Stayed 2 nights at the Bay Road Motel. Prior to arriving, had a delicious freshly cooked whitebait sandwich from a food truck in Haast township which set the scene of being away from the city.

Motel unit was very spacious. Self catered for all meals. As others have said, wifi access is difficult. We connected briefly to our mobile data when sitting outside only.

Drove up to Haast Beach twice during our stay. Saw a pod of dolphins, and we had a picnic on the beach. Not a soul around and felt like our own private beach. A bit chilly to swim in the water but was nice all the same. Didn't venture down to Jacksons Bay as we had been there on a previous trip. Walked to the Hapuka Estuary Walk which was only 10 minutes stroll away.

Didn't use the washer / dryer but if on a longer stay, it would be appreciated.

Price paid was less than we expected, which is always a bonus.

Watch for the sandflies. They are everywhere, but windows have screens. Sliding door doesn't but there is a net curtain.

We arrived with the office closed - in typical West Coast fashion, a note on the office door "Frank - Room 2, key in door, back soon". Our room was clean, tidy & warm. Our wee dog enjoyed sitting out front in the sun. A welcoming motel, yet quiet & a nice place to stay. Thank You.

We spent 2 nights at the Bay Road Motel during a recent trip to the west coast. We were impressed with the accommodation, finding it very comfortable and quiet. We initially chose this place because it is dog-friendly, as we like to travel with our 2 wee dogs. It is located in a quiet rural setting around 16km (10min) out of Haast town down the Jackson Bay road, so a good jump off point for trips down to Jackson Bay. The nearest eateries are back up the road in Haast.

Our unit was light and airy with a functional kitchenette and large bathroom. It was one of 2 duplex style units on site. The bed was comfortable and we had a nice restful sleep. Our only small complaint was that the wifi system really didn’t work well – very weak signal. And the mobile phone signal was very weak as well. But that was only a minor inconvenience. Overall we had a great stay and would highly recommend this motel to other travelers in Haast.

Check in was easy and a freindly welcome from the manager. Our unit was well presented and clean and well equiped. Already warmed up for us on arrival. Good value and a good location for travel on the highway.

The motel is a long drive from the main road and from shops bars and restaurants in Haast, but is in a quiet setting. The unit was clean and had plenty of room and all facilities you could need, including a heater to dry our wet clothes!

Remote motel, so bring your food with you. Very spacious and comfortable with good kitchen for a motel.
Added bonus was the washing machine and drier in the bathroom, use included in the very reasonable cost.

We stayed here for only one night and I would not stay here again. It is actually a long way down Jacksons Bay Road which we felt was deceptive, as it said in its advertisement that it is in Haast).

The first thing I noticed immediately was the smell of fish!! It was really strong. Being an ex-fishy I knew straight away that fish had been in the unit.

Secondly, the TV didn't work and I can't understand the owner not fixing the problem - the guest book had lots of complaints yet nothing had been done.

Even the faded unreadable handwritten instructions taped to the remote control had been overlooked by management day after day after day after day...if you tape instructions, why leave them there when they are unreadable and exasperating?

Very poor response to multiple complaints in the guest book - particularly the multiple complaints about the TV being mounted at a neck-breaking height. It's as if management don't listen to the negatives. Do they read the book even???

If TV and Wi-Fi don't work (neither worked), don't say you have it. Be honest. People appreciate honesty and they won't feel conned.

This motel is quite remote, situated part way along the 50km distance between Haast & Jackson Bay - but a remote, peaceful location was just what we were looking for, so it suited us very well. The room had a lounge, full kitchen, 2 bedrooms and a bathroom - so plenty of room for the two of us to spread out. The shower was the best one we had on our whole 10 day South Island roadtrip. And the washing machine and dryer were very much appreciated as we were halfway through our trip and had accumulated a bit of washing by then. The room had a couple of chairs to sit outside on, and enjoy the peace and quiet of the isolated location. There is no beach access, but we drove about 5 minutes up the road to Hannah's Clearing (where there is a shop and petrol station) and viewed the amazing West Coast sunset from the beach there. The peace and quiet and lack of any streetlights or other lights meant we had the best night's sleep of the whole trip.

we only spent one night, but it would have been wonderful to spend more time, since it was such a charming and neat place. the living area is very spacious and the furniture is simple but very tasteful. the bathroom had laundry/dryer and everything was incredibly clean. the room was in a cabin that contained two rooms. nobody else was around so it was incredibly quiet. the ocean is very very close and you can hear it at night. we would love to go back and stay longer and relax.

The motel is a little way out of Haast on the way to Jackson Bay but its quiet, peaceful, and pet friendly. Nice enough basic apartments, a little older but has everything you need incl washer and dryer, cooking facilities etc. WiFi did not work down our end of the property and the owner seemed a little cranky but I would recommend.
