After a hard day of activity, this lodge and its staff were just what we needed. Without exception all the staff were very friendly and really , really helpful. The meals are great and the views are excellent. Thankyou, we'll be back!!

Thank you so much for writing. We understand! After that big ride you need a cold beer, a warm smile, a good meal and maybe a soak in the hot tubs! Yes, our staff are just the best. I love them all. We look forward to having you back. I hope the rest of your ride goes well. Kindest regards Louise

Unless this place is I heritage location the 1970s styling is very tired and the calling it a “lodge” is a big stretch. Whole accommodation could do with a serious facelift. The slat bed was so hard we had trouble sleeping. The communal dining however was a fun experience and we got to chat with some lovely people that we wouldn’t have otherwise met. Package included breakfast and dinner but food options for vegetarians or dietary needs limited. Not great value for money.

Hi Cathy, Thank you for writing. I believe and so do many of our guests that the Lodge is a heritage location. There are fewer and fewer of these style of Lodges around and many do appreciate it for it not having been done up to a standard where there is no sense of it's history or character. The communal dining is also something that harks back to a previous era so I'm really glad that you enjoyed that. We have amazing Chefs but we keep the menus simple with only a few options and again, very rarely receive complaints so I'm sorry that you found it limited and not good value. We do have 4 accommodation standards so there are options if when booking you find that particular wing outside your budget. Thank you for staying with us. Kindest regards Louise

Stayed one night on our trip around the South Island and wanted to try somewhere different . The place is certainly not flash but has all facilities you would likely need. We took the room, dinner and breakfast package which for the standard of accommodation is pretty expensive . Dinner was a set menu with 2 options and breakfast was standard fair . In my option what really let the accommodation down was the quality of the bed, as it was so damn hard and no aircon which made for a very uncomfortable night. The staff were helpful and friendly

Thank you so much for staying with us. I always imagine what it must be like for our guests who come here for the first time, taking that turn off the main road and then ending up at the lake with that absolutely spectacular view of the mountains ahead. I imagine on a bike it would be even better. We believe that our prices are fair and would hardly ever receive the comment that we are expensive. We do have 4 standards so that we can cater to all budgets. The property was built in the 50's - 70's so aircon was not a thing. There are plenty of opening windows and doors and we also have Dyson aircoolers at reception available to guests. I'm sorry that you found the bed hard. They are a flexible slat bed with fluffy toppers on the mattress. I have slept on them recently and they are firm but I don't think hard. Thanks for the comments on our beautiful staff. They love to read the reviews so will appreciate your comments. Kindest regards Louise

Our group of 7 just loved staying here on night 2 of our Alps to Ocean Cycle trip. We felt very spoilt and were amazed by the views and comfort of the main lodge area. The lounge is exactly as a lodge should be, very inviting and warm with a beautiful stone fireplace .... and probably a great place to stay even when the weather is awful. Food was excellent and even the special food requirements side of our group were very happy (we ranged from carnivours to flexitarian and vegan, non dairy and food allergies). Lodge has easy access and just a short walk to the lake side beach - with its amazing views. Some of us finished the day with a lovely relaxing stint in the hot spas. We stayed in Huxley wing, which was peaceful and quiet. The night sky was so clear the Milky Way

Thank you Mary for a really lovely review of your stay here. We really appreciate our guests taking the time to comment. We truly believe that it doesn't matter which wing you stay in, that you will be warm and cosy. The Huxley can be a really great option for a quiet area if we are not fully booked and in summer just to have that grassy area outside can be a bonus. We are very fortunate with the Chefs that we have here, truly gifted and our gorgeous gorgeous front of house team, I cannot speak highly enough of them. I think to lie in the hot tubs with the Milky Way above - heaven!! We look forward to seeing you again. Kindest regards Louise

Stayed on our Alps 2 Ocean ride and really enjoyed the experience. The lodge is a wonderful building and an example of brilliant design. The scenery is simply stunning and the staff were universally friendly and helpful. My dinner was disappointing (staffing is very tough for NZ hospitality providers currently). However, the dining room is lovely, company was good and staff great. Breakfast was very good as were our pack lunches.

That is very kind of you to give us such a glowing report. I so love this building too. When we came here 31 years ago and if we'd had the money I'm sure I would have stripped out a lot of what makes it gorgeous today. As time has gone on the beautiful rock art panels in the hallways and the funny old light fittings in the restaurant - all speak of the era that this place was built in. Our staff ARE universally friendly and helpful and it is lovely that they are recognised. I'm so sorry that your meal was disappointing and, as you allude to, we have been struggling to find a Sous Chef. We are now hoping that we have appointed someone but our young guy has been doing his absolute best when he is in the kitchen on his own. When our Head Chef is on, the meals are out of this world! I hope that your Alps2Ocean experience continued to be great. How lovely to cycle slowly through this beautiful landscape. We hope to see you again. Kind regards Louise
