A very nice modern, still cozy hotel, rooms are nice and bathrooms up do date - only remark, the shower is large, but the floor is too slippery. Front desk is very friendly, they secured tickets for us for the castle visits, which we were not able to do from Canada. A big thank you. Restaurant excellent.

What a lovely find. We arrived after a day of driving the Romantic Road and loved the relaxing nature. This was about halfway through our 16 day German adventure and we were in this area for one night with castle tickets for the next morning and then moving on. I wish we had more reason to stay longer. The room was lovely, probably the nicest we stayed in on our trip (and they were all quite nice). Nice balcony, good sized washroom with counter space (something missing in many hotels). We ate dinner and breakfast (which was included) at the restaurant and both were very good. Our after dinner walk around the area brought us to some neat paths with great views of the castles we would be visiting in the morning. THe whole place is just magical. Would highly recommmend.

Booked for a night on the way north with plans to visit Neuschwanstein. Those plans were dashed by thick fog, but what a great place to stay. Large comfortable room, excellent restaurant, and a warm welcome.

Will stay again next time I try for a Neuschwanstein trip.

Highly recommended.

This hotel is one of the finest in Schwangau. We loved everything about this hotel from its quaint Bavarian charm to the hospitality of the owners and its staff. We couldn't have been more well pampered. We felt at home and welcomed from the second we walked into the pristine lobby. We rate this hotel highly because of the excellent food, the quality of the rooms, the central location and for the value pricing of the rooms.

Firstly, the hotel itself has a large ample parking lot directly across from the hotel. It also has a large, open "yard area" to the side of the hotel that has a park bench and playground toys for children. It is a wonderful place to catch a relaxing moment staring at the magnificent mountains directly in front of the hotel. The lobby itself is an informative place. Mrs. Helmer has taken the time to obtain and provide brochures and guides for the entire area. This is a big help because their is so much to do in this lovely and fascinating place.

The hotel has a wonderful restaurant. Because breakfast is included (in the room rate) for all guests it does not serve a menu breakfast. This is true of all hotels in the area as far as I am aware. It serves an excellent cold buffet breakfast with rolls, mountain cheeses, breakfast cold cuts, yogurts, cereals, etc. You have a choice of breakfast beverages and coffee of course. Dinner is quite an experience complete with waitress dressed in traditional Bavarian clothing (reminds me of something in a Disney fairytale movie). The list of wines and beers are extensive. They also make their own ice cream and the desserts are heavenly and come served in a 5 star hotel fashion.

Secondly, the rooms are sparkling. The rooms have a typical european style bathroom, meaning that it is not large but more than sufficient and ultra-clean. The bathroom has only a shower (not bathtub). This is also also standard in Germany. We appreceiated the little extra touches in the bathroom like plenty of towels, Dove hand shop dispensers, shampoo and conditioner dispensers in the shower (especially if you forgot it), etc. The amenities include internet via the TV, digital safe, small table and chair complete with wine glasses (in sitting area), balcony with mountain view, sitting area and armoire with shelves for your clothing. We were also personally shown to our room and we asked if she could make us a dinner reservation in the hotel, and she simply asked us what time and our table reservation was set! Upon arrival, we were quickly seated at "our" table.

The hotel is located at the bottom of the Alps and has a nice view of the Neuschwanstein Castle. The wintergarten cafe is surrounded by all windows that give a direct view of the mountain. It is simply breathtaking. During our stay after a short rain, we saw the most vibrant rainbow coloring the sky!

The average price for this hotel is about 48 Euros per person, per night. This is quite a bargain (by about 30 Euros or $40.00) in comparison to the average rates of the hotels around it. We stayed in another hotel for part of our stay for more money and it didn't even come close to the Hotel Helmerhof. We enjoyed our stay so much and we can't wait to return back!

Traditional family run establishment with staff wearing traditional bavarian dresses.
Really nice location about 2km outside Fussen between the Forggensee and the Alps.
We got a very good room, with a balcony overlooking the castles and mountains.
Really nice to be situated in the scenic countryside.

Abount 10 minutes walk on small country roads to the Königliche Kristall-Therme which was very nice - we used this rather than the Sauna facilities in the hotel, because of the larger scale of activities.

Breakfast was very good - some intersting regional produce.

We had intended eating in Fussen but ended up eating at the hotel dining room each night for convenience. Hearty german food - good quality. Reasonably priced.

Castles are theoretically within walking distance but we drove to save time. Had to walk up to Neuschwanstein from car park anyway as buses do not run when it is snowing. (20 mins fast walk)

Overally very pleasant and relaxing and very good value for money.

I have to give the Helmerhof, in Schwangau, Germany, the very highest of ratings.
It is a beautiful, quaint, classy hotel in the Bavarian Alps, in the town close to the Neuschwanstein (read: the Disney castle prototype) and Hohenschwangau castles, hiking in the valley and mountains, and fun on the lake. We were there to visit the castles.
I had made a mistake in my reservation--for 1 and not 2. MY mistake. When I arrived they bent over backwards to accommodate my wife and me. Thank you, danka. A very class act.
Their location is excellent, in the quiet village of Horn, next to Schwangau. Their continental breakfast (REAL continental, not what we Americans have come to think) had a huge array of delicious items. And, it is included in the quoted price.
I do not know when I will next travel to Schwangau, but the when I do, the Helmerhof will be my first choice.

Just by my subject line, you know we had the best stay of our lives . The first time at the Helmerhof was the summer of 1999. We simply booked here, due to the location and proximity to the Neuschwanstein and Schwangau castles. It was a stab in the dark, but our family certainly enjoyed every single second and it offered up not only a good home base, so we could visit Fuessen, but also Oberammergau, too. The hotel is sort of situated in a country setting just outside of Fuessen, but the impressive castles are in view from the hotel.

Our second trip to this area was the summer of 2006. This time our children were older with one married who came along to show her husband Germany, plus our favorite hotel in the entire country of Germany. Again, it was no dissappointment. The staff is friendly and very helpful in every way possible to assure you of a good and pleasurable time not only at their hotel, but to offer up suggestions of the best way to see the sights. Each time we stayed we got a little apartment that offered a two bedrooms, one good-size bathroom, and a nice little living room (plus TV) area complete with a little stove and refrigerator should you wish to have lunch in the room. The balcony was a plus, because you want to be a part of this magnificent place and to sit and just enjoy. It is certainly to me the closest I can get to heaven when I look out and see the towering mountains and also a view of the castles. The restaurant offers up some of the BEST food of which, my husband is still talking about to this day. His goulash put a smile on his face that I will never forget and my son-in-law still reminds me of our delicious meal of Wiener schnitzel with delicious white asparagus.

While staying here we felt like we were a part of the locals. Hard to describe, but it was such an accommodating place you just feel like you are part of the family. It's not a city hotel, but a country one and that was what we wanted. It's our own little secret place that we love to stay at and we will ALWAYS come back when we book our next trip to Germany. I promise.

P.S. I had to select May 2012 as the time I traveled, but as I wrote it was both in 1999 and 2006...hmmm...seems like another trip is due for us.

This hotel was great. We showed up in the afternoon and we were upgraded to a suite. It was very lovely and we were cold and tired. The lady that spoke English was so helpful. She got us a bottle of wine and showed us our room. Helped us decide on supper and was just all around fabulous. We didn't have much time to spend here but we did enjoy it. Easy to find! Dinner was great in the restaurant. I wish the weather would have been nicer so we could enjoy the outside seating and views but we enjoyed regardless.
