Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stayed for one night prior to taking the White Heron Sanctuary Tour the following day. These motel units are great! Adjacent to the tour office, they are spotlessly clean, comfortable beds and full kitchen so you cater for yourselves or family for all meals. The motel is also directly opposite to the one and only cafe and store in Whataroa. Contact White Heron Sanctuary Tours directly for availablility and the best rate.

You know you're on a good thing when the guide mentions he's taking out just the two of you. To find a family business prepared to turn the key at what must be break even point, just to share their passion, is rare.

Dion gave us a professional and personal experience which was a stand out of this South Island visit. We saw Kotuku (lots of them, and chicks by the dozen), Royal Spoonbills, Harriers, Paradise ducks and forest birds.

Oh, and the jet boat ride was worth the entry price on its own.

Thanks

Very comfortable accommodation. Confortable bed, warm and dry unit.
Everything is very clean. The kitchen is well equipped.
Dion was also very welcoming.
Situated in the quiet town of Whataroa, you are only 20 minutes from Okarito for some fantastic kayaking and 20 min from Franz Josef glacier.

Great family unit, well equipped, immaculately clean and toasty warm winter nights. Dion and his team are welcoming and have a “can do “ attitude to hosting. It wasn’t white heron season but we will be back again to check it out

I chose to stay in one of their 5 cabins and utilise the common toilet / shower block available to the cabins. Easy car parking right next to each cabin, great bed and I enjoyed two very good night's sleep.

Each cabin has it's own cooking facilities and sufficient cutlery and crockery for all. My cabin had a double bed plus a single in one room, and a sofa bed in the other room.

I chose to have lunch at the shop over the road and tea at the local hotel, each within walking distance.

The owners were so friendly & helpful it seems churlish to be negative but the unit is quite old fashioned with flowery decor - classic kiwi motel. We all slept well & cooked a basic meal on the hob, so no complaints apart from the internet hardly made it out to the unit.

Due to a mix up, our original accommodation at Hokitika was given away and we were left stranded during the peak holiday season in NZ. Fortunately, the White Heron had space available.

The rooms were clean and had everything you would expect. The town is a one pub town but is very close to Franz Josef. We had a look at the menu for the pub, but decided to drive down to Franz Josef for dinner.

At sunset, we had a great view of the snow covered Mt. Adams from the motel. We would certainly be happy to stay here again.

This accommodation is very clean and comfortable and is in a great location. We had a small kitchen area, small dining table, settee, a good size shower and toilet area and a decked area outside with table and chairs. Very good value for money in the Franz Josef location. There is a shop/cafe across the road and a hotel which is currently closed for renovation. The nearby road is quite busy but we were not disturbed at night by traffic noise.

Excellent though basic accommodation - one large room with a queen and single bed.

Great bed, huge bathroom, lacked a kitchen sink however bathroom sick plenty large enough if you're OK with that.
Bring food you can microwave - no hob.
Very clean and fresh look and smell, nice towels, good shower.
Covered deck outside the room means you can get wet gear off outside.
We had a great nights sleep without any lights shining outside the room.
Stunning views.

We were looking for accommodation near Okarito and were pleased to find this motel available and at a good price (much cheaper than anywhere in Fox or Franz). Comfortable bed, good shower, large accessible bathroom though the bed was in the way to gain access to the bathroom.
