This hotel/motel is one of two to choose from in the town. It reminded me of an American truckstop of the early 60s. However, it was reasonably quiet, the staff were helpful, i was able to cook a meal, have a hot shower, a heater and a good night's sleep. So what more could you ask - it was basic but well priced.

I I haven't utiliser the hotel/motel facilities however can recommend stopping by the Pen Cafe as part of this business! I had the pencakes for breakfast and they were delicious! Different to any other! I also had an amazing coffee! Will definitely return :) Thanks

Great location, cheap rooms and unresponsive staff, we stayed here few months ago and it was a good experience once we got some one to check us in. The legendary pens cafe is closed now and new owners are not looking after the place too well...

This place is cheap and you definitely get what you pay for. Our first night, we couldn't get into the room we had been promised so we stayed in an extremely dated little unit where I had to share a small single bed with my toddler. Not fun!

There was a big mark on the carpet which looked like possibly a burn mark. There were marks on the wall, the only place to hang your clothes was on a pipe in the living/bedroom and the shower and kitchen were very dated.

The next night we moved to a bigger room which was much more modern but right next to the road so if you are a light sleeper, you won't have fun. (The whole motel is very close to the road so actually light sleepers won't get a good sleep no matter which room they are in).

At 3am on our last night, I was woken by a man who wouldn't stop banging on our door until I got up. He wanted to know if my room was the office. I wouldn't expect anyone to be manning an office in the middle of the night but the office isn't regularly manned anyway and you quite often have to go into the pub which, to me, smelled really bad.

It definitely depends which room you get as to how easy the decor is to stomach. For me, that first room put me off ever coming here again and I've booked to stay at The Welcome Inn for our next visit.

I can't compare this place to any other Waiouru accomodation apart from the barracks as I haven't stayed in the other motel.
I have stayed in this motel a few times over the years and it has always been a great place to say...until this time.
It appears the motel has been left to look after itself. The units are very tired and dated. Mismatched furniture, mould on the walls and drapes that are so old and thin they remind you of your grandmothers front room curtains.
Originally the heating in these units was in the form of the old school style radiators. When they were working the rooms were exceptionally warm all the time. Now the heating is left to a ceramic panel heater screwed to the wall and a fan heater. The fan heater had a dodgy connection and had to be tipped backwards to make it work. A possible fire hazard so couldn't be left on to heat the unit while out.
The beds in the units are adequate and the linen is very clean.
The kitchen area is also adequate for a short stay.
The bathroom is similarly adequate.
All in all the motel is quite close to the mountain. Walking distance to the National Army Museum which is the big drawcard for Waiouru.
The staff at the Oasis motel and hotel are the stars of this establishment they are friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately until the motel is updated we won't be staying here again.

Clean and basic rooms. Hot showers, clean sheets, everything you need is on hand and the staff made us very welcome on our second visit. VERY INEXPENSIVE. The locals are fabulous and made a couple from Northland very welcome as usual..........thank you all so much.

Basic motel at $90 for two overnight. Rather rundown but clean and tidy. The motel units are opposite the Oasis Hotel where you make your booking. The hotel has a restaurant attached called the Pen Cafe and its decor is 90,000 multi coloured ball point pens around the ceiling. I ordered a large fish and chips which I regretted. The fish was probably Hoki and the taste was not good. Three large pieces of fish but I could only stomach one and left the other two. Batter was okay as were the chips but not a meal I would risk again. The meal was generous and even had two fried eggs with a small side salad. My wife had a conventional shrimp cocktail and said it was good.

The motel had three two bulb light fittings in the main room of which only one bulb worked. The three different types of heaters had a sign above which basically said don't alter as they are on a time switch. None actually became warm to the touch but surprisingly enough it was comfortable inside and when we looked out in the morning there was a frost. The beds were comfortable. The milk in the frig froze solid so I guess the frig is working better than it should! The main Hotel across the road had a log fire burning in the bar and was comfortably pleasant.

We had a weekend stay here. The property is beginning to age but is otherwise comfortable. We had a large room with three beds. Our room was towards the rear of the motel, so were not bothered at all by the noise of traffic on the highway. The associated Oasis hotel across the road is a great place to drop in.

It has what you need for an overnight stop. Beds are clean and nice, but the building is a few decades old.
Noise from passing trucks all night, but no so high as to disturb my sleep.

Both the hotel and the “town” does leave me with a feeling of maybe having stepped into a scene from a Tarantino movie ;-)

We were passing through Waiouru towards the close of a business day and chose to stop at the Pen Cafe for a meal. Glad we did.

The service we received was friendly, warm and happy, with no indication that the place was about to close for the day so to hurry up. While we waited for the food, we looked around the countless number of pens on display - some so old that I remember them from my younger days !

The food was lovely and fresh - seafood for us both - and it was hard to imagine that the town was so far from any fishing port, such was that freshness. Low-alcohol beer accompanied it all.

When we left, we knew we'd eaten well and would certainly return if time and situation allow.
