of hot and cold in a great room with sea views Staff were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful We would definitely stay again & would recommend to all friends and family

Location is fantastic as 2 minutes walk from the town with all the bars and restaurants you could wish for. Also a reasonable walk to the velvet strand, the castle or the DART station. Staff very friendly and welcoming.
We had an “executive” room which was a pain to get to, 2 different lifts or multiple staircases and corridors. Room a good size, plenty of power points and USB sockets, bathroom a good size with very effective shower, all very clean. WiFi worked. Room furniture dated, room very hot with no Aircon. You can open the windows but all you hear are the major fans from Aircon in either the kitchen, gym or public rooms. Duvet weighed ton. The end result was. A poor nights sleep.
Breakfast a letdown with offerings being kept warm which made them look and taste un appetising, not sure that the ingredients were top quality, bacon just a mass of undercooked meat. Multiple plates were dirty! At €23 this was really poor and it would have been easier to walk into town for breakfast.
Have used this hotel many times over past 20 years and really feel that it needs work doing to make it a real quality facility. That said it was fairly full with tourists so perhaps the motivation is not there.

Stayed in a family room with my husband, and 2 children the view was nice from the room but there was no air-con and the heat was unbearable even with the window open it was so bad we couldn’t sleep. I would expect a 4 star hotel to have air con. Also there were only 2 bath towels in the room for a family of 4.
Secondly when we went to the pool there was a few men in the ladies changing rooms doing work to the locker doors, I was not made aware of this and had to change in the ladies toilet, which I was not impressed with, this work should of been carried out when the pool was closed not during peak hours.
Thirdly the breakfast was awful, the plates and culterly were dirty and the lady in front of me was complaining about it also. Then I found a big hair on one of the sausages after that I just couldn’t eat the breakfast. I informed one of the workers and showed him what I had found.
Upon checking out I informed the manager of all my concerns and they refused to refund me for the breakfast just said next time we can upgrade you. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to this hotel it really has so much potential but has been such a let down. I would not recommend for anyone to stay here, shouldn’t be charging 4 star prices for a 2 star hotel.

Dear LauracT7830WZ, Thank you for sharing your recent experience at The Grand Hotel. I deeply apologise for the issues you and your family encountered during your stay. We sincerely regret falling short of the high standards we pride ourselves on delivering to our guests. I am sorry to hear about the discomfort caused by the lack of air conditioning in your family room. Ensuring our guests' comfort is paramount. I can see you stayed with us during our summer season. We also regret that there were insufficient towels provided. Rest assured, I will address these concerns with our housekeeping and maintenance teams to prevent such oversights in the future. I want to extend my apologies for the inconvenience you faced in the Arena changing rooms. I will personally follow up with the Arena management team to ensure all works are scheduled and communicated appropriately moving forward. Regarding the breakfast experience, I am deeply sorry for the condition of the cutlery and plates. This is not reflective of the high standards we strive to maintain in our very popular artisan breakfast buffet. I will immediately address these issues with our food and beverage team to ensure stricter quality control. While I completely understand your disappointment, I hope we may have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future. We are committed to learning from this feedback and making the necessary improvements to deliver the exceptional experiences our guests deserve. Please feel free to reach out to me directly if you have any further feedback or if there's anything we can do to make amends on dgm@thegrand.ie. Kindest Regards Emma Donegan

My husband and I booked to stay here for my birthday as we love Malahide. Last time we stayed in Portmarnock Golf Hotel and wanted something more central. That is really the only good thing I can say about this hotel - its location. We were greeted by an unsmiling young lady at reception ( check in was very busy) who told us we had booked room only and that breakfast would cost 23.50 euros each per morning which I thought was excessive so didn't book. When I checked online bed and breakfast rate was only 20 euros more per room per night. I phoned to query this with reception and the girl said she would speak to a manager and phone me back. Needless to say with their level of service I am still waiting on that call. I also emailed my query but still have not received a reply. I'm not a big breakfast eater so was not willing to pay an exorbitant amount. That evening we went to have dinner in the bar but the stench of fish was overpowering and made me feel ill so we didn't eat there. We ate all our meals on our 2 night stay in the village. Mattresses were too firm. Two of our towels were frayed. Window did not open properly and hairdryer only blew cold air. The lifts closest to our room were out of action. Really put a downer on my birthday celebrations. Will definitely be back to Malahide but not to this hotel.

