Detailed Reviews
Much better than we expected from some reviews. It’s ‘basic’ in the sense that you don’t get a fridge or a safe or a suitcase stand. But everything was clean and functioning and relatively new. (It’s not basic in the sense of a shabby cramped old chalet.) Room size was OK for the 2 of us (would be very cramped if you needed to use the hidden third bed). Bathroom had good shower etc. Separate WC a good feature. Heating is adjustable if you look carefully in the bottom corner by the window. Staff are friendly. Wifi works, sort of. Food very French, good bread, self-cooked eggs, lots of cheese (fine by me). Room-numbered ski lockers in basement with key. Put boots on there, hobble across the road and you’re on the piste, the ‘green’ piste that leads quickly to the main lift complex. Much more convenient than the many chalets at the other end of town which claim to be near some kind of piste.
A row of south-facing rooms on the first floor are allocated to people who book through Crystal as we did. These rooms have a good view but not quite the best/highest view.
Crystal are nominally your holiday operator but in practice are just an agency for the TUI flights, the coach transfer and this good value hotel. There’s no Crystal rep on the coach. You’re not given the resort rep’s phone number. If you have a query in resort, you have to ring a UK number. After many options and recorded messages you get through to a call centre in Spain, who obviously know nothing about Alpe d’Huez, they have to ring the rep and get back to you.
The TV channels are all in French and the hotel make this perfectly clear in their leaflet for customers. It’s only Crystal who claim otherwise, despite previous reviewers pointing out it’s not true. I rang Crystal the week before and was assured that TVs in Le Chaix have English channels. But their salesperson was simply reading from the incorrect information on Crystal’s website.

We stayed at Le Chaix on 4th Jan for a week.Newly renovated rooms including bathroom. Bigger than average with balcony.Plenty of storage/wardrobe space.Beds firm but comfy.Nice fresh white linen.Room tidied daily. We booked through Crystal and their details state that rooms have a safe. They don't. TV in room but no English channels.Good strong wifi in room. Great location.Basically, walk across the road and onto a green to take us down to the chair lifts.Friendly, helpful staff.
The restaurant is on the top floor so lovely views over the slopes at mealtimes. We found plenty to fill us up at meal times. Breakfast buffet had lovely fresh breads, croissants, pastries, cereals, juices, coffee, tea. Boil your own eggs in the equipment provided.Equipment to make your own pancakes too. Though no fried eggs, sausage or bacon for we Brits. Dinner was a three course set meal. Well cooked. Well presented. Varied , fresh and hot. On one occasion, the main course was veal. One guest refused it so the kitchen quickly produced an alternative while the rest of us quietly enjoyed the tasty, tender meat.
The only problem we had was with Chambery airport. It's seriously prone to bad weather conditions. Ours was the only flight to arrive (5 hours late) on that day. It's also a shambles. Completely ill-equipped for the amount of people during the ski season.

Excellent budget ski hotel positioned next to the slopes (just over the road from the hotel). Very friendly and welcoming staff. Clean and comfortable room, bathroom and with large balcony overlooking ski slopes and town. Very nice breakfast with selection of hot and cold choices. Traditional French evening meal - very well cooked and presented by attentive staff in panoramic dining room overlooking ski slopes. Would highly recommend this hotel.

Be very careful when booking this hotel. I made a booking for a triple room over the weekend of the Marmotte Sportive which was subsequently postponed.
The hotel decided to close, but despite them not opening to provide a service I've paid for, they have refused to refund my booking and will not respond to further communication.
I have had to open a dispute with my credit card provider.

Having stayed at the hotel in 2022 and enjoyed our visit with Crystal to the hotel which has an ideal location this year it was a disappointment.
The rooms were clean and reasonably spacious. Breakfast was buffet style and a good selection, however, the main meal lacked any choice and portions were far too small and sometimes strange. On our final evening the meal was so bad we were forced to complain to the manager who was totally ineffective. There was a lack of tables on the last evening forcing 3 couples to wait 2 hours for a table. In the past we met in the bar for a pre dinner drink at 6.30 and after our meal. This year the bar did not open until 7pm when dinner was served and shut at 9pm. There was a small lounge area in the restaurant but at 9pm the staff were keen to move you out to lock up. The girls waiting in the restaurant worked very hard but there is a clear lack of staff and leadership.
A shame because we love the location and would have considered returning but are now looking for an alternative.

