Detailed Reviews
My wife, sister, mother and I booked two rooms for a couple of nights whilst visiting family in Southampton. I booked through Booking.com, and got the rooms for an amazing price (£92 for a King size room and £88 for a twin, both for the two nights). Now for this price I wasn’t expecting much, but was suitably impressed by everything about our stay. There was plenty of parking, staff were friendly and attentive, the room was large and immaculate, and the free breakfast was great. Everything that was needed was in the rooms – iron, ironing board, kettle with brew making kit, free-standing fan, large flat screen TV, huge double bed in the King size room with good quality bedding – really nothing was missing to make our stay perfect. There was a couple of problems, for which I have taken off one rating point. The heaters in the room are either off or on. They are very good at warming the room up from cold, but as there is no way to control the heat it can become a bit uncomfortable in the rooms, and you inevitably have to open windows to cool the room down. They really should have spent a bit more putting in electric heaters with thermostats. The other negative point was the disabled parking. My mum is disabled, and we got back around half-past ten one evening and all of the disabled spaces were full, as were all the spaces close to the main entrance. I dropped my mum off as close as I could and parked at the side of the building. When I got to the main entrance two of the very large expensive cars did not have disabled badges in the windscreen, so I can only assume that the owners were being selfish and parking in these large spaces so as not to get their cars damaged, or were just too lazy to walk any distance to the main entrance. The hotel needs to do more to ensure that it is obvious that they are for disabled drivers only, that badges must be displayed, and that cars will be clamped if the rules are not obeyed, or such like. You have to put your registration into a screen in reception, so a sign by this screen, or even changing the software so that it gives a warning would be going some way to ensure that self-regarding persons do not park in these spaces.

Dear Guest Thank you for your review of our hotel, We appreciate the feedback and we really do hope you stay again in future, the small area just outside the entrance to the left and right is for anyone to park in however the clearly marked disabled bays must display appropriate signage are they will be asked to remove their cars from these zones. My apologies that it wasn't done on this occasion. Kindest regards Joshua Bromage GSM

We stayed one night prior to boarding our cruise, it is not too far to the cruise terminal and reasonably priced with free parking made it a perfect for our needs. The late check out meant we did not have to wait around in the cruise terminal
The room was clean and well maintained and the bed was the right kind of softness for me, so I had a good nights sleep. They have a small dining area where you can get meals and the included breakfast. I thought the breakfast was adequate as you could create your own sausage/bacon sandwich, they did veggie sausages if you asked for them. There was toast, yoghurt, fruit, cereals and drinks, plenty of choice for me
Staff were friendly and as it was the start of Covid they had put in sanitising stations, which was what was required at the time
If I cruise from Southampton again I would definitely stay here again

This Holiday Inn Express is located on the edge of the motorway. So after a long drive, we had no problems finding it and there was plenty of parking available. The car park is free which is a good bonus.
We booked two rooms, the check in was speedy. The staff were friendly and recognised my IHG status. Our room was of a typical HI Express type of room, although I did find even for winter overly warm.
Our room had a double bed, a small sofa, kettle and television. There were a couple of USB chargers in one of the rooms but our room had only one. So it was a good job we had our own USB charger.
The bathroom was again a typical HI Express, a lot is packed in a compact space. My biggest gripe is the soap/shampoo dispenser. Absolutely awful. A design disaster. I spent ages trying to get some soap, it took me ages to have a shower because of this. It is not the typical dispenser that the HI Express normally has in their other hotels.
It has been a few years since I last stayed at a HI Express so I was pleasantly reminded that the included breakfast is rather good. The so called Orange Juice is awful though.
I had cereal, croissants and coffee from the machine. It was a good start to the day.
There is not much to do outside of the hotel. There is a pub which is a short walk away with a bus stop. Although the bus stop is aimed at people who work in various sites nearby.
Getting to Southampton city centre and the port area was straightforward.
We thought this was a good base to explore Southampton, a value for money hotel, it is just a shame that things like a lousy soap/shampoo dispenser let things down.

Nice place to stay. Great breakfast and offers bar and food in the evening. Helpful staff and easy to call a cab to get around. Clean and comfortable room. Not close to town center so will need a cab or car to get around or to train station. Train is easy to Winchester.

