The Hurunui Hotel is famous in New Zealand for its liquor licence, having held its license continuously since 1st July 1860. The original owner, John Hastie, was granted a conditional licence for the ‘Hurunui Accommodation House’. Conditions included; "that he keep eight beds in four bedrooms; shelter for six horses; provide stock yards for yoking up cattle; provide horses for travellers to ford the river; and also direct strangers to a safe fording place." In 1982 a small group of local farmers banded together to save the hotel after it had fallen into disrepair. The community rallied and with help from other sources, including The Historic Places Trust, the Hotel was restored. It is now a thriving hotel and a popular stop for tourists, who can enjoy sampling our finest brews in a New Zealand landmark.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Decided to stop here for a bite to eat on our way home from a day in Hanmer and glad we did.

Food wise we ordered Wedges, Sweet Chilli & Sour cream for $14 which was tasty and good value for money. Then two others orders The Stonegrill Experience Steaks. They were very impressed.

We chose to sit outside then it started to rain but with the umbrella over our table we didn’t get wet. Staff where very friendly and accommodating. Even took advantage of the happy hour drinks.

Would recommend to others.

We stayed in Jesse's Cottage, which was clean and comfortable and nicely combined old-world charm and modern convenience. Lovely peaceful location surrounded by fields and grapevines - the only sounds were from the cattle and the birds. We chose to have dinner at the hotel both nights of our stay because the stone grilled pork and lamb meals were so tasty. Quality meat and fun to cook it ourselves on the hot stone at our table. Accompanied by good sides and drink selection - with very decadent desserts! The service was friendly and efficient, even though the staff were clearly very busy on one night. Couldn't have asked for more.

The hotel itself was closed for renovations so I didn’t get to go in, the place next door was open tho, the food was nice but limited if you just want a sandwich or something.
It was a nice day so the open ness was great, a lovely message written on the mirror in the ladies bathroom. You are beautiful or similar. The stone grill steak you cook yourself was pretty awesome tho!
The seafood chowder definitely recommended filled with yumminess and not full of potatoe like others I’ve had. Hopefully the hotel is open next visit.
Visited with my parents for lunch after driving from nelson, I’d seen the hotel last Xmas when I drove down.

We stopped off for Sunday lunch on the way back from Hanmer and enjoyed the mains of Beef Snitzel and the Stonegrill. Portion sizes were good with both mains served with Fries and Salad. Service was great.

We stopped in at the Hurunui Hotel on the way north from Christchurch, and stayed in their beautiful Jesse's Cottage. A delightful mix of old world stone cottage charm with well appointed modern fixtures in the kitchen and bathroom.
The historic hotel bar and restaurant has a warm cosy pub atmosphere, and I can highly recommend the home smoked stonegrill ribeye for dinner! Wonderful people, great hospitality, and awesome NZ find!

Very Pleasantly greeted upon arrival and made to feel most welcome.
A way more comprehensive menu than expected but then we had very recently heard great reviews of the restaurant food and lovely decor.
He chose Ribs and really enjoyed them and Salads served with.I did the Stone Grill as I love a Steak!
Our small dining partner said her Burger was great and enjoyed the mini donuts and ice cream.
All our meals were served promptly and on well thought out Crockery.
My Steak was spectacular and trust me I know my Steaks!
So good to be able to eat a hot Steak very Rare!
We are lucky to have The Hurunui in our area and will certainly be back.

Stopped for lunch on way to Mt Lyford..
Although half the hotel is being renovated the dining room was spacious and warm.
Attentive service with great food. Perfect place to stop off for a bite. Soup of the day and nachos were perfect
Thanks
