We arranged to stay at Auberge La Douce Montagne, Allemont through Booking.com, but would have got the same rate if I had gone direct. The Auberge La Douce Montagne was an impressive annex to a main hotel back in the 1930s. Now it stands alone and provides clean well portioned rooms at a good price, with extremely friendly and welcoming staff.
Run by Dutch owners, it served our purposes well. Great breakfast (fresh rolls), but a little expensive at €9pp. Then drove up to the slopes (apparently there was a bus). At the end of the day the hotel bar served cold beers and the terrace was bathed in sunshine. On one night we had the three-course set meal; at €17 pp it was pretty good. The next night we wandered down to a local pizza place. Cheap and cheerful.
The room had a double bed and a bunk bed. We paid €60 B&B for 2 pers per night. (€100 for the half board night).
Bottom line is that I’d recommend this place. The staff were welcoming, the rooms very clean and quiet. The hotel is well located to gain easy car access to the slopes (climbing several hundred meters - you’ll need snow chains after a heavy fall).
The hotel had clean comfortable rooms. The staff was really friendly and accomodating. The staff seemed to speak about a million different languages.
They have a group dinner outside that was really pleasant. The hotel had a bar with a comfy seating area but we took our drinks out on the front lawn as did many of the other guests.
Just a really pleasant place to stay-- If you go, walk up the road about 200 meters past the hotel and you'll see the most amazing waterfall on the left!
La Douce Montagne is the best hotel to stay if you are looking for a place to start from for your bike, run or swim trainings in the French Alpes.
Located between the major cols of the French Alpes (Du Glandon, Croix the Fer, Alpe d'Huez, Galibier etc,) it is the ideal starting point for bike trips. The hotel is fully focused on sport and has all facilities to store bicycles safely and maintain them. To recover after a trip is a nice small swiming pool available. For lunch one can choose for the unlimited pasta buffet.
The team of Douce Montagne is great and makes your stay pleasant and comfortable.
Looking forward to returning again.
On first arrival the room was nice, modern, however it was a twin room.
We asked if there were any double rooms available, and were told no, they only had one double room. We asked for a double duvet and it was brought up to the room.
The room had a wardrobe and a nice size bathroom but there were no shutters for the windows. This meant it was light outside very early. The wifi didn't work at all in the room and it only worked occasionally in the dining area. We asked if there was an issue with the wifi but they said it is because we are in the mountains... in the end we went to the Maison de Tourisme nearby which has free, working wifi all the time.
We could hear every outdoor noise from the hallway and the room next door. We could even hear the person next door snoring the whole night. It was also quite disturbing when people were talking in the corridor.
We had the meal here one night but there were only two choices for starter, main course and dessert. The entrecote steak was chewy and overdone and only about half of it was edible. There was also a strange white sauce accompanying the steak. We also had the filet mignon skewer which was nothing special. We found the food very overpriced for the quality.
On the morning we left, we had a cup of tea. I specifically asked if they had green tea. The person said yes, and poured two cups of tea. She then showed me the collection, which consisted of green tea and mango, green tea and lemon. She also offered me verveine which isn't green tea. In the end I used my own tea but they still charged us full price and they didn't apologise.
I would not recommend this hotel at all.
They offer good food and lots of it, friendly service and safe storgae of your priceless bikes.
I loved every minute of my two stays there