My husband and I had a wonderful 2 week stay at Le Chaix.
The rooms were clean, comfortable and had ample storage. Lovely views, warm and most importantly the hotel was so close to the ski run. We just had to walk across the road and a little car park to the slope and ski down a gently run to the main lifts at Les Bergers.
The breakfast was a nice continental buffet on the top floor where you could sit where you wanted to and have wonderful view of the mountains.
Dinner was in the same place and the three course set menu was great. It was nice, not to have to make a decision on what to eat after a tiring day on the mountain. Like going to my Mums for dinner.
The bar/relaxing area next to the dining room was nice but not open much outside dinning times. Not that we needed it, relaxing in our room was perfect when we had an early finish on the slopes.
The ski lockers downstairs, with direct access onto the road was great and having a toilet down there was very useful.
There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the room and if you want a hairdryer you need to borrow one from reception, but don’t forget, this is a 2 star hotel. And therefore, for the price, it was excellent value.
The hotel is so central to shops, bars and the pool which we used a lot.
And finally, the staff were awesome. Friendly, attentive and fun. Their English was perfect and they were very sweet at tolerating our attempts at French! Thanks guys xx
We will certainly be returning here. 👍

We stayed at Le Chaix as a family of six for a week. We booked through Crystal Ski. The hotel reception left a bit to be desired, but you dont spend much time there. We were too early to check in, so we left our bags in the luggage room and went to collect our skies and have a look around. Three twin rooms for the six of us, all of which were on the third floor with huge balconies overlooking the slopes. The rooms appear to have recently been refurbished with plenty of storage and a separate shower room and toilet. Very comfortable. Dinner varied each night, and sometimes there was a children's option. The food was OK, always plentiful. Sadly no free drinks, only water. Breakfast was a buffet - the pancake station being a huge hit! The staff at the hotel were fabulous - Benji and the lady with the curly black hair (sorry we didn't get your name)! made our holiday really special. The hotel is located right on the slopes - you literally walk across the road to the nursery slope. Perfect location. The location was really quiet. We all agreed that we'd return 👍

Stayed here through a Crystal ski package as a group of 12.
Very poor:
The evening meal food was atrocious on the whole, stone cold or lukewarm. Not big portion sizes. Food not cooked on the premises but they even made a poor job of heating it up! Apparently the chef just didn’t care (that from one of his colleagues!)
The bar and lounge was only open from 7-9 while restaurant in use although after complaining a lot they extended it to 10pm. As a group we wanted somewhere to sit for our apres or to catch after dinner. There was nowhere to even buy a cuppa in the hotel. One night they locked the lounge/bar door so I couldn’t get in after I’d popped out.
We arrived at 9.15pm on the first night, not delayed so Hôtel expecting us. Reception closed and rep struggled to find our room keys. Hôtel didn’t save any food for us and so the rep thrust a pizza menu in our hands and said they would reimburse us and left. Flipping nightmare to try and call through so ended up walking there at 10pm!
Positives:
Great location for slopes.
Large twin room with plenty of storage, good bathroom and a balcony with great views.
Breakfast was on the whole ok although often things not filled up.
The young staff were pleasant.
The reps gave us a good will payment for the debacle with the pizza/access and also a meal out at a restaurant (waiting on reimbursement) They also had some influence with the bar remaining open a little later but I doubt this will achieve a lasting change otherwise we wouldn’t have had these problems so far into the season.

Currently staying at the hotel. Location is good. It’s clean and functional. The beds are comfortable and shower is good. The staff are friendly but useless!
Breakfast is a sham! The first morning we went for breakfast an hour before breakfast service finished and there was nothing left! No pastries, no pancakes, no yogurts, no meat or cheese, no coffee and no milk! They also had nothing left to replenish it all with. There was bread and cereal (but no milk) and eggs. Every table was dirty also. The following mornings we came down even earlier and there was plenty of food but the staff lack attention. The boiled egg machine never has enough water in it so I have to ask for it to be refilled. They don’t notice when anything runs out like plates etc so again I have to ask. They let the coffee machine run empty rather than keeping it topped up and my fiancé swears he pressed latte and it definitely gave him a mocha!
The lift is always wet because people wear their ski boots in it which you’re not supposed to do. Meaning the rest of us have to get wet socks when going back to our room. The ski lockers are clearly numbered and someone had taken ours meaning we were forced to take someone else’s. It’s not the staff fault but they should enforce the rules.
The room gets “cleaned” each day apparently. They don’t make the bed for you. They give you more toilet roll when needed but left it up to us to actually replace it on the holder. They re fold the shower mat towel but other than that I don’t see what they do!?!? They haven’t given us any new shower gel miniatures as yet either which I suppose I’m going to have to ask for yet again!

Very disappointed that they couldn’t cater for vegetarians. My daughter is a vegetarian and all they offered was an omelette or a plate of fried potatoes. We weren’t offered pasta, rice, nothing. I read a review that said the chef made some vegan dishes so I thought it would be ok but no apparently. Incredible to think they could do vegan dishes but not vegetarian. It ruined our holiday.
