We visited the Chatham Islands in March and had an amazing stay at the hotel. The rooms were immaculate and had everything we needed. Toni and Pipi were the best hosts you could have. We had an upstairs room and it was worth the money, they are very spacious while the down stairs are quite tight
The restaurant produced first class meals night after night.
The Chatham Islands is a must see part of NZ.
Thanks Toni - Janene and Kerry

Just back from travelling to the Chathams with Gina ( ask to travel with her, she’s an amazing host) from Pukekohe Travel. The trip was a blast from our past. If you grew up in New Zealand in the 1950s you will find that there are many reminders of that time here. However the cuisine at the hotel was not at all like the 50s! The lovely chef is an award winner and one of several innovative young people who have returned to their Island having studied ‘abroad’. The first photo is of one of our desserts. However, try to visit the Chathams during the Crayfishing season (not March/April) as you may be served defrosted Crayfish that looks great but is not at all as good as it is when fresh (second photo).
Also ask for an upstairs room as sometimes the 4 wheel drivers park up outside the downstairs rooms and leave their motors going while the driver pops into the bar for a beer...

Have returned after four wonderful days on the Chatham's staying at Hotel Chatham in their new Forget Me Not Suites.

This is the most laid back relaxing holiday that I have every had, every body on the Island is so friendly and helpful, nothing is ever to much trouble and everybody has a positive can do attitude.

The new suites are truly luxuriousness, very comfortable, the beds providing an excellent nights sleep and the showers a very refreshing wake-up in the morning! Although separate from the hotel (less than 5 min walk) each suite contains facilities for making a hot drink as well as a fridge and microwave.

We had our meals (breakfast & dinner) and pre dinner drinks in the hotel. The food was tasty (especially liked the Blue Cod) and fresh and well presented. A good selection of wine and beer was available to add to our enjoyment.

All the staff we interacted with at the hotel were professional, helpful and genuinely helpful, I must make mention of Toni Croon who went the 'extra mile' to ensure our visit was extra special - we cannot thank her enough for her organisation.

Their website is so out of date which show pictures of rental cars they don’t have. Made a booking for a two bedroom beach house only to find it was actually one bedroom….they had changed the name of it. Went to have evening meal there on Sunday only to be told it was buffet….not mentioned on web site. It took one month to answer an email but the worst was yet to come. We pre ordered a crayfish meal at $80 each giving three days notice. We watched the manger write it into the hotel diary. We turned up on the night excited to be having crayfish for dinner only to be told that kitchen staff were not told about our meal so there would be no crayfish. I just wanted to walk out but my partner said we would choose something off the evening menu. Something simple as fish and chips. We sat down and another couple who we had met before arrived. They made their order and we got talking. All of a sudden their meal arrived. Where was ours? I mentioned it to one of the waitresses who could give no answer. The other couple had finished their meal and were ready to leave. So was I and as I walked out the waitress said our meal was coming. I left the building but my partner waited and turned up to the car with our meal in a cardboard box…..salad included. You can imagine what it was like when we got home and our $64 fish and chips meal went straight into the fire. This place is NOT a restaurant but nothing short of a school tuck shop. We could hear everything like the immature like waitresses like we’re talking like out loud like. The table set up was two napkins set beside but the cutlery just thrown into the middle of the table for us to set up. There are no individual tables just long rows akin to boarding school. The only compensation they were prepared to offer was an $8 bottle of beer. I am so glad we did not stay there.

Rung up to find out availabilty of four different options of properties that Hotel Chathams have that suited me (they have basically 80% of the market over there sown up) that I researched for accommodation and the owner didn't give me the chance to ask or chose which I would prefer, she just said you're staying in this one. I said that doesn't suit me (I said didn't want shared facilities) she said too bad this is what I'm booking for you. I replied that I don't like to be told where I HAVE to stay and she bluntly said "well go somewhere else then!"
The only other real options on the Chathams are a upmarket lodge or B&B which is really aren't my style - prefer the classic motel type place with kitchenette and self contained facilities.
Real shame because I've cancelled my trip there now and the locals and tour operaters will miss out on $3000+ tourist spend because of the attitude of the owner of this place.

We stayed at Hotel Chathams from 6 -13 Feb 2021. Thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Chathams. It was our second trip, 10 years after our first trip. The food was first class. The day trips to all the sights were very interesting and the info from the guides was great. Interesting to see the difference between both trips. We had booked a fishing trip and a day trip to Pitt Island as extras. We had missed Pitt Island on our first trip and really wanted to see it this time and we expressed that to Pukekohe Travel when we booked. They explained it was weather dependent. What they omitted to tell us that it was also dependent on the order in which you booked your tour. We had a group of 28 and we were 25 and 26. The first day they had a fishing trip and took the first 8, this was the number the boat could take. Next day was Pitt Island trip so they took those same 8 again and another 3, making 11 which was the number the tour van on Pitt could hold. Then things turned pear shaped. No more fishing trips or trips to Pitt for various reasons which we accepted. We felt there should have been a much fairer way of selecting the people for these extras. Not first in first served. If you knew this why would you go in a group of more than 10. Be warned if you book through Pukekohe Travel. We have expressed our feeling to Pukekohe Travel but they do not intend to change first in first served.

We stayed at the Forget Me Not Suites which are a new part of the Hotel and had all our meals at the Hotel which was about 100 m away. Everything was great - nice fluffy towels, very comfortable bed, daily housekeeping etc.
The meals down at the Hotel were first class, with generous helpings and multiple courses - certainly no-one went hungry.
Toni from the Hotel arranged all our trips and tours but unfortunately some attractions were closed over New year so we'll just have to go back!
That said, it did seem as if there should be a definite "capacity number" of guests to make all feel welcome, well fed and transported to the variety of attractions on the Island.

We stayed 2 nights in the Beach House, part of the Hotel Chathams range of accommodation. The cottage was one unit of a duplex, out of town about 1km to the east of town. It is a beautiful 15min walk down the beach to the main hotel. The unit is basic but functional, with a small kitchenette. The Sky TV worked well, as did the free Wifi internet, albeit a little slow (normal for the Chathams). Overall we had a great stay and would definitely recommend it to other travelers, definitely better than staying at the main hotel.

We stayed at the Beach House (4 of us). Basic but adequate. We had intended to self cater but the supply ship was late so ended up having our meals in the Bar at the Hotel.
Good pub food with enough variety to avoid boredom. (Hot Tip: Get to the Bar by 6pm so you can order the night's "special" to enjoy after a few drinks. If you are late you may miss out!) Given their logistical issues their prices were very reasonable. We enjoyed our time but if you have high expectations, expect silver service and everything to happen on time you will be disappointed!!