Room OK, good lighting, soap dispensers not fit for purpose needs about 20 pushes to get enough to do my hair. Shower OK. Room too warm, even with the fan going and the window open the tiny amount allowed by the window restraint Pillows very hard. We asked, as suggested in the room guide, reception for feather pillows. Yes they could supply, but only one each. Breakfast very disappointing. Cereals still wrapped in cling film at 07:15, . “Clean” teaspoons in a container all jumbled up, many with the spoon side up, not very hygienic. No fried eggs, “We don’t do fried eggs” was the response to the request. Sausages looked OK but I think they are very cheap ones, poor texture and flavour. No marmalade for the toast, honey, raspberry strawberry and apricot, but no marmalade! Annoyingly there was marmalade on Monday morning, which would indicate that someone just didn’t put any put the day before. Tables don’t seem to be cleared through a meal, so we ended up eating in a pile of dirty plates. We were treated to the sight of a staff member clearing plates onto a trolley, scraping the leftover food into a waste container at the side. Why does this have to be done in the restaurant , why not in the back?

A surprisingly great overnight stay. The hotel is minuets from the M5, access is easy, parking is plentiful. Check in was dealt with professionally and quickly. The room was bright and clean, it had an iron, hairdryer, kettle and one of the best showers ever! Fantastic water pressure, plenty of hot water, Fluffy towels too. We ate in the restaurant, it was rather expensive for what it was - £15 for a frozen cheese pizza and chips. None the less it was a bonus for us to be able to eat in house. The waiting staff were all polite and friendly. Joshua was especially helpful and accommodating. Thank you. The bed was comfy, and the room quite, the windows are triple glazed and are very affective in keeping the traffic noise out. Breakfast was self serve toast, eggs, beans, fruit, cereals, yoghurt and a half decent coffee. At less than £50 for a family of 3 including breakfast, it was ideal. We've paid over £100 and got less. Be aware that telephone bookings can be changed at a premium call rate.

The check in member of staff could hardly speak English so it was hard to check in. The room was dirty and we did not feel safe regarding Covid-19 guidelines.
The room carpet was dirty with drinks stains on it, the bed base was very dirty showing stains all around the sides of the base. The shower did not function correctly and the temperature of the water fluctuated from hot to cold during a shower. The bed sheets smelled musty and looked like they had not been cleaned/slept on for a few weeks.
There was no hot food available for breakfast in the morning which was very disappointing for me and my partner. This was at 07:30 and not 09:30 and we expected to be able to 'grab and go' with maybe a bacon or sausage roll to eat in our rooms but the only food available was cereal and warm milk. The coffee machine was not working correctly and I tried twice to use it without success. I asked member of staff at reception if we had missed the hot food for breakfast because it had all gone but she said she would check for me, I was kept waiting at reception for around 5 minutes but she did not come back to me which I thought was shocking service. Even when I checked out at reception to go for some breakfast at McDonald's the person on reception did not speak to me as I handed her my room key/card which again I thought was rude and very poor service.
In my opinion this hotel is not up to standard and needs to be addressed to comply with basic cleanliness and Covid-19 processes. The staff need to be retrained in customer service and the rooms need to be cleaned thoroughly as well as the utilities in the bathroom.
I stayed at the Holiday Inn at Bodmin Moor and the difference was massive, the hotel there was very good, clean and the food was exceptional, also the staff were very informative and gave us great Covid-19 guidance. I have posted a review of the hotel at Bodmin Moor after receiving a link to do so, however I have not received a feedback link for your hotel at Southampton West which for me highlights issues that they do not care about customer care and improving their service.
I am posting this review here because I have not received a feedback review link from this Holiday In at Southampton West, however I have received a feedback review link for the Holiday Inn at St. Austell Cornwall which was superb compared to the one at Soutampton West.