Dear Angiev2804, Thank you so much for your recent review, I have responded directly to your email. I was terribly disappointed to read of your unsatisfactory experience here at the Grand Hotel. Over the course of your stay, it is clear to see there were several areas we have let you down. I can assure you it is not befitting or reflective of the experience we wish to create for our guests. In particular, your reference to our Breakfast costs. Your room was booked directly through Expedia, we have a direct offer with all our "online travel agents". We offer this special rate on booking only to encourage guests to book breakfast in advance of arrival. We unfortunately cannot modify any third party online booking website offers. Which is standard hotel practice. Our arrival upsell breakfast is €23pp which you were quoted. I'm so sorry to see your review posted so public on Trip advisor, it's a shame we could not have resolved this directly. I'm really sorry that your birthday was not more memorable. We pride ourselves on exceeding guests’ expectations and delivering a memorable experience. Kindest Regards Emma Donegan

Arrived at 14:30 approached check in to see if we could check in early. The lovely man behind reception said our room was not ready but gave us tags for our luggage so we did not have to haul it around. We came into Matt Ryan’s bar, ordered at the bar & the drinks were delivered down to our table, there was a tab then for our drinks, we went up to our rooms later to change and freshen up and the rooms are spotless. Smart tv so bring a fire stick if you have one. We then had dinner in Matt Ryan’s bat & it was absolutely exceptional, we loved it. Beautiful food. We had a lovely room also. Nothing to fault , unfortunately the pool was closed when we were there but we were aloud to use the sauna and steam room if we liked. Would definitely stay again..

We stayed here for two nights, the first as a late arrival /early departure for a trip to Belfast. Our room was tiny, with two twin beds, on wheels we were unable to lock, making the beds an on going adventure. Other than our check in (front desk staff was friendly) we really had no interaction with the hotel. Our second night, after Belfast, we checked in to another tiny room, although this time a small double bed. We were advised that although the bar was still open, the kitchen was closed. It was suggested that we could order take away from one of the local restaurants and bring it back to the hotel. However, when asked if we could eat in the bar, or in one of the many spaces and sitting areas in the lobby area, the front desk staff were told ( by the manager) the only place we could eat was in our (very tiny) room! Since that was not an option, we chose to go to the bar, and have a drink, with a little bag of nuts and tube of Pringles chips (which we were charged for). Here we encountered a rude bartender who made us feel like we were imposing on his time. Just not a warm welcoming feeling! We spent 2 weeks in Ireland, staying at many hotels and B&B's. In all of stays we encountered nothing but the warm and welcoming service we expected through out Ireland, until here. The 2nd star in the rating was reflective of the front desk staff. Otherwise it would have been 1 (or ) stars. Other than the beautiful lobby, and the front desk staff on both visits, there was not much grand in our stays.

Nothing grand about this hotel. Even the automatic doors were periodically dysfunctional, as were all the vending machines on every floor. On one, the "Not Working" sign hung upside down, a sad testimony to the indifference of the staff. Luggage trollies have sticky tired wheels. Concierge service non existent but even civility is lacking -- an old woman wearing an orthopedic brace was told by a young woman twiddling her thumbs at reception to heave her luggage on to a nearby trolley, without asking if she need help. Even when they had nothing to do, the trio of ladies sitting there were strangely immobile. Requests for help bounced off them. The nice folk are in the bar, with quick, friendly and attentive staff.
The rooms are clean, small, nothing grand about them either, parr for a 3 star hotel. There is no mini bar but a kettle and instant coffee. I heard complaints about upper floors being very hot, as it was a warm day. The bed was not very comfortable and the pillows ancient and worn out. Ditto the sheets.
The gym is an airy place, with really good standard machines. The pool is very large, the staff very friendly. Locals go here. They are lovely.
The location is not near the beach but near the walk-way around the harbor. If you want beach, you need to go to the Portmarnock Resort Hotel. Strangely, it often costs a little less, while their smaller rooms are much nicer, the front desk staff is helpful, and the beach begins right at the door.

We had a really enjoyable stay at this hotel. The staff at reception were helpful, welcoming and altogether delightful as were the staff in the grill bar. Our executive room had been recently refurbished and was tastefully decorated. It had an abundance of plugs which was great for charging multiple appliances at the same time and plugs close to a mirror for hair drying and straighteners. An absolute boon as any woman will tell you. It also had two luggage racks so no need to balance one on a chair and put one on the floor. Great for someone who has dodgy knees. The bathroom had a floor level light which allowed one to go to the toilet at night without flooding the bedroom with light. It seemed that someone had actually planned what guests might appreciate as opposed to what was most convenient/ cheapest to do. The grill bar had the usual menu but portions were a good size and it was excellent quality. Fairly simple things done really well along with fast, friendly service. Breakfast was served in the restaurant overlooking the estuary and like everything else about the this hotel it was an enjoyable experience.

Sorry, I’ve only seen your question just now. Yes, shops and restaurants are just a couple of minutes walk away. Malahide Castke and grounds etc are well worth a visit and are a very short taxi ride away.
There are more places to choose from in the Malahide area.
