Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you value your bicycle and it’s security overnight then don’t stay here. Owner was adamant no bicycle could enter the building, not even lifting it along corridor and through room to keep on the fenced in terrace. Nor lifting over the fence onto the outside terrace. He was concerned we’d scuff the walls and dirty the floor. Fair enough if it was freshly decorated and pristine but decor was dated (including vinyl wood-effect wall panels which could be easily wiped clean) and faded cheap carpets.
We were offered a flimsy metal unlocked shed for the bikes out the back of the building and open to the road. Relying on our own bike lock which is not the strongest as we’re bike touring so can’t carry the big gold standard locks.
Most expensive place we’ve stayed in 6 weeks bike- touring in New Zealand and the least welcome we’ve felt. Bikes were fine but we spent a night worrying about them.

Motel is adequate for one night stop over. Basic essentials. What it does have going for itself is a spacious entertainment area which has a cupboard full of board games. Shower has okay pressure, check in was a breeze, others from our group stayed at nearby Asure nearby and were not allowed on site to visit us, so we visited them and WISH we had of stayed there! If staying longer would suggest elsewhere otherwise one night is fine.

Oli the host super friendly backed up by great staff who have the whole well equipped place spic and span. Everything you need and great value.
Good local knowledge for activities and keen to share. Lovely hot shower. We were given the disability enabled room which had direct access to outdoors. The windows are well covered with insect netting for good reason this IS southern Westland but worth the visit.

I booked this room last minute (the day of having to travel )
I spoke to a lady when I phoned up to book and explained to her that this was an unexpected trip and was would not be arriving until 10 30-11pm that night. She asked the manager and told me it was fine ..no problem at all.
I arrived late (25 minutes ).
The lady that greeted me was so rude. As soon as I parked my car she came storming out and started having a go at me for my late booking and arriving late and how she was so tired because of me . She walked in front of me then slammed the door.
I was actually tempted to sleep in my car as she made me feel so unwelcomed and uncomfortable until she realized how upset she made me and then decided to be nice.
I am very disappointed in how I was treated and sincerely hope that this was a one off and that other visitors are not treated like this.
I will not be recommending this place to any of my guests that use my tour company that are looking for recommendations where to stay!

This place is the WORST place that we have ever come across - we left after 20 minutes because the place is filthy. It is a disgrace that BBH actually list this hostel.

On arrival you are greeted by a big sign saying 'Smile you are on CCTV' - this instantly made me think that the place must be unsafe as Haast is literally just a stop-over township with nobody around so why the need for CCTV? Maybe because you have to walk by all the rooms and through the kitchen to get to the office (a closed hatch that you have to ring a bell to get the manager (an old very grumpy obnoxious man) to attend to you and is not happy to be disturbed.

He told us upon check-in that the toilet and shower at the end of our corridor had been locked as he is 'pissed off' with guests spending too much time in there! The only available toilet & shower were located beside the office so that he could 'monitor the use of water and facilities by guests' -unfortunately this did not translate into actually cleaning them because the (one) toilet (for both males and females) was disgusting and unusable (thanks to the smell and tiny window not to mention the pubic hair on the toilet seat). I dared not take a look into the shower cubicle (again a unisex job).

Our room had not been hoovered despite being the only guests there and the bed linen was not fresh. We were the only two guests at the hostel - we knew this because we had to walk past every other room to get to the office and all of the doors were wide open and despite having made a reservation 2 days ago the manager hadn't bothered to clean the room.

There was also no working internet or no tv room to chill out in. Also there is only 1 plug socket in the room and it was for the heater so we decided to get our money back and cut our losses. On out way out the Manager came after us to give out to us got not making the bed?! We were there for about 20 mins and didn't use the bed. I told him the room was not clean and we the toilet and shower (which were at the opposite side of the building to our bedroom?!) we're not satisfactory either.

The 'host' Ollie got very aggressive with us and told us that he would report us to BBH for not giving him 12 hours cancellation notice and because we were the only guests booked in for the night he could have taken the day off!