Dear Guest, Thank you for leaving a review of our hotel, We appreciate you taking the time to leave feedback, as we do take feedback seriously, Following from your stay with us, we investigated the issues raised and found and are working on the causes of these problems. As per feedback from our guests we have introduced sausage and bacon baps onto breakfast, so that there is hot food available to guests. We have also completely changed or cleaning procedures to ensure that we are keeping the hotel to a much better standard especially with the current Covid crises. We are so sorry for the issues you experienced as this is completely out of hand for our hotel, our promise is for our guests to leave happy and in this case we have failed you in that target. I would like you to contact the hotel as we would much appreciate offering you a complimentary stay here at our hotel at a future date so you can return and see the hotel and experience it the way we intended Kindest regards and best wishes Joshua Bromage Team Leader

We have just returned from a 3 day stay, we were visiting family in the area and have used this Hotel a few times before.
This was our first time away since Covid so yes we were apprehensive , but as soon as we walked in we were put immediately at ease, lovely warm welcome, and everything was explained clearly concerning all covid requirements.
We had a room on the first floor, which was very clean.(SPOTLESS). so the surface wipes stayed in my bag, anxiety levels dropped immediately.
We requested that no Housekeeping was to be done during our stay, if we required anything we would ask.
Breakfast was the grab n go , which seemed to work well, a few tables were available if you wished to sit in the dinning room , we chose not to as we felt they would be more use for families.
There were plenty of sanitisation stations in the public areas, and some were wearing masks, but quite a few were not,
We did have a issue on the 1st night when a couple of guests thought it acceptable to argue in the corridor at 2.15 am, and early the following morning a couple also thought it acceptable to leave a dog in their room for over an hour, lets just say the dog wasn't that impressed either.
Not the Hotels fault, just inconsiderate guests. thankfully it was not repeated the next couple of nights, so a good nights sleep was had.
So Thanks again for a lovely stay, and a special Thank You to the House keeping staff, keep up the good work, .We hope to see you all again in the near Future, Well if Boris says we can lol.

We had connecting rooms as two families which was comfortable and very clean. I dont usually write reviews but I really wanted to make the effort to say how amazing the customer service was at this hotel. They have set the standard extremely high. We checked in 14th October around 2/3pm so whoever the two guys were who were working then deserve medals!

Spent one night at Holiday Inn Express Southampton West and that was more than enough.
At first glance the room seemed OK but closer inspection revealed hair on the bathroom floor and stained towels. I didn't dare use the tea-making facilities as I was unhappy with the standard of cleanliness in the room generally.
The pillows were like breeze blocks and we didn't sleep well as a result.
Breakfast was a sorry affair of pre-measured portions of cereal in disposable plastic bowls with the dregs of milk left in the flask, bacon or sausage rolls (no vegetarian option) croissants and oranges. The area where breakfast was laid out was small and U-shaped. Limited space and requirements for social distancing meant only a few people could be in this area at one time so I felt very pressured to grab something quickly and leave. Some tables were available to sit at but I didn't know whether they had been cleaned or not so we took food back to our room and hoped for the best.
It was late when we got there and I had a tired child with me so didn't raise any issues with the staff. Couldn't wait to get out of there in the morning to spend another day at Paultons Park.
This hotel is set up for the business traveller and really should not be marketed at families through Paultons Park short breaks. There was no children's activity pack available as I had been lead to believe through the Paultons Park website.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. We will definitely not be returning.

Good Evening B5324BCkj Thank you for your recent review regarding your recent stay with us at Southampton West, your feedback is important to us. I am sorry that you didn't have a great stay with us. My apologies that we fell short of our room cleanliness, if you had been told at the time on check in, that if you found your room not up to cleanliness standard then to come and see us and we would have gladly room moved you or re cleaned the room for you, as per out IHG clean promise. As for the breakfast, yes it is a small u shaped lay out, but i cannot do anything with this, we do have a vegetarian option of Linda McCartneys vegetarian sausages that are available on request there should have been a sign out, but i will investigate into this. All our tables are cleaned and sanitised once the occupants have left, i am looking into putting something on the table to say so. Regarding the activity packs unfortunately we cannot provide these at the moment. That is something that i will bring up with Paulton's Breaks. If you could contact me on Manager@expresssouthampton.co.uk,.as i would like to discuss this further with you. I look forward to hearing from you. Kind Regards Marie Hotel Operations Manager

Hi
Unfortunately we do not have sea view rooms at Southampton West as we are away from the sea.

Hello,
We're not that far, but you will need to drive down and use a parking company or get a taxi from the hotel, roughly 10 minutes by car
Apologies for the late reply,
Parking is free at most express hotels but always check before hand
Not sure about pizza issue personally I would avoid and go to the pub/restaurant it’s a 10 min walk and you can see it from the front entrance of hotel, just follow the road out and turn left at top
