Motel is adequate for one night stop over. Basic essentials. What it does have going for itself is a spacious entertainment area which has a cupboard full of board games. Shower has okay pressure, check in was a breeze, others from our group stayed at nearby Asure nearby and were not allowed on site to visit us, so we visited them and WISH we had of stayed there! If staying longer would suggest elsewhere otherwise one night is fine.

Oli the host super friendly backed up by great staff who have the whole well equipped place spic and span. Everything you need and great value. Good local knowledge for activities and keen to share. Lovely hot shower. We were given the disability enabled room which had direct access to outdoors. The windows are well covered with insect netting for good reason this IS southern Westland but worth the visit.

My father and I arrived by bicycle, just after dark after a mechanical issue. The owners Ollie and Adele were friendly and helpful. Our bikes were stored in a locked shed. We had a second night here because of rain forecast the next day. Adele cheerfully organised our laundry, for which we were very grateful. The general store is very close by (closes 6pm). We didn't check out anything else in Haast. There seemed to be multiple room configurations available and all looked in good condition, clean and roomy. Our twin room with own bathroom was clean and very spacious. Comfortable beds and good sheets and towels. Extra duvets on the beds for winter. Could do with some hooks and places to put things other than the floor. Plenty of tea/coffee with a kettle. The door handle was faulty and wouldn't lock, but the owner assured us he would get a new handle installed. As it was so quiet, we didn't mind leaving our room unlocked. Shower door broken so more puddles on the bathroom floor (looks as if it has been broken for some time). We were given 2 complimentary wifi vouchers but they didn't seem to last for the stated amount. There is a large communal kitchen for backpacker customers, reasonably well-stocked. Communal living area seems to be a central covered courtyard - pretty chilly on a rainy winter day but probably lovely in the summer. Great selection of books and some games. At the other end of the building is a smaller, newish kitchen for motel customers - very well stocked and very clean. (I'd recommend trying to avoid a bedroom close to this as it could be noisy). Motel customers also had a lounge with dining table and couches and TV - this was warm and cosy.

I found the property to be tired, needing modernisations, they gave 250mb of internet, then wanted to charge for connection, the kitchen equipment was in need of a wash, cups, glasses and knives etc needed cleaned There was a lack of Covid 19 protection, no reception sanitiser, generally I was unimpressed, Not great value for money, you can do better in Haast

We were making breakfast the morning after our stay and 2 friends (who were not staying at the hostel but passing through Haast by chance) called in to drop something off. They were in a hurry and had no intention of hanging around but were 'caught' by the owners wife who SHRIEKED at them to get out. They left hastily and we were horrified. After this, the awful owner stormed into the kitchen and began shouting at us for our friends dropping in As this was happening my partner was cooking breakfast and the deranged man accused him of using his kitchen knife threateningly. At this point I became hysterical. This man wasn't being unpleasant, he was being vindictive and LYING. He called me a B***h and screamed at me to get out, he was calling the police and still saying my partner had pulled a knife on him. I decided to go to the police station next door myself as this was a vicious lie. At this point I was hyperventilating and really panicking - we are working towards residency and I was terrified that this nasty lie could jeopardise things. The police station was closed so I called the number provided as I was genuinely scared what would happen next. The owner panicked when he saw I was serious about involving the police and his entire attitude changed. He wouldn't take any responsibility for the situation getting out of control but in the end he apologised for his wife (not for himself). I would rather sleep outside with the sandflies than come anywhere near this place again.
