Detailed Reviews

We stayed 2 nights here & found it very relaxing. Ammenities are very clean & staff at the cafe are super friendly. Were lucky enough to have a weka family visit the camp sites - a rarity for us. Definitely a great place to stay for everyone

We stopped in about half n hour after the shop closed, they made it very easy to check in with the lady living on site. We got a powered site, had easy access to some awesome views and we crossed a swing bridge! Best shower/toilet I've had on a site, very clean with great water temps :)

Spent 3 enjoyable days at this great spot. Lovely campsite with great facilities. Clean, and very reasonably priced. Great swimming in the river that runs alongside the reserve.
Some very good walks nearby. K trig walk highly recommended.

Highly recommend if you are looking for a quiet and beautiful spot to stay. The staff are very friendly and accommodating and the facilities, although basic, were very clean. Hot showers included in the rate. The cafe is excellent with delicious food prepared fresh on site and good coffee. The river is incredible crystal clear water with deep swimming holes. You can hire inner tubes from the office for $10 and go tubing down the river and gentle rapids. Excess noise is not tolerated in the campsite and we were very impressed with how the staff promptly attended to ‘party goers’. One word of advice however - book an unpowered site even if you are in a caravan. We initially booked a powered site and they were located away from the main campsite, across the river in essentially a metal car park surrounded by bush - no outlook or ambience, nowhere for kids to play and it felt remote and unsafe (even though camp management said they have had no issues with security there). However, we asked if we were able to relocate to an unpowered site and it was perfect. Be sure to walk to the waterfall at night (a 5 min walk) to see the glow worm grotto - magical! Family friendly site, we will definitely be back. Bring lots of big spray though - the sandflies are hungry!

Great spot, very private and the security is good with a gate blocking easy vehicle access. Very quiet when we popped in for a coffee at the cafe and wandered down to take a look at the water. There are heaps of walking trails we didn't have time to do. Beautiful place.

My husband, my mom and I are road tripping through New Zealand in a camper van for 3.
We looked at the powered sites at Pelorus, which were ok. But then we drove through the nonpowered sites. We did bring a tent so the 3 of us can spread out some when there is space.
The river is beautiful! And the facilities by the nonpowered sites are great - nice kitchen with a view, hot showers.
It had been raining off and on for a few days so we were a bit nervous about the "flood possibilities" at this site, but it was pretty empty and there were several good sites. The "high" camp sites near the river were actually fairly muddy, but the higher ground sites in the main grassy area were very good. I'd recommend against the 4 right near the drainage area as they were clearly watery.
But the walks around the camp site were beautiful. The drive to Havelock to catch our tours was easy. And this was a beautiful peaceful site to sleep. Even with the rain (which continued) our site stayed dry.
Laundry is 4 NZD to wash and another 4 to dry. The guy and gal at the front desk were both exceedingly helpful.

amazing location and such friendly staff. There are unpowered and powered sites to chose from. so many things to do including hikes to the waterfalls near the camp and swimming in pelorus river under the bridge. Ask the staff about the rings you can use for floating down the river.

Loved this place. The site of really nice, lost of flat grassy tent sites, excellent facilities - kitchen was good, showers were the best of our trip. Nice to have the cafe for coffees (and chips). The best of course is the river swimming which is awesome. Even without having seen The Hobbit swimming here was a highlight of our trip.

We showed up about an hour after the office had closed, but luckily found the onsite park ranger who let us check in for the night. We found a nice cozy spot by the river and enjoyed a leisurely hike on the trail leading out of the campground to the waterfalls. This is a great scenic spot. We stayed here the night before we spent a day on the Pelorus Mail Boat. Facilities are new and clean.

We enjoyed our stay at this new DOC campsite! It has really great facilities, including a closed kitchen/shelter area, clean bathrooms and a spacious terrace with views over the river. This river was, by the way, a set in the second Hobbit movie. The campsite is well-hidden behind the Pelorus Bridge Cafe. It is perfect for the last/first night on the South island of New Zealand, because it is within a reasonable driving distance to the ferry terminal. Go find it!

Yes you are not far from us af all
I will look into Google maps and see where it's taking you.
Have a great day
Hi there thanks for your question unfortunately this is a DOC scenic Reserve so no it is not dog-friendly. If you after a campground that is dog friendly in the area prephaps you would like to check-out Okiwi Bay or Pinedale motor camp.
