Works as a stop if you have your sleeping bag, own food, and do not mind the power-abusive lady running the refuge. If you have other opportunities to enioy a peaceful mountain experience, take them. A hiker just got helicoptered back after spending the night there.

I spent a night at Podragu in early-October 2019. I arrived extremely tired having not expected the amount of snow on the path up from Victoria so early in the year and my solo hike up had sapped more energy than it should have. The location of the cabana is mind blowing, tucked under the ridge and next to the beautiful Podragu lake. It's the most beautiful location I found in the mountains. The cabana itself is incredible, a substantial two story stone building which is as beautiful as its surroundings, neither overpowering the other. It's kept spotless and in good condition. Best of all was Corina, she saw how tired I was and got me onto the terrace over looking the lake and in the sun shine. Immediately I was offered hot drinks but all I needed was to admire that view for 20 minutes. It's true the food is basic, but it's good honest food and well prepared by Corina. Yes the beer is more expensive than in the villages, but it's cheaper than in the city bars and you have to remember everything is taken there and taken back by donkey. Realise where you are and you realise that you're really having a feast and drinking nectar. The bed was comfortable for the night, I wasn't cold thanks to having a good sleeping bag. In the morning breakfast was ready at the time I'd agreed with Corina and I was once more on my way, rested, fed, and in good heart. Some of the reviews here are written by people who didn't respect the mountain, they didn't leave enough time, they didn't turn back when they should have, they didn't have equipment to sleep in the free refuges, and they went to Corina's business without money and demanded discount rooms. Go to Podragu because it's a heavenly spot, but remember you're in the mountains and respect them. I can't wait to be back on the ridge this coming October.

At the end of June this year I had the privilege to hike the trail from city of Victoria to Vf Moldoveanu on Fagaras mountain All hike is a marvel of nature trough the thick forests of the first 1500 m, full of birds singing theirs rhapsody’s,to the lush of grassland of the last 1000 m with the multicolored flowers bloomed ,goat maintain roaming and sheep corrals. In the middle of this is Cabana Podragu sitting like a fortress against the forces of nature. It is a bit of rough gem ,with the bunk beds from the other era, but an welcome one in the bad weather that can change in no time, specially in June Many thanks to Corina ,the manager of the cabin she is doing a wonderful job maintaining the place under the circumstances, hard to get supplies on the top of the mountain with no road and donkeys as the only means of transport. Thanks again

So my friends and i went trekking on the highest peak of Romania, Vf. Moldoveanu 2544m. We planned it as a obe day trip, starting very early morning and returning by night at our car parked down at Balea Lac. We took out stuff and left papers and money in the car, so we dont lose... Trip was longer than we planned, we spend more time on the peak so we ended up in front of a big decision: return to our cars - a 8 hours long trekking and at least 5 hours in complete dark, knowing we are tired but most of all its VERY dangerous, there are parts with only metal chains.. or, second option just walk 4 hours to 'Cabana Podragu' the nearest and only place we could sleep that night and just continue the trip next day, on day light. We decided sleeping at Podragu is the safest, so after a hard road to walk we got there, i think 11PM and realised OUR MONEY IS IN THE CAR! Just found little money in our pockets, the amount for 3 people sleeping there and we were 4. The lady there when we tried to ask just pay for 3 beds and sleep 4 people in 3 beds bcuz of this unexpected situation just started SCREAMING like crazy and forced us to leave, sleep outside. There were 6-7 degrees maybe. After long begging her she is our only solution and we just need even one bed and we all share it, she took all our money and said we can sleep in the kitchen, on the floor and she will provide sleeping bags and pillows. She made us wait 2 hours to prepare our "room" and when we got there.. she gave us 4 chairs in a row/person just put together with other 4 chairs like in her oppinion this was a "double bed". 2 people had to share this "bed and only one sleeping bag and no pillow... even though she had PLENTY. It was the worst experience ever, cried all night bcuz it was very cold, could not sleep.. Did not even have space to lay on 4 chairs.. Im 1,71m.... She had little respect for some humans in a desperate situation, took all our money but had us sleep on the floor even though she had available free beds or just give us enough sleeping bags. So my advice is TAKE MONEY with you, haha, even on the mountain and if no needed don't sleep there. The owner is a cold hearted 'human' and the place offers little comfort. 🙂

We stayed 2 nights (in a company of 4) in Podragu hut in August 2015. As information was really scarce about this place, I collected a few tips: * Don't bother much with reservation. We tried to reserve beds in advance: sent several emails and sms to the addresses indicated on the website (podragu.ro), but no answer came. However the hut has 70 places to sleep - in dorm rooms of 15-20 people - so most likely there will be free places, especially on weekdays. * The beds were for 35, 40 and 50 RON per person per night. No idea what makes the price difference, by the time we arrived there were only 50 RON places offered. The rooms were clean and extra blanket provided for no extra charge, which was actually useful on top of our sleeping bags. Extra slippers were also provided free of charge for guests. * Access to water is fine, water from the tap is drinkable, and you can even take a shower. Though mind there is only cold water in the hut, so it will be a refreshing experience. * The cabin staff was overall quite pleasant, and communicating both in English or German. * Food variety is rather limited: for breakfast fried eggs (8 RON for 2 eggs), for dinner one type of soup or one type of second dish (around 20 RON). There was no bread available when we stayed there, so make sure to have some extra food supplies with you. * Prices are relatively high for drinks (10 RON for a coke or for a beer), but you need to consider that all supplies are carried there by donkeys. * It's around 6 hours of hike from Balea Lake, and 4 hours from Moldoveanu peak. * The surrounding nature is really beautiful, and hut is conveniently located just 30 minutes walk off the main ridge. Given the fact that this is the only real tourist hut (aside from emergency shelters) right next to the main ridge of Fagaras, it's really a good location to take a night or two if you don't want to carry a tent, and enjoy wonderful nature around you!
