The staff didn't speak or understand any English whatsoever which was frustrating at times.
I was given a ground floor room which was situated out in the reception area which was open 24 hours.
I didn't get any sleep at all thanks to the loud voices and noise of the television coming from the reception also sounds of the coins falling into the drinks vending machine then the loud thud of a can dropping into the compartment which was right next to my room door!
My bed felt like it was literally out in the reception area with the constant loud voices of French guests or was it the staff?!
These persons clearly had no respect for any guests trying to sleep in the nearby rooms.
If I could have spoke any French I would have opened my door and told the receptionist to move me to another room if they must have loud discussions right outside my door!
The reception was still loud and active at 5am, I was that exhausted that if this hotel was in England I would have checked out there and then.
Other than these rude persons the hotel was clean, secure and tidy. My window view was a large palm tree and outside air conditioning machine that clicked on and off although the air conditioning in my room 'did not work'. The breakfast was a extra charge on top of the expensive cost of the room so I didn't bother as I realise I could have booked a chalet for a family of four on another nearby complex for just €63 a night which was cheaper than the opal hotel!
The management photos show a roof terrace which I wasn't aware of as I didn't see it..
The shower room was clean and towels and shower gel was provided.
There was a safe in the room but I wasn't sure how to use this so I couldn't lock my money away either.
If the hotel want to make improvements I'd suggest sound proofing the ground floor rooms or close the reception at night so nearby guests can sleep- or charge less euros per room as I slept all day the following morning which took a day off my holiday.
The room was €198, parking €18 and €12 per adult for breakfast, my daughter ate free.
We paid at reception upon arrival a total of €240 plus taxe de séjour. We were greeted by a friendly man on reception.
We were allocated a front facing room on the 2nd floor, just above reception which is on a busy road opposite a building site.
The room was clean enough but extremely dated and very very small for 3 people. We found the only way to make it work was for one person to move around at a time. The beds were hard and uncomfortable but the tiny bathroom was well equipped with hairdryer and magnifying mirror. Although I did have to bend down to have a shower as the bar holding the shower head came to shoulder height at best (I am 6ft ). Air conditioning was fine, WiFi didn’t work. No balcony no blinds, it was either dark room or open curtains for everyone to see in.
The most significant down side of this hotel is the noise, zero soundproofing you can hear reception the cars driving past, the neighbours, well everything really. A formula one hotel is much better in terms of sound proofing.
Although no a buffet given the current conditions breakfast was fine but over priced, we paid €8 in a different hotel in Cap dAgde for a better breakfast the week before.
We checked out at 10:30am, we requested to leave our car in the car park for an extra hour, considering we paid €18 for the space this was not an unreasonable request but the manager made a really big deal of letting us do this.
So to sum up, the Opal hotel is fine for a short stay but is worth no more than €60 per night maybe €100 high season and that is only because of the location. It needs a major overhaul to justify the star rating and the exorbitant prices.
Thanks to the new owners for their kindness and efficiency! Breakfast is very varied with some homemade products.
We will definitely return during our next stay in Cape Town!
The first look of the room looked old, but okay, then things started to go wrong.
WiFi: the WiFi didn’t work. After calling the reception twice, telling them we need internet for our job, they told us they’d look for a solution and call us back. They never did.
Curtains: at about an hour after we closed the curtains, the beam carrying the curtains just fell down. Luckily nobody stood under it.
The bed: the bed is old. It makes a lot of noise when you move and there’s a bump in the middle.
The toilet: when you flush the toilet, the refilling makes more noise than a passing train.
When we told the receptionist the morning after about our concerns, everything was our fault. We didn’t mind that the room was a very standard room, but the price was just too high for an outdated room like that.
“What do you expect, you are in Cap D’Agde”. “We just had to look for another hotel”, they said. This is NOT the way you treat paying customers.
We didn’t even got an apology. They just didn’t believe us.
Costumer service: 0/10