In short, keep driving through Haast - it's a miserable little hole and this filthy backpackers is run by a bitter, racist, miserly old grump. We continued on to Wanaka which is so much better - lots to do, lots of accommodation and a lovely cozy clean hostel ;) I wish we had read the trip advisor reviews before booking here as most are spot on and it would have saved us a lot of time.

I got there pretty early afternoon and was the first guest there I guess thats why the owner let himself be really rude to me. When I arrived I asked about wifi to which the owner gave a very unfriendly tone that I should read the nearby information and not ask him. I also asked what can I do interesting in the area in which he basically didnt even reply. He was of course not really doing anything important and was at the middle of watching tv. Later I wanted to go to the toilet and realized one toilet didnt have any and the other one was flooded. I went to the owner and told him that and he went to check the flooded one and started SHOUTING at me for not closing and of the tubs that was apparently causing the flood. I really dont see why am I supposed to look for the problem in a flooded bathroom at a hostel but I guess its the type of person that feels they are doing you a favour when you are paying 35$ a night to them. I booked the first bus in the morning and left the place as soon as I could.

Our group arrived after a 12 hour day tramping (at the end of an 8 day trip), although 3 of our group were staying down the road. These 3 came over to visit for dinner and the manager yelled at all of us, getting rather personal with the insults, and forced us all to leave and eat our dinner outside of the backpackers grounds in the carpark in the rain. He is friendly enough until you pay, then turns very hostile and doesn't give a damn at all because he already has your money. In his words: " Girlie, I don't care at all about you fellas, I just have a business to run!" There are plenty of other places to stay in Haast that will treat you in a much more friendly manner.

The manager (owner??) is not a happy man. The extremely rude and unprofessional way he dealt with us still upsets me a couple weeks later as I type this. I take a little solace in seeing reviews here that my wife and I are not the only people he's offended, but our experience at this hostel was one of my worst travel experiences ever. If you are forced to stay here due to the lack of any other options, my advice is to stay clear of the managing staff and depart as early as you can.
On a positive note, I will say that most everything else about our NZ vacay was very nice. Beautiful country!

Stayed at Wilderness Motel/Backpackers last night. Couldn't fault it. Stayed in the motel side and had a large double room with ensuite. Clean, excellent well equipped kitchen close by. Big TV in the room and a rec room with a shed load of dvds to watch for free. Owner was a gentleman. Will definitely stay again on our next trip. The backpackers side had a very lovely common room with rustic decor and coffee machine etc. Wouldn't be shy of staying there either.
PS. The Hard Antler restaurant 100m down the road was very good too. I have read some duff reviews about both of these places but that's not how we found them.

We got stuck in Haast because the road to Wanaka was closed at 4pm. We decided to stay at the Wilderness Backpackers because our "Rough Guide to New Zealand" book described this place as a "welcoming, great value spot", it couldn't be farther from the truth. Instantly we got an eerie feeling when we arrived outside like we were in a sequel to deliverance. We checked in and went to our room, it wasn't much but it was only for the night. There was one socket in the room which a tiny little heater was plugged into so I went to ask for an adapter, this is were I got my first taste of Ollie the owner. He could not comprehend why I would want an adapter when there was loads of other sockets in the kitchen and the hallway. We left our bags in the room, turned the heater on and went for a meal up the street, which was excellent.
When we returned the room was still freezing and the heater was broken. We tried to tell Ollie but he wouldn't even listen to us, after 20mins trying to get his attention, he finally heard our complaint but still would not check it out instead he shouted commands at us from the office. Eventually he came to our room and tried to convince us that it wasn't broken. Even though if you licked it your tongue would stick to it. Ollie's answer was that we don't need a heater because of the quality of the duvet and our body heat would heat the room, even though it was 7pm and we weren't feeling like bed just yet. He explained that "he had two Asians here last night who had no complaints", which was great comfort to us.
It was a very cold night and we left first thing in the morning, just happy to be getting away. We have come to the conclusion that Ollie must be responsible for the rock falls at Diana falls causing to road closure otherwise nobody would ever stay at his place. He makes Basel Fawlty look like Conrad Hilton. Stay clear at all costs, the only bad experience we've had after 3 months travelling from Aukland to Queenstown.
