While house hunting we needed a place to stay in west Auckland and found there are very few. In the end we had no choice and after reading the reviews arrived with much trepidation. It was with enormous relief that we found the room is a good state of repair , clean, good shower all in all the stay was fine and it would appear the owners have addressed the issues in previous reviews.

I called in prior to check-in and asked for directions to a couple of vineyards. The manager/owner was so obliging and was helpful with giving me clear directions. Once we checked in the room was basic and all we needed. It was clean and tidy and very peaceful. We were comfortable and both had a good nights sleep before moving on for the next part of our trip.

We booked 15 rooms here for ourselves and our wedding guests over a weekend as we were getting married at nearby Cassels wedding venue. This was the only accommodation in the area that suited our requirements and despite having reservations about the motel beforehand, it worked out very well. The owner is very friendly and helpful, both via email in the planning stages and during our stay. The layout and facilities of the motel accommodated what we wanted and with a group booking we got a discounted rate.

The motel has two wings, one along the front by the road and another wing going towards the back of the property where the majority of rooms are and which we booked out. The day before our wedding we wanted to hold an afternoon/evening BBQ so all guests staying here could meet up and get to know one another before the big wedding day. The large kitchen/lounge area and outdoor garden/pool area were great for this - we couldn't find another motel/hotel in the area that allowed such a get together. We were able to bring all our own food and use the motel's fridge, BBQ, cutlery and plates with no problems.

On the day of the wedding we got ready at the motel - we made sure we and our parents had the best rooms along the pool/garden and they were plenty big enough for hair/makeup, etc. We organised a bus from local company Ritchies to transport guests to the venue Cassels and back again. It was great that our guests could meet for breakfast, etc in the lounge/dining area (we brought our own food) rather than keep to their rooms.

Having seen a number of rooms I can say that the room layouts and bathroom setups do vary - some better than others. I was pleasantly surprised that being a motel the rooms were cleaned each day with beds made and new towels if needed. The motel could certainly make improvements to attract more guests, such as update the furnishings in the communal areas, dining area, etc, and keep it tidy and uncluttered. When we first checked out this motel a year before our stay the owners stored their ride-on lawnmower in the dining area, but thankfully this was gone when we stayed. The garden/pool area was nice with a few of our guests using the pool, but could definitely be improved by hiring a gardener now and then.

I would recommend this motel to anyone interested in using it the way we did, i.e. to accommodate a wedding party and holding a pre or post wedding family get together.

Ak West in Henderson looks100 times better in photos than in real life. Be very careful when you book, the staff don't understand english. The beds are all on wheels and move around with every movement, the curtains were all mouldy, The bath had a black ring around it, and had pubic hairs on the bottom of the bath. No privacy and you can hear full conversations from the rooms beside you. Worst motel i have ever stayed in! Wasn't cheap either!

We stayed here for 3 nights recently, for a wedding. Because of a flight delay we didn't arrive until 1am! They waited up for us so they could let us in! Were friendly when we asked directions or advice.
Clean and comfortable room.
Clean communal cooking and eating area.

Checked into this motel as was going to a graduation up the road. The photos looked nice and some of the older reviews were ok. The gardens have not been looked at for months and around the back grass was nearly up to my waste. One of the car parking areas has been blocked off and looks like an area of the Christchurch Red Zone. ( where I work). The room was not clean and even had a previous occupants wet towel hanging on the bathroom door. The carpet was stained, there was mould on the roof and curtains and there was a roughly fixed and unpainted hole in the bedroom wall.

Looking at the photos this would have been s lovely place once however sadly has been let go. The staff do not seem to be aware of any if the described issues ( except the garden) there are better places to stay and for less than $125 a night.

I hate to give a bad review however there are at the time of writing this no redeeming features about this motel. If the maintenance is carried out and some serious cleaning done it would be an OK place to stay.

More like a hotel than a motel. Quiet, clean & comfortable. Courteous, helpful & friendly staff. Great location, opposite Stuges Road train station and within walking distance of Henderson shopping centre and downtown. Laundry facilities. Offered use of kitchen plates, cutlery, microwave and fridge. Felt secure leaving car in parking area. Excellent experience wouldn't hesitate to recommend. P.S. The fruit market next door has fresh fruit ice-cream to die for!
Thanks AK West - The Blairs from Canada

This was the second time staying here during our trip to Auckland. The layout of the place is ok as we used the kitchen/lounge area both times to cook our meals. Would tell people about the place as it was very clean and tidy.

The motel was clean and inviting. The reception people were most helpful, giving us advice on where to eat locally, and meeting any requests we had, such as crockery and an ironing board and iron. It is a handy place to stay if visiting the west coast of Auckland and the Waitakeres.

There are some downsides. First it is not what we normally expect a motel to be, and I would be better described as a hotel. There was no information pack in the room to tell the guest anything about how to get out in case of fire, the services available at the establishment, where to eat, what to do etc, all things I have found in motels in NZ. It seems that they do have a breakfast option but there was no information to say that they had breakfast available.

The room had no crockery outside of 2 cups and saucers, so had to ask for some so that we could have breakfast. It also did not have a toaster, as is normal for a motel but not a hotel. The room has a single and double bed, but I would be very careful in winter, as the single bed is placed right up against the only heater in the room. If the heater was switched on, there would be a high risk of fire. There is no air conditioning, and the room got very stuffy after a while, and we had to open the windows to get some air, then close them to let the room warm up. The windows were fitted with security sashes, but one had broken off the window, and in the area security needs to be better.

The walls must not be built to the standard of many motels I have stayed at. We could hear people walking around in the room above, and could clearly hear music from a house across the road, about 50m away.
They do have Sky TV, but where most motels and hotels will have at least the basic package, the only channels are 4 sports, one movie and Disney. They also have WiFi but at $3 per hour it is quite expensive. The website says it has a large carpark, but on the day we stayed, over half the carpark was locked off behind gates and car parking was very limited to those outside the front of the establishment, and with a function on at the same time, car parking was at a premium.

Overall it was an ok place to stay, but it needs to lift it's game on some of the basics we expect of a motel, but as a hotel it is quite adequate. If the owners want it to really be a motel, I would suggest that they supply crockery and a toaster at least, although most motels will have a microwave as well. If not then it should be rebranded as a hotel.

They should also a) open up Sky to provide channels such as Discovery, etc which comes as part of the Sky basic package, b) open up the other carparks for better and more secure parking, c) extra pillows would also be welcome for those who want more than one pillow to sleep on.

I would recommend that the owners remove the single bed, and wonder if the Fire Service have ever checked for fire safety there.
Generally not as good a value as other motels for the nightly rate which could easily be fixed if the owners did not cut back on small features, did a little bit of maintenance and provide more information in the room.
