The humid soil of the native forest of northern Patagonia gives birth to the Mushroom Kingdom. An architectural wonder inspired by the plant life of the southern forests. It aims to completely blend into its surroundings and convert itself into a new living component of the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve.

Detailed Reviews
We travelled from the US and UK (grand kids and parents) to this out of way, but beautiful place. The resort is very accommodating and a relaxed atmosphere. Instead of renting a car for 7 people we opted for the resort provided round trip from the Vadivia Airport taking 2.5 hours each way. Not cheap but without stress.
Upon arrival a smooth checkin with accommodation set up at the lodge. We opted for the meal plan (two selected meals from BF, Lunch or Dinner) which makes the vacation more relaxed. No cooking or trying to find a restaurants. BF is buffet style while Dinner choice is meat, fish or vegetarian selection. Wine in Chile is inexpensive and never exceeded US$ 30 for the most expensive bottle available.
The selection of 'activities' such as water rafting, zip line or just hiking is made easy with a tour desk right at the hotel. All the guides could converse in English.
There were many trail for hiking available from short 1 hour to 6 hour treks after which you could cool off in the river or in the hotel pool.
All in all we would not mind to go back. Too bad it takes about 48 hours to get there from NY to Santiago Chile and then onward to Valdivia.

In general I want to mention that my experience was very positive, but I want to highlight a very bad event that we experienced during our stay. On Monday I had my 8th birthday and my partner called the restaurant to please bring me a surprise piece of cake or pie with a candle to celebrate during breakfast. From the restaurant they referred him to the concierge to authorize this small service and this person who served him told him that they were going to charge such a dish to his room. He gave up on it because he considered it absurd, since in any restaurant in Chile (even fast food ones) this courtesy is always available for someone celebrating, a situation that I have experienced many times. It is disappointing to think that a hotel of the category and price such as this one would fall into such a vulgar gesture of charging a piece of cake for someone celebrating their birthday, considering that it was also the hotel's farewell, which left us with a slightly bitter taste. after a sensational stay.

The hotel is an experience without a doubt. We booked at the fungi and although the room was huge it didn't have much daylight. If we had known we would have looked at nothofagus. But the upper room had an extra bed for our son, we were able to install the baby's crib and there was plenty of space as well as a tremendous terrace. The breakfast is not very varied but of quality. The hotel spaces are beautiful, it is striking if several connections are unoccupied or disused. But they do not affect the stay. Very warm staff in general. Unfortunately, upon arrival the slide was occupied by a heavy person for children's fun, which meant that it could not be used for 3 days, there was a delay in its repair and the external pool does not work. The restaurant does not take long to serve, if the menu is not cheap but it is worth it, I draw my attention to the happiness of the chef that day inside the kitchen. The excursions are beautiful, all very protected and guided. We love the lady who stopped by to drop off chocolates at night

Our stay was part of an organized trip so we was not involved in choosing the lodge. It was chosen for its unusual design and interesting history we were told. We were fascinated with the public areas, but they needed more maintenance. That is a challenge. Unfortunately, we were unhappy with the condition of our lodge room.. We were located in the "mushroom" wing where we found the bathroom extremely small, the shower w/o a dish for soap placement, poorly draining shower and the door to the outside "porch/fire escape ladder" would not lock let alone even stay closed! We called the desk about the door, but did not get any resolution to the issue. My husband placed his suitcase next to the door to prevent it from swinging open. We were there for only one night and the food was good in the dining room, but I was glad we were only staying for one night.

The hotel itself is very unusual and beautiful. It appears to be kept up well and built with uniqueness in mind. There is a great shop that sells some hiking gear and swim/spa clothing essentials and a restaurant with good food. The room themselves, however, were just gross. Our room had torn and filthy carpeting, a dark and dank bathroom with a tiny shower and gross jacuzzi bathtub and a floor that sloped downhill so throughout the night one can wakeup halfway down the mattress. The peaceful evenings are accompanied by a cacophony of flushing toilets, footsteps pounding feet and music until 4 am.

The architecture of the hotels is beautiful and the people who work there are very respectful and kind. However, the design of our room was far from comfortable. To start with, the whole room was leaned towards the balcony, which makes it hard to sleep since you have to put a pillow to stop you from rolling over. The bed had only one night table and a night lamp for whatever reason. The room had no kettle or ironing table. The bathroom was small and with little attention to details. The heating of the room was horrible, it varied from hot knocking you down temperature to freezing cold. The swimming pool was nippy but not hot. The food was simple and just ok. The surrounding area is marvelous.

We visited over Christmas with my retired parents and 3 children (17,11,4). I can honestly say this was a spectacular choice and every single person in my difficult to please family fell in love with the hotel and it’s surroundings. Staff were unfailingly friendly, accommodating, welcoming. Food was excellent. Activity bookings were easy and reasonable. Plus the hotel itself is out of a fairy tale, totally unique and special. You won’t find any place in the world quite like it. Nearly a month later and I am still dreaming about our visit.

Huilo Huilo is amazing, the hotel is great, the staff fantastic. We always have a really good time.
If there are issues, they are dealt with promptly. Its one of the best places in Chile, so worth it to visit.

The decorations and furnishing inside are almost completely made from wood. The ambience is great. We stayed at the Reino Fungi and it feels new but the lobby of Magic Mountain looks a bit shabby and old.
We enjoyed the spa which has steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and warm/cool pool. We thought the service could be a little better. For example, we booked the room with an extra bed, which wasn't set up when we checked in. Also the breakfast started only after 8, which was inconvenient for us as we needed to drive to Valdivia to catch our flight.

Set in 100 hectares of land this complex has multiple different types of accommodation available from Camping to Eco friendly lodges (Note: to guests staying at the Reino Fungi Lodge the entrance/reception is in the Hulio Hulio main lodge so don’t drive past it). Our room within Reino Fungi Lodge was clean and well appointed with a safe, minibar and the usual eco bathroom amenities. The room size was enormous as was the bed and you have your own balcony. The downside is WiFi was only available within the common areas which is understandable due to the size and number of interlocking buildings and if you wanted to have your window open to your private balcony you’ll have the smell of wood fire from the Spa wafting through. The complex has 5 “adventure” portals each sporting nature trails and various outdoor activities. (Note: Not all the entrances to the portals are within the main lodge complex. Two of the portals are in the town of Neltume, the portal for the Volcano caves was a further 2km away and the remaining two are within the Hulio Hulio complex. Don’t expect a map to show you where these are, which would have been helpful even if it was hand drawn, you’ll need to ask reception and look out for the Brown tourist road signs). There are various restaurants dotted around the site and town area all of which are a little on the expensive side. This is an unusual collection of eco friendly lodges and caters for both adults and kids.

Hola Kathy,
Saludos,
Equipo Huilo Huilo
