Our room was spacious and modernly furnished. We arrived with a dog. Dog towels were available both in the entrance area and in the room.
The spa area offers various saunas, relaxation rooms, etc. Everything is very clean and offers a modern Alpine flair.
At the reception and in the Spar area, you can get drinks from refrigerators that have to be charged to the room on a trust basis. The prices are absolutely OK. Directly opposite the hotel there is an EDEKA that is open until 8 p.m. The train station is a 2-minute walk away. Basically very centrally located. We were only here for 3 nights, but we could imagine staying longer. Thank you very much, we had a very nice stay.
Everything is very lovingly and tastefully furnished and designed. We can only recommend this hotel and praise it highly.
We will spend our Oberstdorf vacation here again and again and we will also recommend this hotel to our adult children.
Thank you very much, dear Fischer family, for this wonderful stay in your beautiful house. Yours, Frank and Anja Hausendorf
City center 10 - 15 minutes walking distance.
Good breakfast and buffet is always refilled.
Price is on the higher end of the scale but the friendly staff ensures a positive feeling.
We are a family of 5 so it was always going to be an expensive trip to Oberstdorf. We spent a lot of time researching places to stay. In the beginning we had a lot of correspondence with "Live like a German" who had a wide range of houses and apartments. They were very helpful. If you are travelling on a budget, then they have some good places to rent. If you want luxury, they also have that. I would have been happy with an apartment they had on offer that was very cheap, but my wife really wanted a place with a pool for the kids.
In the end, we decided on Hotel Schellenberg and booked it directly with the hotel. Or should I say, my wife decided on that Hotel. It was very expensive for the five of use, but that is life with a big family.
The closest airport in Munich, but Zurich is also an option. It depends on availability from your location.
We rented a car from Enterprise through Alamo. A station wagon to get all of the gear into the car. One thing YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER when hiring a car, is to check it completely before driving off. When I picked up the car, the guy said that there was no damage on it and it was ready to go. When I inspected it, there were a couple of large scratches and a dent in the car. I took pictures of these and informed their telephone helpline. I had to do this, because finding a way out of that car hire carpark is an exercise in itself.
Anyway the guy said that he would note the damage on the booking.
The drive was pleasant enough with tired kids! The GPS was the saviour and we arrived at the hotel at about 10pm. It is a family owned Hotel with the father mother and daughter working there. I spoke to the daughter who said that her brother was also going to come back and help run the hotel. They are nice people. The husband was an Olympic skier, so his pictures are dotted around the hotel. We did not pre pay when we booked the room and only paid at the end of our stay.
As a foreigner, Germans can seem to be rude, but they are just not as sociable as other people. The owners of the hotel are not very different. They all speak English and answer questions, but like other Germans, it is more of a one way conversation where they usually do not start it.
Our room consisted of one large room and a smaller one for the kids. My wife and I had a double bed with a sofa bed for our four year old and the other two boys slept in the adjoining room. The beds were comfortable and spacious.
The bathroom had a tiled floor and no heating which was a little strange, so it was cold in there.
The balcony overlooked the street, so we did not have the mountain view. With the windows shut, we did not hear the traffic.
Also in the room is a flatscreen TV and there is wireless internet which can be a little slow during the day. At night it was better when other guests were asleep.
Breakfast was included which consists of bread, jams, cereals, juice and scrambled eggs. We filled the kids up before heading out to the ski slopes. Dinner and lunch is not available at the hotel.
There is a warm room to store skis and boots and this is located downstairs on the same floor as the gym and pool. The gym has a treadmill, rowing machine and a pulley machine for weight work.
The pool is about 20 metres long and the water temperature is a little cold at first. Next to that is a hot tub and spa room with a range of different things. That area kept the wife happy.
The hotel has a small carpark out the front with a chain reserved for guests. Parking was not a problem for us. We parked out the front of the hotel a couple of times, which was not allowed. I saw a car there one day that had received a parking ticket. Think it was 10 euro.
One thing I was surprised about, was that we stayed at the hotel for 10 days and they only changed the bed sheets once, when I asked them to. House keeping however, did tidy the room each day.
There is a supermarket right next to the carpark and that is where I bought things to make lunch with. They also sell alcohol and cigarettes (not that we smoke).
PLEASE NOTE that a lot of places do not take cards, so you need to have cash with you. There is an ATM next the the train station.
Ski hire is available on the mountains and in town. We decided to rent ours in town which was handy. Ski hire is relatively cheap as well however they do not do half days, only full days.
The Hotel is located next to the town centre where there are many restaurants and a few bars. We ate at an Italian restaurant called Restaurant Primavera the first night which was perfect. Kids had pizzas and we pasta. It has very friendly staff and well priced food. We ended up eating there about 4 times during our 10 day trip. We tried a couple of other places but the best by far was a restaurant located a few doors down from the Italian called Dampfbierbrauerei. Booking IS A MUST. When we were there, the restaurant was fully booked for two months ahead, so we ate there from 6-7 when it was quiet. Food is amazing - all sorts of meat dishes and cheap prices. They also have live music there.
As for the mountains, there is a ski run every few hundred metres. The first day we went to the top of Nebelhorn which was a huge mistake. All of our kids are good skiers, but to get down from that one, you have to go on black runs. We found out the hard way. After that we tried Sollereckbahn and Fellhornbahn. Fellhorn was the best for us because our kids can do red runs. If you have small kids, go to Sollereckbahn instead. It is pretty much all blue runs with a couple of reds.
We took a drive to Austria and stopped in a small town. The drive is beautiful. You go through mountain ranges and pass even more ski fields - they are literally everywhere.
Conclusion
The trip was fun but expensive. Lift tickets are not cheap but they are worth it.
Try not to go there during the Dutch or German winter holidays because the place is packed. Also, check the weather reports before hand because the two previous years had almost NO SNOW.
The Hotel is great if you need one that is central, has a pool and spa facilities. It is not for the budget traveler.
Prices for clothing, electronics are the same as other European countries, so dont go there for shopping.
The Hotel gets a 4 out of 5 and Oberstdorf itself, also a 4 out of 5. I would go back there again.
