Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We came across this accommodation by chance as we had been recommended the Wilkin and Young rivers to fish and the Gillespie pass to tramp. We couldn't believe our good fortune when we arrived. It is really 5 star accommodation in an amazing setting. What really made the stay was the hospitality and warmth of Kaye and Willie who run he place. They were generous and thoughtful and made our stay really comfortable. I couldn't recommend this place more highly and we are planning a return already.

Makarora River Ranch is an incredible place. We (family of 4 adults) stayed in the Homestead for one night, and wished our itinerary was such that we could have extended our time there. We arrived late after a long day of driving to be warmly greeted by Willy. He showed us to our accommodation where we found a lovely fire blazing in the stove that he had set for us. The house was positively charming, and comfortable. Little touches like a personalized note on the door, cookies on the countertop, and full on breakfast fixings for us in the refrigerator made us feel so welcomed. We awoke to a beautiful and tranquil landscape surrounding us and were so sorry we didn't have time to enjoy and explore it. Everything about this property and the people who run it left us with a wonderful warm feeling. We will definitely be back. This is a gem of a place.

Absolutely the very best accommodation experience ever! A home away from home and in a gorgeous setting but best of all the hospitality and friendship of Kaye and Willie, as a family we have returned 3 times so far, each time with the same fabulous experience and we intend to return more!

Wonderful location.
Beautiful and complete lodge. Everything was present. When we arrived, a delicious cake was ready in the kitchen, fresh fruits on the table and the fridge was
filled with enough nice things.
The next day it was refilled again, also a delicious cake.
Everything was very clean.
We would have stayed longer at this beautiful lodge in this wonderful scenery!

This is the best of places . Well appointed, clean and many, many extras. You are staying on a working farm. There are three accomodation options - a V large studio apartment , a three bed room house that sleeps 7 people and a lodge - it boasts all the extras of a hotel - apart from a mini bar.! Makarora offers what must be the best of Kiwi scenic trips - Helicopter - a 3 hour relatively easy walk and a jetboat ride. There are also farm tours on a very interest sheep beef and deer farm.

The property, like the hosts, is exceptional. It is rustic but finished to a high specification, spacious and super comfortable. The scenery is second to none and the huge covered deck, is a great place to enjoy it. There are lots of walks straight from the house, as well as longer ones very nearby.
We were lucky to have the chance to do a Farm tour with Craig. It was an unforgetable experience. We saw Tarrs and deer, as well as the herding of cattle and sheep with Craigs well trained dogs. Absolute magic!
We only stayed here for 2 days, but I wish it could have been longer. There is much to do in the area, and if nothing else, it is the perfect place to simply be!
I can't thank Craig and Eileen enough for their warm hospitality and for making this experience one I will always remember.

Along the road we saw signs with 'farmstay' but we couldn't find it at first. The distance was not right but later on we heard that the management did not put the signs there. We drove on the property asking for accommodation, it was a bit low season allready. We hired the cottage for 2 persons, very spacious and much extras. Nice terrace, fireplace with dry wood, great bed, great view, quiet at night, abundant free breakfast ingredients and very nice management, enjoyed a farm tour as well on the day of our leaving. We stayed 2 nights; bit complex because you have to book or pay cash and we did'nt have enough cash with us so we had to drive back to Wanaka for an ATM. Minor problem. We could do our lundry for free at the lodge building, their you can stay with more people, great hight standard as well. This is what (european?) tourist want! Best place of our 4 weeeks holiday.

We stayed in the homestead for three unforgettable nights. The farm provides extremely comfortable accommodation in a beautiful location, with wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and river. Eileen is an extremely kind host. Her breakfast is very tasty and generous. And the farm is the perfect base to explore the national park and Southern Alps. If you can afford it, Wilkin River Jet's Siberia Valley Experience is definitely worth it. If we'll ever get the opportunity to visit the South Island again, we will definitely come back!

Makarora River Ranch is on State Highway 6, about 2 km south of Makarora Visitor Centre. When we arrived, Eileen led the way to the cottage in her pick-up truck, she had already lit the log burner, so the cottage was warm and welcoming. Inside the cottage is spacious and comfortable with many nice touches,eg chocolate cake, fresh fruit, ingredients for continental and cooked breakfast, etc. The kitchen was well equipped and the cottage is very private. Beautiful views of snow-capped mountains and quiet at night. Lovely countryside sounds of birds, lambs and calves in the morning. No Wi Fi or mobile phone signal, which is either a plus or minus, depending on your own point of view. We really enjoyed our all too brief stay.
