We booked a single room and a double room for a total of 3 people for 3 nights at the Hotel Kleiner König. We were warmly welcomed by a very nice lady. The key handover was quick and uncomplicated. First of all: the reception is not permanently manned. It is only manned at the agreed arrival and departure times. If you are late, the room keys are kept in a small kind of "safe" which is opened by entering your last name.

The hotel is a somewhat older building - the floor in the hallway and the stairs creak when you walk. There is a fridge with chilled drinks on site from which drinks can be taken out. Payment is made upon departure. The rooms can be opened with an NFC chip or alternatively with a classic key, just like the entrance door. The rooms are beautifully designed, clean and offer everything you need - mini fridge, sufficient storage space, hair dryer, towels, safe and much more! Perhaps particularly interesting for couples: there is a mirror hanging above the double bed, which may offer some exciting and beautiful moments.

The breakfast included in the price (from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.) offers a small but fine buffet - various rolls, toast, small croissants, dumplings, cakes, fruit, yoghurt, muesli, various types of sausage & cheese, tomatoes & cucumbers, scrambled eggs, eggs, various jam spreads, honey and Nutella leave little to be desired. There is also coffee and various juices. There is a small play area in the dining room for small children.

Departure was also very straightforward, the room must be vacated by 11 a.m. The only thing I have to complain about: We were charged the tourist tax for the days, but were not given a tourist pass. Not a big deal for us, but still a bit questionable. We didn't ask about it explicitly, because we only noticed it afterwards.

Conclusion: The Hotel Kleiner König is a small but fine hotel in which you can quickly feel at home. The prices are very reasonable and the service is great. A clear recommendation!

A very nice hotel situated in the middle of the castle and the town Fussen. We had a really big room with a nice bathroom and big jaquzzi to enjoy for our anniversary trip. The room was especially super clean and all the towels were intact.
The location is good enough although need to go outside of the hotel to have the view of the castles. It got really quiet at night but we were able to get food and even nice bar, just a short drive from the hotel to Fussen. Recommend for couples and morning breakfast spread was good with lots of bread and food to choose from and the owner was extremely friendly.

This is a small hotel hidden in a beautiful vally with the Castles looking down on it. Not too close to the castles, but close enough. Was very clean, comfortble and the help were amazing. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys beautiful scenery and quiet location.

Despite the pleasant stay, I must unfortunately say that the hotel did not meet my expectations....the person who welcomed us upon our arrival did not speak any English...there were more than a few difficulties in communicating. Decent breakfast with a decent selection of both savory and sweet. Room with a transparent BATHROOM DOOR (never seen this in my entire life) and a very low ceiling in some places (when you got out of bed I hit my head on the ceiling).

This is a lively hotel on the outskirts of Schwangau in a place called Horn.
When we booked in we were greeted by two delightful young ladies that treated us like V.I.P's! They were fun and welcoming and after a chat about the reason for our holiday (joint anniversaries) they gave us a complimentary bottle of wine.
The rooms were large with great balconies affording the best views across the mountains and to the nearby castles.
We enjoyed a few drinks on our balcony, from the honesty bar, while listening to the sounds of the cow bells in the fields opposite. It was so peaceful.
The decor is basic but the room and large well appointed bathroom was absolutely spotless! With some lovely quirky little touches you will have to find if you visit :)
We were a bit surprised by the very large mirror on the ceiling above the bed!! :)
It was only a short walk to our chosen restaurant for the night so worked out well.
Breakfast was continental buffet style and had all you could want.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely use again!

The owner and the staff are so so nice and helpful. I was an hour late for the breakfast intending to go ask for microwave to get my leftover warmed up but it was heart winning when I see the breakfast is still there for me. Totally recommend it.

Pluses - Friendly and helpful staff, lovely clean rooms, nice big bathroom, easy to get to, parking right outside, great view, nice breakfast, honour bar.
Minuses - hard to find entrance, no elevator, weird art, no wifi.
However we'd stay there again.

Lovely friendly hotel and a very good price at 70 Euro for a last minute booking (literally - we thought we'd arrange to camp but the campsite was closed). We had a very big, light and airy room with a balcony. Good breakfast with a plentiful range of continental breakfast staples. The staff spoke good English and were really helpful - it was the perfect hotel for us. There was a bit of traffic noise in the morning as it's just off the main road but as a city dweller that didn't bother me. The location is good with a 15-20 min walk to either Fussen old town or Schwangau's restaurants.

Our room (12) was large, comfy and airy. It was something like being in your own home but in Bavaria. The family members that run the Kleiner Konig are friendly, basically conversant in English, and helpful with restaurant suggestions, walks, and things to do in the area (besides the obvious castle exploring). Breakfast is very good and substantial enough to sustain one for the first half of the day with eggs and fresh breads and pastries and yogurts and fruits and cheeses and meats. As you would expect in rural Germany, Kleiner Konig is impeccably clean and kept up. The hotel, really more bed and breakfast, is about 5 minutes drive from Fussen and about the same from Neuschwanstein castle. Without the castles this area would probably only receive very light and mostly domestic tourism, but with the castles it can seem suffocating during the day as planet earth descends from the buses. Fortunately there are actually plenty of other reasons to give the area a couple of days including hiking, biking, walking, the lakes, the countryside, and Fussen itself. My daughter and I took a lovely jog along the bike/walk path that is just outside the hotel and ended up beside one of those lakes. It was a beautiful way to start the morning before the onslaught of the tour buses. Because of Neuschwanstein the checklist tourism is on full display here during the day. Do yourself a favor, whether you come in on train or car, stay the evening and catch the sights with fewer people. The castle is best either first thing in the morning when it all opens up or late afternoon when the residual of the invasion is still around, but is rapidly diminishing and racing for the tour busses. By seeing it at those times (and you can get your tickets online if you want to go inside the castles... but honestly it is the outside and the dramatic setting that is the draw and unless you have never seen the inside of a castle I would skip it in favor of hiking the trails or wandering the countryside) you might get to have some time where your primary activity is not trying to get a photo without a bunch of other people in it, or tripping over the ice cream licking hordes. If you give this area an overnighter rather than a quick hit-and-run from Munchen you will get to feel the calmer, softer, slower character of southern Germany with the awesome beauty of the Alpine foothills, grassy fields and farmlands, and rich blue lakes that wiser German tourists come here to enjoy. Away from the castles this is terrific location to slow down a little. (On the way to get gas in the early morning "traffic," three cars, I was stopped as a herd of cattle crossed the road in town and strolled out to pasture.)

The rooms are very nice and clean, the bed comfortable, and the atmosphere relaxed. The staff, particularly "Chef," is extremely helpful. He helped us plan our days in the area to see the very best attractions, and alerted us to local events that we would otherwise not have heard of. I particularly like the location. On the edge of town across from a cow pasture. I love hearing those cow bells early in the morning. It's so peaceful.

I’m going to answer this myself in case anyone else is arriving by train! You can get the bus from Füssen train station- numbers 73 or 78. It’s a 10 minute journey. Ask for Schwangau Horn and it’s the stop just before the bust of King Ludwig. The hotel is right by the bus stop so if you tell the driver the hotel name s/he will probably know it. For taxi- there is a number advertised at the train station. Ring this and it should cost around 7-8 Euros.
